There's a bunch of things that led to our decision to bring Outlook to the platform. There was no single thing that led us to say, "hey, it's Outlook time!", but rather a large number of things that played into the decision. On the technical side, there were two major changes that we knew were coming after we shipped Entourage 2008. We completely ripped out the back-end for how we communicate with Exchange (we did away with WebDAV) and replaced it with the latest and greatest way to communicate with Exchange (we changed to Exchange Web Services). On the front end, we've moved to a Cocoa UI, which means that we've touched every pixel on the screen. With both a massive change to a huge chunk of our backend code and a complete facelift for our UI, it meant that we were already essentially developing a new application. If we're going to develop a new application, doesn't it behoove us to consider what its name should be? I've got it on my (extensive, never-ending, always growing) to-do list to write up a longer blog post about the change from Entourage to Outlook. So you can consider this a preview of that as-yet-unwritten post. :) >(I base that solely on the fact that MacBU has nearly >doubled it's staff lately) This isn't quite accurate, although you're free to tell my manager that I do enough awesome work that it just looks like there are three of me. ;) When I started here five years ago, we had ~180 full-time employees. I don't know exactly what the current number is, but we've got ~210 full-time employees right now. We've definitely grown, but we haven't doubled.
