Nope, it's not obvious to everyone else - because you've stumbled upon a new feature that we've quietly released onto the site. In short, del.icio.us now has preliminary support for Keyword Shortcuts. If you want to disable the search form for a bookmark, remove all tags from the bookmark that begin with the shortcut: prefix. We've not yet had a chance to really give it a proper treatment in the help pages, and there will probably be a few wrinkles to iron out. It's already pretty useful for me personally, but suggestions and feedback are definitely welcome! For now, here's the scoop: The import feature now partly understands bookmarked Keyword Searches exported by Firefox. You can read more about Keyword Searches here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_keyword_searches Any Keyword Searches you import into del.icio.us will be given tags of the form shortcut:{keyword}, where {keyword} is replaced by your keyword. So, if you had a Keyword Search with a keyword of "yahoo", you'd see shortcut:yahoo. In your case, you had a bookmark with keyword of "img" - thus, shortcut:img You can also create new Keyword Searches on del.icio.us by adding your own shortcut: tags manually. When a Keyword Shortcut bookmark contains a "%s" somewhere in the URL, the "%s" acts as a placeholder for further input. Thus, you can bookmark the URL used by a web search, but wait to fill in the search terms. For example: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%s For each bookmark in your collection with shortcut: prefix tags, del.icio.us automatically builds and inserts a search form for that bookmark. You can enter search terms here and either press return or click the "go" button. What you've typed will replace the "%s" placeholder in the bookmark URL, and you'll be redirected to the resulting URL. You can see a listing of all of your Keyword Shortcuts by viewing the system:shortcuts tag for your account. For example, here are my shared Keyword Shortcuts: http://del.icio.us/deusx/system:shortcuts Notice that the search form doesn't appear for any of those bookmarks from my collection. That's because the search form feature only works for your *own* bookmarks. If you save any of those shortcuts of mine to your own account, you'll see the search forms appear. Try replacing the "deusx" above with your own username, for a list of your own shortcuts. Also, check here for a list of shortcuts across all users: http://del.icio.us/tag/system:shortcuts There's one last trick to the new Keyword Shortcuts support, and that's in the del.icio.us search form. Your Keyword Shortcuts can be invoked in that form by entering an exclamation point (!), the keyword, and the search terms. So, for example, if you had a bookmark tagged with shortcut:yahoo, you could enter the following into the del.icio.us search form: !yahoo social bookmarking tricks This will cause del.icio.us to look for a bookmark in your collection tagged with shortcut:yahoo, find a "%s" place holder in the URL, replace it with "social bookmarking tricks", and then redirect you to that completed search URL. For example: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=social+bookmarking+tricks Note that if no "%s" is found in the bookmarked URL, there's no problem. You can have simple named shortcuts that simply redirect to a URL with no changes. One nice side-effect of this search feature is that it can be taken advantage of in the Firefox extension - all Keyword Shortcut searches should work in the del.icio.us search box option provided by the extension. Whew, and that's about it. This feature is a work-in-progress, and we've got some further exciting plans surrounding it that will be revealed soon. So, stay tuned. In the meantime, what do you think? What would make this feature more useful? For example, I've got the search forms automatically visible so that you can quickly click on them and enter text for a search. However, would it be less confusing if the forms were hidden until you clicked on the bookmark? Better in a popup? Any other ideas? Thanks! Yahoo!
