geometric distance (radius1+radius2) should be preferred, definitely. InitialEquilibrium distance is only creating strange effects (i.e. loose and re-create the same contact and you get different initial value, meaning you gain or loose volume or mass). For continuum-discrete approaches, I understand some need that, but for real granular materials it makes non sense.
