Hello, welcome to Zenoss. I'm a pretty new user myself, but I think I can 
answer your questions:

For the alerting, I would just try and find a reasonable setting for the 
"Delay" option of the alerts. If your average drop is 3 minutes, set it for 5 
minutes (300). Then Zenoss won't page or email you unless connectivity has been 
down for 5 minutes. If it comes back before 5 minutes, you won't get alerted.

As far as google maps go, as far as I know Zenoss uses layer 3 routes (which it 
gets via SNMP) to learn the device relationships. So if all of your devices are 
ping-only, then Zenoss doesn't have a clue how everything connects together. 

There's a lot of talk about adding layer 2 info to Zenoss, which would overcome 
this limitation for you...
