[LincolnTalk] Next week is Walk, Bike & Roll to School Week at Lincoln School

2022-04-27 Thread Ginger Reiner
Next week, May 2 - 6, is Walk, Bike & Roll to School Week at Lincoln
School!

We are looking for volunteers to help as crossing guards and to hand out
bracelets - do you have time between 7:20am and 8am any mornings next
week? Please volunteer here:

https://forms.gle/EAzfYVcLc9gTemV2A

Students and families are challenged to ditch the car and get to school
under their own power. Bus riders can participate by walking or biking to
the bus stop or around their neighborhood. Get some exercise, avoid some
emissions and have some fun!

Walkers and bikers will collect a different colored bracelet each day.
Collect all 5 colors for a Friday afternoon prize.

Thank you!

2022-04-27 Thread Susan Taylor
Strategic Planning Community Virtual Forum
You are invited to join the School Committee for a Strategic Planning Community
Forum on May 5th. All community members are encouraged to join in this working
meeting to begin the strategic planning process for the 2022-2023 school year.

Strategic Priorities.

May is the time when the District begins the process of reflecting upon the
progress we have made this year and analyzing all available information and
data to inform our decisions about setting Strategic Priorities for the next
school year.

The open virtual planning session will consist of sharing context about where
we are as a school district and the direction that we are headed in, followed
by breakout group conversations that allow us to hear from our stakeholders
about what is important to you and where you feel we should be placing our
resources and focus.

We encourage community members, family members, students, and school employees
to join the District Administration Team and School Committee to share your
thoughts and ideas. The input gathered during this forum will inform the work
of the Administration and the School Committee as we develop our priorities for
the coming school year.

Below is the invitation to participate in the Strategic Planning Community
Forum. Pre-registration is required and will help us to plan the event to
ensure it is efficient and effective based upon the number of participants
present. Information about this year’s Strategic Priorities and the Strategic
Maps that outline specific actions and outcomes can be found on the
Superintendent’s webpage .

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information

[LincolnTalk] Laundry Services - seeking recommendations

2022-04-27 Thread Bill Rizzo
Good afternoon. We have been using Dependable Laundry of Watertown for laundry
and dry cleaning pick-up and delivery, which lately has become...well...quite
undependable. They are constantly misplacing or mis-delivering our laundry and
even lost forever one batch of our laundry (any of you out there get a
charitable delivery of mostly clean flannel shirts and jeans a few months ago?).

Any suggestions for another service which picks up and delivers in Lincoln
twice a week and which is a bit more reliable? Our needs are more for basic
laundry (wash, dry and fold) than dry cleaning.

Thanks so much. Bill Rizzo

Re: [LincolnTalk] LS continues to slip

2022-04-27 Thread Lisa via Lincoln
Just to be a little provocative here...what is our primary objective
when reviewing these "rankings"?

Is it linked primarily to how well our children will do compared to
other children in order to get into college? (if so, how much does it
matter "which" college or simply 'best fit' for the kid)? None of the
'rankings' can really assess how well prepared a community's graduates
are for their next step - college, job, whatever. That's a combo of
skills, exposure, independence, maturity, opportunity, etc. They can be
'placed' with guidance counselors' help or not, and sometimes the
counselors aim too low or frankly places that are NOT a good fit (the
percentage of students transferring to a different college after year
one was rising for quite some time prepandemic).

Is it more for home valuations in the town of Lincoln compared to other
communities? (if so AP options, weighted grades etc. matter less;
potential home buyers rarely dig that deep).

Any reasonably self-motivated student can thrive at LS. I think the
real question is whether our kids are making the most of the
opportunities they are presented -- be that at private or public
schools. For those that may need more support or a big push, LS may not
be the best choice, particularly when they are coming from a very small
community like Lincoln. LS has a long history of wanting students to
learn how to advocate for themselves. This is a wonderful life
skill...which needs parents to step aside and only coach from the
sidelines.

I agree with Bryce, Sara and Diana...don't overthink the rankings, put
them into perspective, and question the things that matter more.

Well said and agreed.

I'm waiting - as I think we all are - for Dennis to dive through the
ranking criteria and provide some insight as to why some schools are
ranking better than others. As I've said on this forum before, both of
my boys are having very good experiences at LS, but that's just our
experience.

I did go and look at SAT performance for Mass schools and our students
average a combined score of 1274. I think it's fair to use SAT scores
as a proxy for college readiness, but feel free to disagree. I know
that many schools are switching back from "test optional" because the
SATs (or ACTs) are still the best indicator of academic success
freshman year. That 1274 ranks around 16th out of the districts listed
(around 300) and tied or better than Needham, Dover-Sherborn,
Winchester, Maynard. But trailing schools like Lexington (1356!), AB
(1333), Wayland (1302) or Concord-Carlisle (1286).

I've found that LS does things differently from what I anticipated...
there's no class rank, there's not a HUGE emphasis on AP classes, they
don't weight grades based on tougher course segments, etc... but the
course offerings are plentiful and the teachers are incredible.

