[Assp-test] DNS Problems

2014-05-26 Thread Masood Rahim
I am constantly receiving DNS errors which then cause assp to die, as per the
logs:
Error: DNS - unable to create any UDP socket to nameservers () -

This happens all the time on 5 assp systems that get a lot of mail traffic.
The problem is not the DNS servers, as I have pointed them to many dns servers
in addition to the amazon web service dns and they continue to die. I have a
monit process that restarts assp automatically when this happens.

I’m using version ASSP version 2.4.1(14097). I’ve tried different versions of
Net-DNS as well, 0.74 which is the latest and 0.61 which is the recommended
version by assp and both have the same issue.

I have the reuse udp sockets on, but the error happens with or without that.

[Assp-test] DNSBL problem

2014-05-08 Thread Masood Rahim
Hello.
I’m using the following assp version: 2.4.1(14097)

I’m running a local rbl server, but it looks like I’m not getting any positive
hits for anything in the DNSBL section beyond the external DNSBL that I use.
The internal ones named such as rbl1.local are not working at all.

In DNS setup I have useLocalDNS checked and DNSServers defined as the RBL
servers. I have turned debugging on and it checks against the servers but
never gets a positive hit for my *.local dnsbl entries. My RBL server is setup
fine, as I have a local URIBL database that assp looks up against it and that
works fine. I can also query the RBL server using dig and get positive hits
for the addresses that are in there, but assp never gets a positive reply
unless it is the externally hosted DNSBL I use or it is the local URIBL.

Any ideas why this isn’t working?

[Assp-test] freqSpam

2014-01-24 Thread Masood Rahim
Hi. Does the freqSpam setting affect messages sent to sendAllSpam ? We have
the spam collection frequency set to every 5 messages, but we want every single
email that is tagged as spam to be sent to username@domain defined in
sendAllSpam to the server specified in sendAllDestination.

Will having freqSpam set to 5 prevent every single spam message from being sent
to sendAllSpam?

Thanks,
Masood

[Assp-test] spamdb/hmmdb

2013-10-17 Thread Masood Rahim
Hi,

I'm a little confused with the generation of the spamdb and hmmdb in assp.
Both are using a mysql database with the corresponding tables. It seems that
right now the hmmdb is filled with all the records that are supposed to be
there but the spamdb has one record that says pkey: ***bayesnorm***, pvalue:
100, pfrozen: 0

Why does the hmmdb build correctly but spamdb does not? Below is the output
from the most recent rebuildrun. autoCorrectCorpus is set to: 0.6-1.4-4000-14

was updating the spamdb as well.

server only for a recipient domain or receipt email address.

Just to summarize, I want to be able to whitelist a senders domain on a per

I also need to whitelist a sender email address for a recipient domain and a

Can you please elaborate how this resolves my problem? As far as I know the

[Assp-test] Whitelisting by sender domain/ip recipient

2013-03-01 Thread Masood Rahim
Hi,

I've been playing with the whitelisting in Assp 2.2. I am able to successfully
add the following whitelists to the MySQL whitelist table without any issues.
Also testing this works fine and the sender shows as whitelisted in the logs.

sen...@domain.com,@recipientdomain.com
sen...@domain.com,u...@recipientdomain.com

But I am unable to replace sen...@domain.com with @domain.com or an IP address
of a sending server in order to add whitelist entries on a per user/domain
basis. Basically I want to give a recipient (whether that be a user or a
domain administrator) the ability to whitelist a senders email domain and/or
mail server.
Is this possible? If so can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Masood

[Assp-test] Per domain whitelisting/blacklisting

2013-01-31 Thread Masood Rahim
Hello,

Is there an ability to have a custom blacklist or whitelist on a per domain
basis? I know as of recent versions of assp this at least seems possible with
whitelisting. With the global privat, domain private, and privat only. If
this is indeed possible with whitelisting at least, can someone please give me
an example of each one that I can insert into the whitelist mysql table? I'll
need to know the example values for pvalue and pfrozen for each record.

Is the same possible for blacklisting?

Thanks,

Masood

[Assp-test] How to enable Regex Optimizer?

