I'll answer to the best of my ability.

1. Zenoss needs SNMP for auto discovery. During manual adds, you could also use Ping monitoring, though that only gets you up/down + whatever zenpacks or extensions you setup or program yourself. The HTTPMonitor Zenpack is a good example of using Ping Monitoring + a Zenpack for some additional monitors. Another could be using Ping + PerfMon Zenpack for Windows.

2. I don't believe Zenoss does this. Alternative OSS is available for this, I happen to use OCSNG, but you could also use other software.

3. Use SubClasses to set the groups of admin users, or use Domain accounts.

4. No - Zenoss is currently clientless save for SNMP. On Windows, you'll either want to use SNMP-Informant to extend the default SNMP data, or use PerfMon or WMI Native Poll zenpack.

5. You can search the forum, there was a recent thread on using a text based list to add devices.

7. Yes and No. There is the Admin Guide which is great for setting up Zenoss and for the devices it supports OOTB. Other devices will require either a Zenpack, for which documentation varies, or manual setup of SNMP polling etc, for which there isn't really much documentation. Well, there is docs in the Admin pack for setting up in Zenoss, but none on SNMP itself and all devices have their own OIDs etc for exposing data. You can also use Nagios plugins, which might do some of the work for you, but then you still have to create the command data sources in Zenoss + graphs etc. This is documented, but not exactly easy IME.

8. Understand that Zenoss, nor these forums, really provide generic Linux docs/support or generic SNMP docs/support. Figure out where the question is, and post in the right place. You may or may not get much help in figuring out which OID to poll for instance.

A few quick questions if someone has a couple minutes.

I have all of the above and more. Nearly 500 devices spread across
192.168.10.x, 15,x, 30,x 40.x, 60.x, and 70.x. I have Windows 98/2k/XP, Server
2000/03, Linux (Debian 3/4, Ubuntu 7.10), Dell managed switches,
HP/Brother/Lexmark printers, Linksys/Dlink print servers, HP NAS, and more.
It's a lot to look at and I need organization some how. These should be common
questions, but I have a more than a few and I haven't been able to find them
all.

1. How do I get Zenoss to see them all? Many seem to get "WARNING:zen.ZenDisc:no snmp found for ip =" and then are not listed.
2. Can Zenoss list all unknown IP's that it sees?

3. Not all workstations at remote locations have a common admin user or
password, can I put in multiple to check?

4. Do I need to run a client on every system or make changes?

5. Will I need to manually add my 500 some odd devices?

6. If so, how well does Zenoss detect unauthorized new devices?

7. Is there a good step by step document that covers installation and how to
set up Zenoss for most devices?

8. Anything I missed that I should know?
