(This is just my opinion - I have no insight into the MS strategy!) I think the rationale is that, for the average home user, mail.app is 'good enough', and from Microsoft's point of view it is hard to compete with 'free'!
Outlook 2011 is designed for, and targeted at, the enterprise user, connecting to an Exchange account. It will do IMAP and POP as well, but it has been designed from the ground up to suit the needs of a large organization. This is an area where it is worth their time and effort to develop a mail client (which is not an easy task, whatever people may think). You may think that, having developed it, they could include it in the H&S edition at zero extra cost, but the fact it is included in that edition would cannibalise the sales of the 'business' editions, which command a premium prices. The balance is how many sales they will loose all together (because there is _no_ mail client in the cheaper versions) versus the number of copies of Business Editions they will sell instead of the H&S because people want the exchange account integration. I assume they have done their homework and figured out that leaving Outlook 2011 out of the H&S edition will give the best return on investm ent. -- Barry Wainwright On 11 Sep 2010, at 01:26, Richard Cawdell <[email protected]> wrote: > No email client at all? > What on earth is the rationale for that? > > Richard > > > > From: Diane Ross <[email protected]> > Reply-To: YouTalk mailing list for discussion of Microsoft Entourage & > Outlook <[email protected]> > Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2010 17:14:57 -0700 > To: YouTalk mailing list for discussion of Microsoft Entourage > <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: Changed from PC & Outlook to Mac & Entourage - NEED HELP! > > On 9/10/10 4:16 PM, "Hendrik Velthuis" <[email protected]> wrote: > >> Does anyone know: >> 1) when Outlook for Mac will be available? > > October > >> 2) will it be part of the free office 2011 for mac upgrades that are >> included now in the purchase of the office for mac 2008? > > Yes, with a qualifying product.