[Assp-test] Statistics bug 2.0.1(3.0.23)

2011-06-09 Thread Masood Rahim
I've gotten the latest release and there is a bug with the stats not counting
correctly. I have changed DelayIP to 40 in the IP Blocking section to greylist
anything in the penalty box with a score over 40. This is working just fine
however when looking at the stats this is not accounted for as part of the
Messages Processed total nor is it reflected in the message statistics. I know
this because after minutes of enabling it I checked the stats and I grep'd the
log for the Delay, there were almost 1K delays in the log file starting at the
time I enabled the feature and i had around 1K messages processed in the stats
with around 66% blocked.

It seems that this feature should reflect in the messages processed as well as
increment Delayed/Greylisted which currently shows as 0 in the report because I
don't have delaying/greylisting enabled beyond the above.

Thanks,

Masood

I think it would be great if there was an option to greylist any server that

Thomas,

I checked the sync service (really excited about this!) but cannot get it
right for some reason. I did everything you instructed in the webgui but i
am always getting a failure when setting the password!
a popup returns with: Invalid 'syncCFGPass' - Unchange. and in red under
password it states: *** Invalid: 'mypassword' (check returned
'cm9vdDpBY3Rpb24h')

Any idea what i am doing wrong here !

Thanks!

Re: [Assp-test] Scalable Linux Configuration

2010-04-13 Thread Masood Rahim
I want to share my server configuration for assp running on linux servers.
I have several high volume servers running, some that process almost 2
million connections per day with this configuration. I am running v2,
however these server wide settings work for v1 as well:

/etc/security/limits.conf

asspsoftmemlock 6400
assphardmemlock 6400
asspsoftnofile 13
assphardnofile 13
asspsoftstack 1024000
assphardstack 1024000
asspsoftnoproc 5
assphardnoproc 5

(The above assumes you are running assp as the assp user.)

/etc/sysctl.conf

net.core.rmem_max = 16777216
net.core.wmem_max = 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 65536 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_no_metrics_save = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_moderate_rcvbuf = 1
net.core.netdev_max_backlog = 2500

For the sysctl settings you can make them take effect by typing 'sysctl -p'.
For the other settings I rebooted.

Also assp restricts you to 999 connections in assp.pl if you specify 0 for
maxSMTPSessions, so I modified assp.pl to change that to: 1999 in two
places.
I suppose you can enter 1999 in the webUI as well athough I haven't tried
that.

V2 is pretty stable now for me after I turned off the Bomb Regex stuff. Now
it only dies occassionally after several days. I also have it restarting
automatically once per day via a cron script. I use monitrc to check if
assp is running every 2 minutes and start it if the process has died.
Needless to say no pages in the middle of the night anymore!

How do things end up in the SBCache table in v2?

SBCache caches the information in which country the IP is registered and for
which company and domain it is registered.

The last update on Wiki for Version 2 was on 22.03.2010 I have seen a
new Version 2.0.1(1.0.08) this was on the mailinglist

Pick the latest version here

http://assp.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/assp/assp2/

notice that the above version is different from the ones published on SF
since it uses the above CVS server to fetch the latest updates; also notice
that such version may be considered an unstable one (although in my
experience it's usually quite stable :D)

Bottom line; if you want to go for stable, pick the version from SF, if
otherwise you want to follow the latest updates and use the beta, pick the
above version

How would you write a bombre regex to catch the following:
filename=UPS_invoice_2794.zip

I've tried: filename=UPS_invoice_{1,4}.zip and variants with greater
numbers like {1,10}
However, the ASSP analyzer doesn't pick it up.

Also, the following statement creates a huge error in the ASSP Log
(essentially the whole bombre.txt file is in there):
(?si)the.branch.manager.{1,10}of.the.Eco.Bank.Of.Ghana.Limited

The end of the log entry says:

Any advice would be most welcome!

Sorry,

There's supposed to be a \ before the period. I forgot to add it when

IO::Socket::INET=GLOB(0x936785f0) (timeout: 2 s) : Too many open files

After that the server stopped responding to requests on port 25 but assp was
still running. I find this error interesting because I had already
increased the number of open files allowed for the assp user the server runs
as several months ago to 65500 in the /etc/security/limits.conf file. I
verified these changes were valid by doing 'ulimit -a' as the assp user. I
find it hard to believe assp has 65,500 files open??? After all I am using
the mysql db and berkeley db for most everything now. So how come assp has
so many files open? Is it possible that assp does not close open files
correctly and as it runs throughout time this number just keeps increasing?
In addition to finding a resolution on this it would be nice if assp
automatically restarted itself in this case (which it did not do). Because
the restart would have fixed the issue.

