I read somewhere yesterday that one difference between Entourage 2008 and
Mac Outlook 2011 is the default setting for sending mail (requiring SSL
connection to the sendmail server in the latter, not so in the former).

Just what does one get with an "SSL connection" to the sendmail server? My
POP account to my ISP's sendmail server has "SMTP service requires secure
connection (SSL)" unchecked in the "Edit Account" dialog, but of course I do
use authentication with username and password.

What is transmitted more securely using SSL if I check the box? Is that
something my ISP either does or doesn't support? (I'm assuming, based on
what I read yesterday, that it's an end-user choice, given that Outlook
"turns it on" by default). Does turning it on affect who can receive my
mails, or only the traffic between me and my sendmail server? Does doing so
provide me any protection while reading/sending email sipping a Mocha at
Starbucks? (Actually, here in Northern CA I much prefer Peet's).

Thanks so much,

Jim Robertson
