[Assp-test] DNS Problems
I am constantly receiving DNS errors which then cause assp to die, as per the logs: Error: DNS - unable to create any UDP socket to nameservers () - This happens all the time on 5 assp systems that get a lot of mail traffic. The problem is not the DNS servers, as I have pointed them to many dns servers in addition to the amazon web service dns and they continue to die. I have a monit process that restarts assp automatically when this happens. I’m using version ASSP version 2.4.1(14097). I’ve tried different versions of Net-DNS as well, 0.74 which is the latest and 0.61 which is the recommended version by assp and both have the same issue. I have the reuse udp sockets on, but the error happens with or without that. Masood -- The best possible search technologies are now affordable for all companies. [Assp-test] DNSBL problem
Hello. I’m using the following assp version: 2.4.1(14097) I’m running a local rbl server, but it looks like I’m not getting any positive hits for anything in the DNSBL section beyond the external DNSBL that I use. The internal ones named such as rbl1.local are not working at all. In DNS setup I have useLocalDNS checked and DNSServers defined as the RBL servers. I have turned debugging on and it checks against the servers but never gets a positive hit for my *.local dnsbl entries. My RBL server is setup fine, as I have a local URIBL database that assp looks up against it and that works fine. I can also query the RBL server using dig and get positive hits for the addresses that are in there, but assp never gets a positive reply unless it is the externally hosted DNSBL I use or it is the local URIBL. [Assp-test] freqSpam
Hi. Does the freqSpam setting affect messages sent to sendAllSpam ? We have the spam collection frequency set to every 5 messages, but we want every single email that is tagged as spam to be sent to username@domain defined in sendAllSpam to the server specified in sendAllDestination. Will having freqSpam set to 5 prevent every single spam message from being sent to sendAllSpam? Thanks, Masood -- CenturyLink Cloud: The Leader in Enterprise Cloud Services. [Assp-test] Whitelisting by sender domain/ip recipient
Hi, I've been playing with the whitelisting in Assp 2.2. I am able to successfully add the following whitelists to the MySQL whitelist table without any issues. Also testing this works fine and the sender shows as whitelisted in the logs. sen...@domain.com,@recipientdomain.com sen...@domain.com,u...@recipientdomain.com But I am unable to replace sen...@domain.com with @domain.com or an IP address of a sending server in order to add whitelist entries on a per user/domain basis. Basically I want to give a recipient (whether that be a user or a domain administrator) the ability to whitelist a senders email domain and/or mail server. Is this possible? [Assp-test] Per domain whitelisting/blacklisting
Hello, Is there an ability to have a custom blacklist or whitelist on a per domain basis? I know as of recent versions of assp this at least seems possible with whitelisting. With the global privat, domain private, and privat only. If this is indeed possible with whitelisting at least, can someone please give me an example of each one that I can insert into the whitelist mysql table? I'll need to know the example values for pvalue and pfrozen for each record. Is the same possible for blacklisting? Thanks, Masood -- Everyone hates slow websites. So do we. [Assp-test] Statistics bug 2.0.1(3.0.23)
I've gotten the latest release and there is a bug with the stats not counting correctly. I have changed DelayIP to 40 in the IP Blocking section to greylist anything in the penalty box with a score over 40. This is working just fine however when looking at the stats this is not accounted for as part of the Messages Processed total nor is it reflected in the message statistics. I know this because after minutes of enabling it I checked the stats and I grep'd the log for the Delay, there were almost 1K delays in the log file starting at the time I enabled the feature and i had around 1K messages processed in the stats with around 66% blocked. It seems that this feature should reflect in the messages processed as well as increment Delayed/Greylisted which currently shows as 0 in the report because I don't have delaying/greylisting enabled beyond the above. I think it would be great if there was an option to greylist any server that produces a failure using a dnsbl. Re: [Assp-test] Scalable Linux Configuration
