Just to pick a nit: it was referred to as the MICR line (Magnetic Ink Character
Recognition). Kinda sounded like MITRE.

Years ago (before electronic payments and deposits) I recall that it was
possible to program GnuCash to print the MITRE line, as it used to be called,
but you needed to use special magnetic ink so that check readers could read
them reliably. I imagine that it is still possible, but hardly necessary in
the United States, anyway. I think that you used to get the supplies from a
company called Checksoft. Back then banks weren't very cooperative because
mistakes could wreak havoc in the clearing houses, and today they would be even
less cooperative due to increased fraud concerns.
If you are really an alum of Southwest Bell, you are probably a U. S.
citizen and probably already using electronic deposits and payments, so I
suspect that your interest may be mostly academic to show your grandchildren.

Re: [GNC] check printing

2024-04-06 Thread fliegersonic.net
There will always be non-digital methods of payment. I use preprinted checks
with GnuCash and my only issue is
that I haven't figured out how to associate an address with a payee - I'm sure
it's there, but

I will hate it if we can no longer use checks because transacting in cash is
possible but inconvenient.

It will be just academic.
NZ (New Zealand, Aotearoa) ceased using them in 2021.
Australia promises to be cheque free by 2030.
My bank in Au will stop accepting cheques from this May.

Thanks for responding. I print checks from more than I bank. I have

find a software or software integration that will print routing and

Actually, it’s not academic. There are still many workers in the US
that want a check payment once the work is done. Right now I have a
printer with MICR ink that does print routing and account numbers. I
print from different bank accounts, so it is so easy to print checks on

20 or so years ago I had a small company and used check-printing software to
make the checks. I used generic pre-printed forms and the software included the

I was wondering if you need to use a pre-printed check or can you use
blank check stock and have the routing and account numbers printed out
by GnuCash.

Got me. The only potential difference is the version and OS. Don’t know
whether anyone else has had a similar experience...

Re: [GNC] Check printing

2021-06-15 Thread Bruce Irving
Hi, Victor.
I use the same format as you.

I still can't understand why I create 8 transactions in the Checking
account, everything is the same except the number and payee. Only one of
those checks would print. For the rest of them, it goes through the
procedure on screen but when I click the final print, it does not go to the
printer! I have to hand write those 7 checks.

Re: [GNC] Check printing

2021-06-14 Thread R. Victor Klassen
That would depend upon the number you’re doing in a given period.

I have payroll output to QIF which when imported gives me the stub I need. And
it fits the window envelope just fine.

I would hate to have to edit each and every cheque.

Re: [GNC] Check printing

When I do what you describe - except for the format - it works fine. So
someone else will have to chime in here.

This is a matter where because of personal professional experience, I
would strongly suggest that checks not be printed directly from gnucash.
In other words, "print" to file which then could be processed by an
editor before being sent to a printer.

Why?

There is potentially some "fine tuning" required in the exact
formatting. I am thinking of the general case, say printing payroll
checks which may be required to come attached to a "stub" << statement
for the employee showing all deductions, etc. >> and if to be mailed,
when folded, the address must show properly in the envelope window.

It is MUCH easier to deal with issues like "the new envelopes have the
window in a slightly different position" by fixing in that in between
editing program. Much easier than trying to make the change in the
application writing the checks or madly dashing around trying to find a
supplier of envelopes with the window in the old position. This is one
of the things I used to have to deal with, an emergency call from the
department doing the printing, folding, envelope stuffing that all of a
sudden the address out of window.

Note that IF doing this (having that intermediate editor step) you can
also relieve gnucash of all details like font size, font used, logos,
etc. and instead do all the formatting/pretty printing with a full power
editor.

Re: [GNC] Check printing

2021-06-11 Thread David Carlson
I believe there was something more to the printing part of the process
because GnuCash has to be aware of whether there are one, two or three
blank checks in the first sheet.

