[newbie] Diald, kppp and Mandrake 7.2 - installation issue
Hello I am trying to install diald with Mandrake 7.2 Kppp is running ok so I know that the modem and connections are fine. I read diald Howto many times but to no avail. Could someone out there help me out? I want to run diald (I got the latest mandrake rpm file .99.1) without wrecking kppp and, if possible, taking advantage of all scripts that I have already installed under kppp. Many thanks. Eduardo

[newbie] X server is small and looks funny
Hello I am trying to install linux on P-II 300 with RIVA 128 - 4mb. The installation went fine but the x server is kind of funny. First, it doesn't fill the whole screen; it is just a small square on the middle of it. Second, the taskbar is not there. Linux can find all the parameters so I don't know what is wrong? The monitor is LG 20". Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot. Eduardo
Re: [newbie] Silly question - I don't know how to use man
Hello Thanks all for the suggestions regarding getting man to work. Here is what I tried: a) Re-installation of man softaware - It didn't work. b) Copy of somebody else's man.config to /etc/man.config. - It didn work. c) Use man as man -M /usr/man - it worked. The funniest thing about it is I don't know why man won't work. root@armagedon:/etc$ man -d Reading config file /etc/man.config found man directory /usr/man found man directory /usr/local/man found man directory /usr/X11R6/man found man directory /usr/lib/perl5/man found manpath map /bin -- /usr/man found manpath map /sbin -- /usr/man found manpath map /usr/bin -- /usr/man found manpath map /usr/sbin -- /usr/man found manpath map /usr/local/bin -- /usr/local/man found manpath map /usr/X11R6/bin -- /usr/X11R6/man found manpath map /usr/bin/X11 -- /usr/X11R6/man found manpath map /usr/bin/mh -- /usr/man it sounds good, doesn't it? Unfortunately it doesn't, root@armagedon:/etc$ man -w /usr/local/qt/man Man is stuck with qt somehow. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot. Eduardo

[newbie] Silly question - I don't know how to use man
Hello I know that this is a rather silly question but I definitely need help. For instance, I installed procmail on my system. The manuals were placed at /usr/man/man1 and /usr/man/man5 as *.1.gz or *1.bz2 and *.5.gz or *.5.bz2. When I type man procmail the sys returns no manual page for it. What am I missing here? Thanks a lot. Ed

[newbie] Mandrake on old 486 -CD not found !!!
Hello I am trying to install Mandrake-7.02 (486 iso) on a 486 PC/33 with 20MB and 2 HDs: 210 MB and 1.08 GB. It has a CD (Creative 1220 E) attached to a Sound Blaster Card 16. I created a boot disk using a cdrom.img. I tried all the modules for cdrom available (sbpc etc.) and got nothing. The cd is working pretty fine on Windows. I run out of ideas. Can you help me? Thanks a lot. Eduardo

On Wed, 24 May 2000, you wrote: during the boot up messages when you run the install disk, do you see references to the cdrom drive being found? No, but I think this is because the cdrom is attached to a sound card. I tried something simailr with on old 486 and worked. cdrom.img managed to get the cdrom as sbpc. Any ideas? Thanks Ed i just installed red hat 6.0 on a very old vlb 486 on account of mandrake being i586 optimised and i had loads of difficulty, after messing with changing master/slave options for the drive and using a different ide interface i eventually got a reference to 'hdd atapi 8x cdrom found' in the messages scolling on the screen at boot up, prior to this i had the problem with not being able to find an appropriate module and i noticed at that time that only the hard disk was being 'found' at boot up bascule mendes wrote: Hello I am trying to install Mandrake-7.02 (486 iso) on a 486 PC/33 with 20MB and 2 HDs: 210 MB and 1.08 GB. Re: [newbie] Mandrake-7.02.i486.iso ???
Hello Thanks a lot. Can I simply mount the CD with Mandrake-7.02.i486.iso on a P-133 with CD on the other side of the lab and then use it to install mandrake on the old 486? Regards Eduardo There is a way to do a net install via FTP (and maybe HTTP too). I've been tempted to try it, just to say I did, but haven't needed to. It involves making a boot disk which contains an extremely small version of linux. You boot off the disk, and then into the installer, where you input the address of some ftp site which contains Mandrake. However, finding a non ISO of the i486 install might be hard. Blashpemous as it sounds, Red Hat might be a better choice for your particular installation. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Demo/Mandrake7/install/pages/install.html Has pointers on where to start. Pedantic as it sounds, you'll probably want a fast connection. Yes, but it is not necessary to burn the ISO image. Re: [newbie] CD's + burner for audio
Hi ya Did you check www.freshmeat.net? I think there is a software called kwav2cd that does what you want. It use cdrdao. After that, get a decent graphical front-end like XCDRoast or Gcombust. That makes life a lot easier :) I know the XCDRoast - but does anybody know a program that can convert/burn wav-files to an audio-CD. I know how to make a copy of an music-CD but I am trying to make CD's out of my LP-collection. Regards Mogens Jæger

[newbie] Samba setup - some issues.

[newbie] Postfix or Sendmail?
Hello As a newbie I did worse thing possible: rm -rf /etc. As a result I have to install linux again (Have I?). The previous installation was RedHat 6.1 and now I am trying to install Mandrake 7.0. Ok, here are my questions: a) Why won't Mandrake delete all partitions when asked for? It created two new partitions /dev/hda5 and /dev/hda6 b) It seems that Mandrake is shipped with Postfix. How difficult is it to configure it? I had loads of headaches to get sendamail working. I hope postfix is different. Any suggestions to get a smooth installation? Thanks a lot. Eduardo