Issue #2:

I have assp restart itself automatically in a cron job, it usually works
fine. However this time it looked like there was a problem retrieving the
griplist? See the error below. As a result ASSP never restarted correctly
and just sat their not processing any incoming requests until I restarted it
again.

Hello

when using PB verbose log isn't better having something like this (in a
single row) Mar-24-10 12:56:13 203.247.63.94 scleroti...@toutgratuit.com

instead of this (in 2 rows) ?
Mar-24-10 12:56:13 203.247.63.94 scleroti...@toutgratuit.com to:
cr...@haliden.com [scoring] (PTR missing); Mar-24-10 12:56:13 203.247.63.94

The reason was, that the probability was below 1 ( even when shown as
1).
ASSP uses a formula to calculate the valence from the probability.
I will change it so, that it will work with 1 if it shows 1.

So after using the mysql db and tweaking some settings on 2 servers here
are
my findings on my problem:

Both servers die complaining about the following line in the
debugSignal.txt
(I think this might be related to Scott's issue):
while (time - $itime = $maxBombSearchTime  $text =~ s/($regex)//) {

I turned off all the regex/spam bomb stuff and that error went away. As a
result one server has been online for almost 72 hours straight without
having the assp process die. The other server still keeps dying at the
following line (CIDR section) as per the debugSignal.txt file:

($ret) = ('4'.unpack 'B32', pack 'C4', split /\./xms, $ip)=~/($reRE)/xms;

Masood,

warning: got unexpected signal SEGV.

These error are most related to the regex engine of Perl. Maybe the reason
is a very high (100%) CPU workload over some time.

Worker_2: Can't call method
fetchrow_arrayref on an undefined value at

The MySQL server was not able to do a SQL-select statement. Is the MySQL
server running on the same system ? Maybe Perl (assp) , MySQL, ClamAV and
possibly some other processes are fighting for system resources!?

It looks like the system is going out of system resources (memory -
CPU-time). Keep in mind (as I've told you) - running 10 SMTP-Workers (13
threads) + MySQL + ClamAV on a very high workload system will need
a (dual? ) quadcore system (switch off hyperthreading - this will produce an
unneeded overhead with Perl)! How much memory is used by assp? What is the
average CPU usage of assp in relation to the whole system?

2010-03-16 Thread Masood Rahim

Hey Scott,

You are not alone. I have V2 running across 4 different linux servers with
specs that vary and traffic that varies and they are all dying consistently.
They don't die at all on v1.4.3.1. This is the reason I have stuck with
that version, because in the past I have updated to the newer versions of v1
and they will all consistently die.

I'm still trying to follow some of the recommendations here. So far perl
5.10.1 instead of 5.8.8 has not helped one bit. I'm in the final stages of
trying to implement the BerkeleyDB stuff although most of the limited
documentation looks like it is written for mysql so who knows if I will be
able to get that to work correctly.

As with your case the more the load the more likely assp v2 is dying. It
just seems like when it gets to a point when the server can no longer handle
the requests it just dies instead of timing out. I'll make sure the
BerkeleyDB is working and if that doesn't solve the problem I'm going to
downgrade back to v1. Which sucks because I was really interested in the
multi-threading, now I'll have to live with slow responses to port 25 with
v1.

But anyway this much is certain, same server with the same traffic and setup
will not die in v1, but will die in v2. I've verified this on 4 different
machines. I don't think that bodes well for v2. If the ASSP dev team
cannot get things to work where by a simple upgrade and doing nothing extra
v2 doesn't at least operate consistently like v1 then people are just going
to keep with v1. I have literally spent the past week trying to address
these issues with v2 and so far I have gotten nowhere.

Masood

I'm not really trying to knock v2 or the assp dev team, ASSP is a great open
source product. Instead of pointing fingers and blaming it is better to
arrive at solutions. Thomas I would tell you exactly why ASSP is dying if
there was any information. What do you want me to do? There is no
exception.log file, there is nothing in the log entry, no errors to the
console anymore, etc..

