When I do standing meditation, for 20-25 minutes, I use eyes open. But lowered
a bit as in normal zazen. I hold the hands in Shashu, which is the hand
position we use for kinhin, walking meditation. All the body is relaxed. It's
a bit like starting-position in t'ai chi chuan. Very, very relaxed. More and
more relaxed with every breath. For 20 minutes. It's a great practice!
When we sit (in Zen), eyes are also open.
That is important.
Usually we face a wall when we sit. So there's not a big visual cacophony.

But follow what your teacher teaches.
