Comrades,
Comrades Mduduzi, Funky and Mbeki please save us some time to discuss matters
that might assist us campaigning for the 2009 elections.
The issue you are trying so hard to defend does not even arise as a debate for
the following (obvious) reason.
If the ANC would have wanted Cde Thabo Mbeki to play a specific (special) role
in our election campaign, surely the ANC would have consulted Thabo and explain
exactly what it is that it wants him to do,But that is not the case here at all.
The ANC Leadership upon being asked by journalists and others (the question
found its space somehow through to the public domain) responds and say we would
expect from Cde Thabo Mbeki what we expect from any desciplined cadre of our
Movement as long as he is the member of the ANC and as long as nothing has
been recieved from him to the contrary.
Comrade Gwede Mantashe in his attempt to clarify the issue he even goes further
and say, "we do not expect Cde Mbeki and Mandela as former Presidents to play a
prominent role, however we expect them as members of the ANC to canvass for the
ANC vote quitely to every body they meet with"
Now comrades you must tell us if that was an unreasonable expectation coming
from our leaders which was based from our practice and tradition in the ANC or
any organisation that takes itself serious.
I reapeat this point Maqabane, If there was any prominent role the ANC has
identified to be played by Cde Thabo we would have through our leadership made
him aware and deploy him as such, there is no point about deployement here, the
point is what does the ANC expect its members to do.
We understand Cde Thabo is bitter(see his letter to JZ) about his recall from
the Presidency (for a disciplined cadre he claimed to be) and therefore we
would not expect him to play any prominent role.
Thabo wanted to express his discontent about his recall and he had extrapolated
the issues raised by both the ANC and ANCYL presidents to use as a pretext for
his issues he wanted to discuss in public with the ANC President when he asked
for a public debate.
Please comrades our duty to defend each other must not deliver us to some
pigeon holed thinking that becomes so impervious to infuence of reason and
context within which issues are debated.
We are further not confused about the priveleged status our former leadership
might enjoy wrt how they might relate with our leadership and structures, hence
our constittuion talks about an EX OFFICIO status.
I shall wait to be convinced otherwise comrades
