I imagine this is probably more of a relic of Sun's abominably horrible
so-called "sales" department than an Oracle thing. Oracle, as inefficient as
they are, at least *has* salespeople. But Sun... I think Sun could have been
the next IBM if they had just wanted to... you, know - SELL STUFF. But their
response was always the same: "order it from the web site. If you don't want
that, call our resellers." Basically, "talk to the hand". There were several
times when I would essentially show up on Sun's doorstep with a couple million
dollars available to spend and said "hey, if you give us an hour or two of
pre-sales support, we'll give you this money." The response was, inevitably,
"talk to a reseller". And resellers only know one sentence: "Send us what you
need and we'll fax you a quote." There was never any technical sales advice
available whatsoever.

Sun basically beat its customers away with sticks and middle fingers. While
Dell and HP would come out and wine and dine the sysadmins, spew free swag
around like a firehose, buy you lap dances (well, OK, maybe not that last one)
and actually TRY to get sales... to Sun, pre-sales support didn't even exist.
Got a technical question? Read the web site.

OK, rant over. Sorry for going off-topic. As you can see, I'm not bitter at
all about the subject. :)
