What you say should be preferred for granular materials, that is right
and was never contested. Obviously, for continuum discretization the
inverse is preferrable and Yade should make both of them possible. (I
know you don't like continuum mechanics, but please keep this emotion (I
don't see any explanation for that) away from this discussion, it is as
legitimate as anything else.)

Bug description:
Seems that there is too much friction with the walls, but inspecting the XML 
file gives nothing suspicious. UnbalancedForce sits constantly at 1.1407 after 
a small while, without going down.