Instead of using BerkeleyDB which I am unfamiliar with I am now using mysql
on one of the servers. I have worked with mysql for 10 years, so that will
not be an issue. And regarding professional equipment, what do you mean
by that? All the equipment we use are dell poweredge servers with most
having xeon processors and at least 2 GB of ram, running on 15K RPM SCSI
hard drives and purchased within the last 2 years.

I'll report back if the mysql integration and subsequent changes I have made
provide any stability. I'll also look to do some mysql optimization to
improve the performance.

Re: [Assp-test] Assp dying

2010-03-16 Thread Masood Rahim
For the past couple of hours I have been running v2 using the mysql database
option for spamdb, penalty box, etc. I'm also using the BerkeleyDB option
for all the caching options that it is available for. The results so far
are very promising. System CPU usage is down, I have also turned on query
caching on mysql and that has improved performance further. I am keeping my
fingers crossed that the assp process does not die and if not then these
measures have solved the problem.

I do have a couple of related questions:

* How do I make sure that when spamdb is rebuilt it is actually updating the
spamdb table in the mysql database? I always just use a cron script that
does the following: perl /usr/share/assp/rebuildspamdb.pl
What additional measures do I have to do beyond that?

* Same question above applies for pbdb.black.db, pbdb.ptr.db, etc... If I
have set the Penaltybox to use DB: will that update the mysql tables
approriately instead of updating the local flat files?

* I'm getting a lot of warning messages as below in the maillog.txt file:
Mar-16-10 15:19:01 [Main_Thread] Warning: got database error Database select
statement failed: MySQL server has gone away at assp.pl line 7347

I know this is the result of the mysql connection not available to that
thread anymore, I have set a mysql timeout of 120 seconds to avoid hung
processes/connections. Does ASSP need persistent mysql connections? I
don't mind getting rid of the timeout or making it something really large as
long as the max mysql connections which I have set to 2048 are not exhausted
as a result.

I appreciate the help.

Thanks,

2010-03-15 Thread Masood Rahim
I'm trying to update the Berkeley DB engine to work with assp v2, however I
can't seem to have ASSP recognize the updated engine. I have tried to do
everything from installing via cpan which says it is up to date to
downloading and building the Berkeley DB from the oracle site. Whenever I
restart assp I get the following warning:

Mar-15-10 10:05:04 [init] DB_File module version 1.82 installed - DB_File
(Berkeley V1) database usage available
Mar-15-10 10:05:04 [init] Warning: BerkeleyDB database version 4.3 /
Sleepycat Software: Berkeley DB 4.3.29: (September 12, 2006) installed - but
at least version 4.5 is required - Berkeley database usage not available

Also if I was converting my flat files to the Berkeley DB format would assp
do so automatically upon startup assuming the Berkeley DB version is ok? Or
would I have to run some special commands to import the existing flat files
into the Berkeley DB format prior to starting ASSP with BerkeleyDB support?

Thanks.

installs 2.012, but now the admin interface reports not installed.

think it will use too much
CPU in any case on your system !

Approximately 275,000 connections per day.

275,000 - I recommend you to use a quadcore or better a dual quadcore
64-Bit system with at least 2GB free RAM (better more - (eg) 4GB physical).

available

(allocating at least 59.6MB) - it is highly recommeded to use a database for
'pbdb'

Build a physical system that is able to do the job! It could be better to
use two systems in your case. One for ASSP (and ClamAV) and one for DNS and
MySQL/oracle...!
Just start with one system - you'll see if you need a second one.

Install at least BerkeleyDB 4.7 engine and reinstall BerkeleyDB.pm 0.41 via
CPAN.

Install MySQL 5.x , create a DB (eg) 'assp' , use the InnoDB engine. ,
configure MySQL to enable at least 1000 connections

configure assp to use BerkeleyDB for Griplist, internal hashes and
rebuildspamdb hashes

configure assp to use MySQL for all Main-Hashes (whitelistdb, redlistdb
... pbdb)

Import your flat files in to the MySQL DB.

To minimize the workload of your system (DNS, DB), try to block connections
as early as possible (helo, IP, PTR, MX...) - content based blocking (bayes,
bombs ...) should be minimized.

If all is running well - open the GUI and reconfigure 'SSLCertFile' and
'SSLKeyFile' to the default values (click on the value name - link) to
correct the wrong values.
Reserve at least one SMTP-Worker for outgoing mails.
Do not use the ASSP_OCR.pm plugin!

