The short version is the Unknown Error is fixed, my user Database is
now okay and the Entourage Database Utility says it good.

I am not sure what really caused the unknown error but it was pretty
obvious there was something wrong with my user Database. The clue to
what was wrong came after the the Database Utility ³hung² at the end of
the 5th pass and it created a new file called Database (Rebuild) and left
the Database unchanged but still active.

The good database was the Rebuild version; however, it was not active
or being used by Entourage. I could tell by noting the time changes.
Exchanging or swapping databases in Entourage is not easy!

I first dragged the Database to the desktop and changed the filename to
xxxDatabase. I then used the Finder to change the Database (Rebuild) to
just Database. Good plan but it did not (repeat did not) work. Entourage
was still using the xxxDatabase on the desktop. I tried to trash the
xxxDatabase and the Finder hung and would not let me delete a file that
was in use. I restarted from a SuperDuper backup drive and finally
managed to flush the trash.

After a restart from the iMac¹s Macintosh HD, Entourage worked perfect.
There was no ³Unknown Error² when I clicked on the Address book icon.
As a belt and suspenders action I ran the Database Utility again and the
Verification pass worked with no errors so I let it Rebuild and this time
the 5th pass worked (and after a few nervous seconds and the spinning
beach ball at the end), I got the ³Your database was successfully rebuilt²
and even had an active ³Done² button at the bottom. I opened the
Identities folder and there was only one Database file.

I have no idea why the Database Utility hung on me earlier requiring
the use of the OS X Force Quit to clear the ³Not Responding² annotation
on the Entourage Database Utility. When the utility hung it created
a good Rebuild database but failed to make it active. BTW, I had over
300 GB of unused hard drive space so the utility was not starved for elbow
room to do its thing.

Excuse this long posting but I hope my close encounter of the wrong
kind with the Database Utility may be beneficial to some other Entourage
user.

I have two databases in my identity folder called Database dated today
and a Database (Rebuild) dated two days ago when things were good.

How can I get Entourage to start using the Database (Rebuild)?

Should I remove the Database and rename the Database (Rebuild) to
Database?

I have no idea which of the two database file Entourage uses?

Any suggestion on how to clear this error when I tried to
open my Address Book in Entourage 12.2.6?
The error says:

-------
Entourage cannot open the item due to an
error.

An unknown error has occurred in Entourage
-------

It happened shortly after I added an event to my calendar to pick
someone up at the airport. Trashing the event did not help.

Has any of the other Entourage users seen this error?

It happened to me last weekend and when I rebuilt the Database it
hung at the end of the 5th pass. I restarted and it did not clear the error
so I restored the Database using the Time Machine from what I thought
was a good Database from a few days earlier.

I just did a Verify and the Database Utility says there is a problem
and I should rebuild. It is hard to rebuild when the utility hangs at
the end of the pass #5 of 5 and cannot seem to complete its task.

The only problem is when I click on the Address book icon. All other
functions are working perfect.

I just changed to my wife¹s Entourage identity on this computer and
do not get the unknown error when I click on the Address book icon?