On Wed, Apr 27, 2022 at 10:15 AM Sara Lupkas
wrote:
I agree that the rankings are pretty meaningless. And LS is one of
only 8 districts in MA where more than 90% of AP tests taken resulted
in a score of 3 or higher:

https://www.wcvb.com/article/massachusetts-students-led-nation-in-ap-exam-success-in-2021-these-districts-led-the-way/39611943

No school district is perfect but I feel like LPS and LS work very
hard to meet the needs of their students, ranging from special
education services to enrichment and honors/AP classes. I also am glad
that my kids don't feel the achievement pressure that exists in some
neighboring districts, and that there is a strong emphasis on kindness
and inclusivity that I've seen.

My kids are still young and in elementary school, but these rankings
are next to meaningless. Fun to look at, but have no direct
correlation to real life achievement. I have no qualms at this point
about sending my kids to LS.

The focus should be on providing the appropriate educational development at an
early age and how best to exceed expectations, that is the same example which
should be set for academics from our small district. We should all be asking
the questions as to why our town ranks so low.

Lincoln School 2021 Rankings
Lincoln School is ranked #162 in Massachusetts Elementary Schools and ranked
#58 in Massachusetts Middle Schools. Schools are ranked on their performance on
state-required tests, graduation, and how well they prepare their students for

Re: [LincolnTalk] LS continues to slip

2022-04-27 Thread Kathryn Anagnostakis
I don't have a stake in the LS argument because my kid chose to go to
private school but I wanted to weigh in on some of the college readiness
issues I've observed.

SAT - yes, some top colleges are swinging back to testing. Mostly that's
because when they went test optional they got WAY WAY too many applications
and did not have a system to assess those applications. Contrast that to
top schools that have been test optional for a while (Williams, UChocago)
and have systems in place, as well as staff, to assess those applications.

AP - lots of schools, including the best and top ranked private schools,
have been down playing APs for a while. Not sure it's a good idea - from
what I have seen it plays out as "we don't teach to the test" (which is
great) but then kids are still taking the test and not prepared (not
great). I think the break needs to be either more significant - "AP
classes and tests are not offered at this school" in which case not taking
APs is not counted against kids at all. OR go back to actually preparing
kids for the test. The halfway thing just doesn't work.

Weighting grades - total waste of time. Every college I know of re-weights
grades with their own system so any highschool's system of weighting
grades, and getting to brag about a kid having a 5.5, is totally ang wholly
immaterial to anything having to do with college.

College counseling in public schools is behind. This is across the board,
not just at LS. Juniors should have had a list of schools they are
interested in before spring break. It is a disservice to families to
pretend that this process starts at the end of the spring and over the
summer. Private school kids are already well down this path by this point
and have visited multiple schools. Spreading this out and giving kids a
chance to see schools in action is really important. (My guess is that
improving college counseling at LS would improve SAT scores because kids
would take the test sooner or prep better.)

Hi all - I converted my tub to a shower...and here are some suggestions to
think about: If you intend to "age in place" OR plan to sell your home in the
future which might include older people who are downsizing, consider putting in
1. a fold-down shower seat - takes up very little room.
2. a hand shower in addition to overhead.
3. no raised stoop to get into the shower. Consider sloping the floor towards
the drain for accommodating a wheel chair or transfer chair.
4. a shower door that opens wide
5. water faucets that enable the water to come on immediately to the
temperature you want instead of wasting water to get to the right temperature.
6. And most important - GRAB BAR(s)!!

Hope this helps.

Re: [LincolnTalk] LS continues to slip

2022-04-27 Thread Bryce Wells via Lincoln
Well said and agreed.

I'm waiting - as I think we all are - for Dennis to dive through the
ranking criteria and provide some insight as to why some schools are
ranking better than others. As I've said on this forum before, both of my
boys are having very good experiences at LS, but that's just our
experience.

I did go and look at SAT performance for Mass schools and our students
average a combined score of 1274. I think it's fair to use SAT scores as a
proxy for college readiness, but feel free to disagree. I know that many
schools are switching back from "test optional" because the SATs (or ACTs)
are still the best indicator of academic success freshman year. That 1274
ranks around 16th out of the districts listed (around 300) and tied or
better than Needham, Dover-Sherborn, Winchester, Maynard. But trailing
schools like Lexington (1356!), AB (1333), Wayland (1302) or
Concord-Carlisle (1286).

I've found that LS does things differently *from what I anticipated*...
there's no class rank, there's not a HUGE emphasis on AP classes, they
don't weight grades based on tougher course segments, etc... but the course
offerings are plentiful and the teachers are incredible.

*Masks now optional in the Lincoln Public Library*

The Lincoln Board of Health (BOH) voted to rescind the town-wide indoor
mask mandate effective Monday, March 14, 2022, in response to substantially
improved and positively trending public health data, including Lincoln’s
high vaccination rate.

Residents with weakened immune systems or at increased risk of severe
Covid-19 disease because of age or medical conditions, or who have a
household member at such increased risk, are advised by the Lincoln BOH and
the Commonwealth’s Department of Public Health (DPH) to continue to wear a
mask when indoors other than in their home, even if they are vaccinated.

We encourage the public to continue to wear masks in accordance with their
own comfort level and in compliance with the DPH guidelines cited above.
Private establishments may continue to *require masks upon entry.*

*Updated indoor mask use recommendation as of April 14, 2022*: “Due to
recent data showing an increase in positive COVID-19 cases, the Board of
Health members voted last night to strongly recommend that people wear
masks in public indoor spaces until early May as we see how the infection
rate from the new BA-2 variant evolves over the next few weeks after spring
vacation.”