I want to share my server configuration for assp running on linux servers. I have several high volume servers running, some that process almost 2 million connections per day with this configuration. For the other settings I rebooted. Also assp restricts you to 999 connections in assp.pl if you specify 0 for maxSMTPSessions, so I modified assp.pl to change that to: 1999 in two places. I suppose you can enter 1999 in the webUI as well athough I haven't tried that. V2 is pretty stable now for me after I turned off the Bomb Regex stuff. Now it only dies occassionally after several days. I also have it restarting automatically once per day via a cron script. I use monitrc to check if assp is running every 2 minutes and start it if the process has died. Re: [Assp-test] Assp dying
Didn't get any responses to my message below so I'm resending. Also I have 0 set for session limits but see the following entry in my logs: Mar-26-10 21:03:05 [Main_Thread] Warning : SMTP-session-limit 999 is reached - SMTP listeners will be switched off More possible problems. After disabling the regex assp does not die on 2 servers, however sometimes on both of these servers assp stops accepting new requests. So I looked at the maillog file during one of these problems and found the following: Mar-24-10 13:50:49 [Worker_12] Error: Worker_12 accept to client failed IO::Socket::INET=GLOB(0x118cc5c8) (timeout: 2 s) : Too many open files Mar-24-10 13:50:49 [Worker_12] Error: Worker_12 accept to client failed IO::Socket::INET=GLOB(0x11907ee0) (timeout: 2 s) : Too many open files Mar-24-10 13:50:49 [Worker_12] Error: Worker_12 accept to client failed IO::Socket::INET=GLOB(0x9b0fd500) (timeout: 2 s) : Too many open files Mar-24-10 13:50:49 [Worker_12] Error: Worker_12 accept to client failed IO::Socket::INET=GLOB(0x936fd6f0) (timeout: 2 s) : Too many open files Mar-24-10 13:50:49 [Worker_12] Error: Worker_12 accept to client failed IO::Socket::INET=GLOB(0x9342ec98) (timeout: 2 s) : Too many open files Mar-24-10 13:50:49 [Worker_12] Error: Worker_12 accept to client failed IO::Socket::INET=GLOB(0x936785f0) (timeout: 2 s) : Too many open files After that the server stopped responding to requests on port 25 but assp was still running. I find this error interesting because I had already increased the number of open files allowed for the assp user the server runs as several months ago to 65500 in the /etc/security/limits.conf file. I verified these changes were valid by doing 'ulimit -a' as the assp user. I find it hard to believe assp has 65,500 files open??? After all I am using the mysql db and berkeley db for most everything now. So how come assp has so many files open? Is it possible that assp does not close open files correctly and as it runs throughout time this number just keeps increasing? In addition to finding a resolution on this it would be nice if assp automatically restarted itself in this case (which it did not do). Because the restart would have fixed the issue. Issue #2: I have assp restart itself automatically in a cron job, it usually works fine. However this time it looked like there was a problem retrieving the griplist? See the error below. Keep in mind (as I've told you) - running 10 SMTP-Workers (13 threads) + MySQL + ClamAV on a very high workload system will need a (dual? ) quadcore system (switch off hyperthreading - this will produce an unneeded overhead with Perl)! How much memory is used by assp? What is the average CPU usage of assp in relation to the whole system? Re: [Assp-test] Assp dying
Hey Scott, You are not alone. I have V2 running across 4 different linux servers with specs that vary and traffic that varies and they are all dying consistently. They don't die at all on v1.4.3.1. This is the reason I have stuck with that version, because in the past I have updated to the newer versions of v1 and they will all consistently die. I'm still trying to follow some of the recommendations here. So far perl 5.10.1 instead of 5.8.8 has not helped one bit. I'm in the final stages of trying to implement the BerkeleyDB stuff although most of the limited documentation looks like it is written for mysql so who knows if I will be able to get that to work correctly. As with your case the more the load the more likely assp v2 is dying. It just seems like when it gets to a point when the server can no longer handle the requests it just dies instead of timing out. I'll make sure the BerkeleyDB is working and if that doesn't solve the problem I'm going to downgrade back to v1. Which sucks because I was really interested in the multi-threading, now I'll have to live with slow responses to port 25 with v1. But anyway this much is certain, same server with the same traffic and setup will not die in v1, but will die in v2. I've verified this on 4 different machines. I don't think that bodes well for v2. If the ASSP dev team cannot get things to work where by a simple upgrade and doing nothing extra v2 doesn't at least operate consistently like v1 then people are just going to keep with v1. I have literally spent the past week trying to address these issues with v2 and so far I have gotten nowhere. I'm not really trying to knock v2 or