I think they (readynas, drobo, Linux mdadm) can do it online, but either way, 
getting the job done is what matters most.  I'm talking about small consumer 
systems here, so single user backup devices or small office backup servers.  
They could handle going offline overnight to upgrade the redundant storage.

Since expanding RAID5 striping with parity is pretty straightforward, I figured 
ZFS was just a more complex spin on the standard.  

I assumed the minds behind ZFS at Sun had the implementation details under 
control.  Because if you need me to do it for you, we're all screwed :)
