27 April 2014 COSATU NW condemns the attack on SATAWU truck The Congress of South African Trade Union learned that the SATAWU ANC election truck and its members were attacked yesterday, 25th April 2014, during door-to-door election campaigning at the mining area called Freedom Park. We strongly condemn the attack on our affiliate and our members who were attacked by group of people while performing the work of the federation to make sure that ANC wins the election in 2014 and mobilizing workers to attend its workers day rally on 1st May 2014 at the Olympia stadium. We are told that the group of people surrounded the election truck which included the leadership of SATAWU led by the general secretary, and started throwing stones at them and damaged the election truck, the public safety car and other cars that belong to members, and buses carrying SATAWU shop stewards. On 24th April 2014 COSATU, with the support of the alliance, led a march against the police station at Phokeng, complaining about the safety of our members in the mining industry, and demanded that we want to do election work freely in all areas in the NW. It is wrong for the SAPS in the NW to allow people to declare the mining areas as their no-go area; it cannot be so in our country. We call on the police to take steps to find out what. Our poor people are killed, attacked and assaulted right in front of the police and they say nothing. Certain individuals are celebrating the attack against COSATU leaders, while they are supposed to protect our lives. We call on the president of the RSA to take the killing of workers seriously and declare the mining industry as of the state of emergency until all our poor people are safe, our communities in the mining area including the leaders of our trade union and that of the federation are not safe. Our SAPS management of the NW must account for all what has happened to the SATAWU members during the attack. We wish those who were injured a speedy recovery and that COSATU NW will be taking its remaining five days of the election campaign right in the mining area as we call for the police to protect us on those days.
