Thanks a lot for your testing feedback, James ( I hope to have guessed your 
name this time!! :D )

In keeping with your the second issue you pointed out, I think the solution 
for this might be to add some sort of delay (like 15 minutes or so) to the 
smart-update task. I think Yoper currently rush too much by doing this just 
when you log in KDM for two reasons:

a) What James pointed out. The read-only lock is something quite a big bunch 
of users are noticing (and complaining about) lately.
b) When you log in, you often open one or more applications and the fact 
that smart-update is also lauched makes everythig to run sensibly slower for 
some time. You could lauch smart-update a few minutes later and avoiding 
this bottleneck.

I hope we get this minor issues sorted out soon.
