Thanx Cde Skizo and Cde Aphiwe, All the issues as raised relate to the apartheid creation of different identities. Ours was a capitalist class apartheid. It introduced a system that is characterised by ownership thus issues of regionalism and tribalism is based on ownership of language, unfair regional patriotism, ethnical preferences and the belief in atmospheric pressures in which we find ourselves.
A capitalist system creates an environment that is not separable from the negatives that come with the character of capitalism which includes greed, poverty, crime, diseases, etc. It is a society that is characterised by divisions, disunity, self-centeredness and a highest degree of corruption informed by greed. It is a society that is governed through business orientation and the basic principle is economic viability or maximisation of profit. Capitalism promotes casualization of labour, closes access to education, encourages poor-quality services through the pretence of lack of funding, promotes retrenchments on the basis of maximising profit or benchmarking with other organisations, a cut in salaries, increase in prices of goods and services, increase in interest rates, fuel and other essential sources of life etc. All these observations degrade the standard of living in society. The question is why I make this statements and the answer is very simple “in order to understand the society we live in". The discussion is not based on the capitalist system we inherited but on its legacy. In Mpumalanga, the same issue came unto being. The general masses of the province do not understand that we are not a federal state. They want a representation in cabinet (remember that since 1994 to date Mpumalanga never had anyone in cabinet). This is an issue that cannot be undermined because as Skizo said "it will be used by the opposition to reduce our (anc) voters. I think that all cadres have a responsibility to educate our masses regarding cabinet as enshined in section 91 of the constitution. It will however require our leaders to also spread cabinet posts to all walks of the country within the ambit of traceable cadreship credentials and capacity. Based on a rationale that this is what the people of the place (former Venda) are genuinely asking as he said. I have no reason to believe otherwise. The issue of regionalism and tribalism in the post-apartheid South Africa is deep-rooted issue, so it can not be just dismissed as looking back-wards. In actual sense ordinary people of the republic still fundamentally relate to their regions and tribes. I, like others believe that our current demarcation at (municipalities and provinces levels) do perpetrate differences between regions and tribes. In essence this is one of the aspects of post-apartheid era we should deal with honestly than dismissing. For example in Western Cape regionalism and tribalism is even within the provincial ANC leadership. To be honest, it’s actually one of the attributors, that led to us (ANC) losing the province. One can also cite the issue of xenophobia in South Africa (why did our black brothers fight and kill each other) and did nothing to white people. The answer to that has both class and race aspect. We all know that we should move beyond such acts but it happened, which means it exists. Hence, we need proper and guided views to be channeled in all spheres of society (churches, political gatherings, mass media etc).