What I would do under your circumstances is fill out all the details in the
register for the first one, duplicate transaction and edit the payee and
number fields, and so on until I had them all in the register. Then command-p
on the Mac for each of them. It might be control-p on your platform I don’t
know. Does that not work?

[GNC] Check printing

2021-06-10 Thread Bruce Irving
I'm getting to the point that I can rarely read my own handwriting. So I
started playing with printing checks from GC bank reisters.
I am using 'Quicken/QuickBooks (tm) US-Letter 3-part' checks in GC Version
4.4 Flatpak under Peppermint 10 (based on Ubuntu 16?? or 18??)
It works - sometimes. If I "print" a check, and the printer mis-behaves, I
can't reprint it! The other day, I needed to write eight checks to
different parties, other than the payee, the checks were the same, I could
only print one of them! I had to hand write the others.
Is there any way that I can get a check to reprint? Or, to print multiple
nearly identical checks?

No, sorry, only reports can be printed from the command line, nor is it
possible to make check printing available from the command line as it's
currently implemented as it prints the currently selected transaction from a
register. What's more all of the printing functions are internal to
dialog-print-check so there's no way for you to script them or even call them
from another C program.

[GNC] Check printing via the command line?

2020-07-17 Thread Tom Browder
Is there any way to access the check printing capability of GnuCash via a
CLI?

I haven't tried it via the GUI yet. I just became interested this morning
when I had to write a check manually and, being of advanced age with
not-so-good hand-writing, thought about the GnuCash software I've been
using since I dumped Quicken many years ago.

Note I only use it on Windows at the moment (mainly for access for my
Windows-only wife), but can use it on my Debian at any time. I'm not
interested so much interfacing with my account data as in getting the
printing and check templating access at the moment.

I see only one GnuCash module on CPAN, but that doesn't do what I need,
although it does provide some help with developing Perl interfaces.

I mainly program in Raku now (see https://raku.org) and its NativeCall
access will help create the necessary interface if the API is reasonably
documented or if some kind soul can point me in the right direction. I will
of course publish anything I write that may be useful to others (see my
repos at https://github.com/tbrowder).

Yes. See Appendix D of the Tutuorial and Concepts Guide for all the gory

text between the amount and the signature line? I need is to place the
text "Void after ninety days" on every check written. I don't need to
order more checks since the account will be closed in July.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Jay

Re: [GNC] Check printing issue: Windows 10/GnuCash 3.4

2019-02-26 Thread Geert Janssens
Hi Steven,

You have asked your question at the right list :)

The problem you experiencs is a known bug:
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797011

The good news is this bug has been fixed since the gnucash 3.4 release and
will be in GnuCash 3.5 which is planned for the end or March.

If you can't wait that long, you could also download and install a recent
nightly build for Windows which you can find here:
https://code.gnucash.org/builds/win32/maint/

The installers you find there are not formal releases, but have a few more
bugs fixed than the last official release.

Regards,

Geert

[GNC] Check printing issue: Windows 10/GnuCash 3.4

2019-02-26 Thread Steven Morrison
I apologize if this is going to the wrong user list...this is the first
time I've posted a question.

I opened an existing account file following a clean install of Windows
10 and GnuCash 3.4, and found the program ran correctly and printed all
reports, except for selecting File > Print Checks that either
immediately crashed the program or opened the check printing window that
then crashed the program if I "clicked" anywhere on the form.  In
addition the Address portion of the form is grayed out.

In an effort to make sure I had a clean installation of GnuCash, I
removed the program, edited all references out of the registry file, and
reinstalled GnuCash, only to have the same problem occur.

The GnuCash trace function returns this message:

* 10:58:17  CRIT  free_check_format: assertion
'data' failed

A search of Windows error messages makes me think there is a problem
with access to one of the libraries, but I don't know how to locate what
the problem is...or perhaps to effect a repair. Any chance someone could
point me in the proper direction?
