I had imagined two buttons: "Reply" and "Reply List".

It does depend on how the list is used, of course, but the idea is convenience for those list users who want to take part, but use a web interface to browse the discussion instead of getting all the mail.

Hi,

I was wondering why the Reply button on mail-archive only generates a To: address to the previous mails originator.

Mostly, one wants replies to cc: the list address (at least on the lists I deal with). Could this go on the feature wish-list?

Why do you assume that the person browsing the archive is subscribed to the list? Most people won't be able to post, and will just generate bounces.
