Ban soapies: YCL CEDRIC MBOYISA, The Citizen, 12 June 2009 From: http://www.citizen.co.za/index/article.aspx?pDesc=98080,1,22 JOHANNESBURG - If Young Communist League (YCL) spokesman Castro Ngobese has his way, soapies will be banned from South African television screens - just when President Jacob Zuma's daughter, Gugulethu, has landed a role in the SABC soap Isidingo. "To begin with, soapies suck," Ngobese said yesterday. "Without being populist or aspiring to be a populist, soapies must go," he said. He argued that soapies, which are very popular throughout the country, are used by the rich to advance a capitalist agenda. "Marxism teaches us that soapies are programmes created for the elite for their own enjoyment and amusement. "Their main core function is that of reinforcing in the entertainment sphere a capitalist logic and morals which are necessary for the reproduction of a dog-eat-dog society," he added. The Beeld newspaper yesterday reported that Gugulethu Zuma will soon star in Isidingo. Zuma, 24, is the daughter of the President and his former wife, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. She secured a role in the drama after three auditions and is scheduled to hit the nation's TV screens on July 1 as Lesedi Moloi, a character who returns to South Africa after having lived abroad for five years. Zuma told Beeld that she was not really interested in politics. The daily flighting of soapie dramas such as Scandal,Generations and Rhythm City was meant to "defocus" the working class and the poor youth from the primary struggle - the class struggle, he said. "The reality is that most of our people cannot relate to this soapie circus; only a selected filthy rich (sic) can be co-opted to this opulent lifestyle as depicted in soapies," he said. Asked by The Citizen whether he watched soapies, Ngobese said he did, but only in order to be able defend his anti-soapie stance. He called on the youth to disapprove of soapies by drawing on the "radicalism and militancy unleashed by the generation of 1976". Who the hell is Ngobese? to tell people that the soapies staffs are used by the rich to advance capitalism, that is ridiculous. How many brothers of ours who are getting paid through those programmes? Youth should wake up now is the time, anything that does not give either the ANCYL OR YCL a direct benefit it will ba called names. Is it because in one political debate organized by the Mpho Tsedu a son to the chief editor of citypress Mathata Tsedu against Hlomla before the elections their tsedu was taken from the work go through debate, is this the reason why soapies should be banned? Come Ngobese why understanding that people are from different schools of thought, it indicate clearly that you are from a school of doomed more especially on Maxism. Simon 6/12/2009 9:02:05 AM Well seems like the YCL should be rather termed the Young Confused League, because despite all their masquarades and misplaced understanding of communism, it has not worked anywhere in the world and history can show that. Countries like china after years of failure moved to capitalism and now are the Global giant, Russia as well amongst others, so Castro get your facts right and contribute progressively to this Country. Although my reasons are very different from this militant nonsense. My life is already a soapie! I don't need TV to show me greed, hatred, fighting and bad relationships. Rather give me something that expands the mind. National Geo. Discovery. I don't get this soapie mania. During the elections people even voted based on soapie star affiliations! How sad is that? They are people like everybody else. They even go to the loo just like me and you!
