What you say should be preferred for granular materials, that is right and was never contested. Obviously, for continuum discretization the inverse is preferrable and Yade should make both of them possible. (I know you don't like continuum mechanics, but please keep this emotion (I don't see any explanation for that) away from this discussion, it is as legitimate as anything else.)