the assp dev team, ASSP is a great open source product. Instead of pointing fingers and blaming it is better to arrive at solutions. Thomas I would tell you exactly why ASSP is dying if there was any information. What do you want me to do? There is no exception.log file, there is nothing in the log entry, no errors to the console anymore, etc.. Instead of using BerkeleyDB which I am unfamiliar with I am now using mysql on one of the servers. I have worked with mysql for 10 years, so that will not be an issue. And regarding professional equipment, what do you mean by that? All the equipment we use are dell poweredge servers with most having xeon processors and at least 2 GB of ram, running on 15K RPM SCSI hard drives and purchased within the last 2 years. Re: [Assp-test] Assp dying
For the past couple of hours I have been running v2 using the mysql database option for spamdb, penalty box, etc. I'm also using the BerkeleyDB option for all the caching options that it is available for. The results so far are very promising. System CPU usage is down, I have also turned on query caching on mysql and that has improved performance further. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the assp process does not die and if not then these measures have solved the problem. I do have a couple of related questions: * How do I make sure that when spamdb is rebuilt it is actually updating the spamdb table in the mysql database? I always just use a cron script that does the following: perl /usr/share/assp/rebuildspamdb.pl What additional measures do I have to do beyond that? * Same question above applies for pbdb.black.db, pbdb.ptr.db, etc... If I have set the Penaltybox to use DB: will that update the mysql tables approriately instead of updating the local flat files? * I'm getting a lot of warning messages as below in the maillog.txt file: Mar-16-10 15:19:01 [Main_Thread] Warning: got database error Database select statement failed: MySQL server has gone away at assp.pl line 7347 I know this is the result of the mysql connection not available to that thread anymore, I have set a mysql timeout of 120 seconds to avoid hung processes/connections. Does ASSP need persistent mysql connections? I don't mind getting rid of the timeout or making it something really large as long as the max mysql connections which I have set to 2048 are not exhausted as a result. I appreciate the help. think it will use too much CPU in any case on your system ! Approximately 275,000 connections per day. 275,000 - I recommend you to use a quadcore or better a dual quadcore 64-Bit system with at least 2GB free RAM (better more - (eg) 4GB physical). It could be better to use two systems in your case. One for ASSP (and ClamAV) and one for DNS and MySQL/oracle...! Just start with one system - you'll see if you need a second one. Install at least BerkeleyDB 4.7 engine and reinstall BerkeleyDB.pm 0.41 via CPAN. Install MySQL 5.x , create a DB (eg) 'assp' , use the InnoDB engine. , configure MySQL to enable at least 1000 connections configure assp to use BerkeleyDB for Griplist, internal hashes and rebuildspamdb hashes configure assp to use MySQL for all Main-Hashes (whitelistdb, redlistdb ... pbdb) Import your flat files in to the MySQL DB. If all is running well - open the GUI and reconfigure 'SSLCertFile' and 'SSLKeyFile' to the default values (click on the value name - link) to correct the wrong values. Re: [Assp-test] Assp dying
Charles, You really think that is the issue? I mean all these records like RWLCache, etc. had similar number of records in it before when this same server was processing the same number of connections and was not dying using assp version 1.4.3.1. So I don't think just because I upgraded to v2 these same files that are not in a db would cause problems. Although I didn't write the assp code so I can't say for certain. Could we have the beginning of the page title represent the page function? For example: Info/Stats: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @ xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Maillog: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @ xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Analyzer: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @ xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Whitelist/Redlist: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @ xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Worker: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @ xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Connections: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @ xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx etc., etc.. The function should be at the start of the page title, so that it's most immediate and does not get cut off by tab name shortening to fit the given browser window width. HTH.
