Star is the oldest OSS tar implementation (it started in 1982).
Star is (in contrary to Sun's tar and to GNU tar) able to create
archives with attributes from recent POSIX standards and it implements
aprox. twice as many features than GNU tar without forcing you to learn
twice as many options ;-)