Is there anybody in the list, who has a similar workload on his V2 system?
Maybe you can give Masood some more informations.

Thomas

Hi,

I have answered your questions below regarding the assp process dying
constantly. It seems like it is now dying more frequently (several times
per day) after upgrading to perl 5.10.1 vs using the perl 5.8.8 I used to be
using which would die maybe once or twice a day.

is there a file exception.log in the assp dir ?

Nope.

Nope, nothing there. When I look at the end of the maillog.txt file after

processed.
Do you use any DB for the hashes. Has you configured assp to use

I don't use the DB for anything. Also I'm not using the BerkeleyDB for

As a follow up to my email regarding assp crashing below, I updated perl to
5.10.1. I downloaded the latest v2 assp.pl file last night. After a few
hours assp died again. I don't have any other debugging information.

I have the most recent versions of v2 installed on several servers and
randomly assp crashes. This has happened with at least 2 different versions
of assp most recently 2.0.2 0.0.01. There is never any message in the log
file. I know that it has crashed because when I restart assp it tries to
stop assp and shows that no process was found to stop. Anyway this happened
again today and I restarted it, a few minutes later on the console window I
saw the following error when assp crashed again. I am using Red Hat
Enterprise Linux Server release 5.2.

This version and all subsequent versions require a Perl version 5.10.0
(5.01) or higher !

That just killed using it on Macintosh OS X Leopard (10.5.x). :-(

If someone uses Perl 5.8.8 and is unable to upgrade Perl to 5.10 the
 line
3059 of assp.pl could[/should] be changed or commented out.

Commenting this out for every automatic update is not really going to work
well in the real world. Is there a way for the installer to comment it out
if 5.8.8 is the installed version of perl?

How ever, I'll no more support ASSP V2 running on a unsupported Perl
version!

Again, that just killed assp for Leopard users. :-(

T.

I don't have any other debugging information.

is there a file exception.log in the assp dir ?
are there any errors or warnings logged in mallog.txt ?

Do you use any DB for the hashes. Has you configured assp to use BerkeleyDB

How is the memory usage of assp?
How many SMTP workers are running?
How many connection per day?

As a follow up to my email regarding assp crashing below, I updated perl to
5.10.1. I downloaded the latest v2 assp.pl file last night. After a few
hours assp died again. I don't have any other debugging information.

Charles,

You really think that is the issue? I mean all these records like RWLCache,
etc. had similar number of records in it before when this same server was
processing the same number of connections and was not dying using assp
version 1.4.3.1. So I don't think just because I upgraded to v2 these same
files that are not in a db would cause problems. Although I didn't write
the assp code so I can't say for certain.

Thanks,
Masood

Well, you sure do have a whole bunch of these kinds of warnings:

Mar-11-10 16:38:16 [init] Warning: RWLCache contains 255631 records
(allocating at least 59.6MB) - it is highly recommeded to use a database for
'pbdb'

Maybe this is the problem?

Thomas: 'recommeded' is mis-spelled - it should be recommended...

 Nope.

are there any errors or warnings logged in mallog.txt ?
Nope, nothing there. When I look at the end of the maillog.txt file
after the assp process has died it just has a log entry of the last
 connection it processed.
Do you use any DB for the hashes. Has you configured assp to use
 BerkeleyDB

I don't use the DB for anything. Also I'm not using the BerkeleyDB
for internal caches, nor am I using it for rebuildspamdb, nor am I
 using it for griplist.
How is the memory usage of assp?
System has 512 MB of memory, I just restarted the ASSP process and 5
minutes later it is currently utilizing 51.2% of memory and over 100%
of CPU. (This server does nothing else but ASSP).

How many SMTP workers are running?
 10
 How many connection per day?
 Approximately 275,000 connections per day.

Currently the page title is just the name of the server, e.g.:

When one has several tabs of a browser open to different assp pages, all

Could we have the beginning of the page title represent the page function?
For example:

 Info/Stats: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @
 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

 Maillog: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @
 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

 Analyzer: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @

 Whitelist/Redlist: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @

 Worker: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @
 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

 Connections: ASSP (serverdomain.com) Host: serverhostname.com @
 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

 etc., etc..

The function should be at the start of the page title, so that it's most
immediate and does not get cut off by tab name shortening to fit the given
browser window width.
