I won't say.
My point about hearing about them at the end of sesshin in this way is that it
is just so welcome, and so unexpected (except after the first 45 or 50 sesshin
attended), that it arouses laughter, in what has for seven solid days been
(usually) a pretty solemn and silent atmosphere. Wonderful.
If they're not sentient, they *are*, when we snicker and smile about them, in
deepest and lightest lively appreciation. ;-)
Share with us how you appreciate them to be sentient. Surely they "trope"
toward the sun, and clearly have a Life, and die. And then their husks "live
on". I've sometimes been as impressed with the life of a pile of dry sticks as
I have been with a hale and green-leaf standing Maple.
