The following was a conversation from Kapleau Roshi.

Questioner: 'can I practice Zen and be a good Catholic?'

Roshi: 'If you practice Zen, you can, but if you practice Zen Buddhism, you
can't.'

Questioner: 'why not?'

Roshi: To practice Zen Buddhism means to transcend yourself. To transcend
yourself means to forget yourself. When that happens, you are neither a good
Catholic nor a good Zen Buddhist.'

Can anybody shed light on the koan?
