Karyn,

I do not use Outlook, so my answer is anecdotal and learned from following
this mail list.

Most new Windows systems are 64-bit, not 32-bit. The SpamBayes Outlook
plugin is said to work on 64-bit systems if two conditions are met - (1)
SpamBayes is installed somewhere other than the default. It has been
recommended to use C:\SpamBayes. (2) You must be running a 32-bit version
of Outlook for the plugin to work. If neither of these are the cause of
your problem, then maybe someone else will chime in.

SpamBayes is free software, so you will not have an invoice. It is also a
community project, so there is no one to call. All support is done through
the mail list.

Good luck.

Dale

[Spambayes] Problem configuring SpamBayes IMAP Filter on Windows

2016-03-01 Thread Phil Gardner
I am using SpamBayes IMAP Filter Version 1.1b2 (March 6, 2010) (binary),
with version 2.5.2 (release25-maint, Feb 23 2008, 14:19:11) [MSC v.1310 32
bit (Intel)] of Python; my operating system is Windows 6.1.7601.2 (Service
Pack 1). I have trained 0 ham and 0 spam.

The problem I am having is: on the web configuration page, when I click on
either of the links "configure folders to filter" or "configure filters to
train" I simply get the message "No folders available". I have checked
(using Telnet) that my IMAP server login information is correct. I don't
know how to troubleshoot this. I haven't found any log files.

Best wishes,

[Spambayes] Problem with SpamBayes Proxy: Cannot configure

2013-10-28 Thread A. J.
I couldn’t find any other workable email address, though I think I checked all
your pages. Your “Send Help Message” page does not provide an email address.
Please forward if this is not the correct email address.

“I am using SpamBayes Proxy Version 1.1b2 (March 6, 2010) (binary), with

I don’t know if the above is an example or is actually my information. My
operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium and my email program is Windows Live
Mail.

This is my server information, none of which as far as I can see matches the
instructions on configuring. But maybe I’m just dumb (certainly true on
computers).

Server information:
Incoming mail server is POP3 server.
Incoming mail (POP3): inbound.att.net
Outgoing mail (SMTP): outbound.att.net

Port number:
Incoming mail (POP3): 995

On the Configuration Page
for Remote Servers, I have used “pop3.inbound.att.net:995”, “inbound.att.net”,
“localhost”, possibly others.
for SpamBayes Ports, I have used 995, 110, 8110, 8880

On any of these combinations, when I click on Save, this is what I see on
http://localhost:8880/home:

The website cannot display the page HTTP 500

When I click on Review Messages from the icon, below is what I see on

Re: [Spambayes] Problem with SpamBayes Proxy: Cannot configure

2013-10-28 Thread Dale Schroeder

A.J.,

Based on what you have provided, it appears that the following values
should be used in the web config page:

Remote Servers: *inbound.att.net:995* (att uses yahoo mail servers)
SpamBayes Ports: *8110* (although this could be any unused port)

Then, you would configure Windows Live Mail's pop3 server setting to use
localhost (or 127.0.0.1) for the server on port 8110 (or the port you
chose above). Create filters to sort the mail classified by spambayes.
Security/Encryption settings (ssl, tls, etc.) would remain as you
currently have them.

Additionally, everything I have read on this list suggests that on
Windows 7, spambayes should _not_ be installed in Program Files. Many
suggest C:\spambayes instead.

HTH,
Dale

Re: [Spambayes] Problem with SpamBayes Proxy: Cannot configure

2013-10-28 Thread Dale Schroeder
The failure would be because SpamBayes is not functioning. Until it is,
you will need to revert the Windows Mail config as it was before. Once
you get spambayes working, then make the client changes.
My spambayes server is on a remote host, so an outbound firewall rule
for tcp port 8880 was required; however, I have assumed you are running
spambayes on the same system as Windows Live, so that should not be an
issue.
I'll do my best to guide you in the error messages you've listed below.
Truthfully, it looks like some of the defaults were not set during the
install; or perhaps, a default bayescustomize.ini file was not created
for you.

Dale,
I really appreciate your prompt response.
I made the changes you suggested (yellow highlight below).
But when I click on Save, I still see this message on

The website cannot display the page HTTP 500
When I click on “Refresh the page”, this is what I get:

# 'None' is not a value valid for [SMTP Proxy Options] Train as spam

# 'None' is not a value valid for [SMTP Proxy Options] Lookup message in
cache. Valid values are: False,True

These options should be on the main config page. The section in
brackets identifies the configuration section on the web page and is
located immediately below the pop3 proxy options.
The 1st two can be blank, but the word none is not allowed. The third
has only 2 options, as indicated in the error message. I believe the
default is false.

# 'None' is not a value valid for [Storage Options] Suppress caching of

# 'None' is not a value valid for [Storage Options] Maximum size of

Storage Options is the 2nd to last section on the main config page.
The 1st 2 options are the full paths of where you would like to store
your mail databases (including the database file name). A good place
would be the directory where your bayescustomize.ini file is located.

3rd value, I use true.
4th value, I use false
5th value, I use 100

#

# 'None' is not a value valid for [Statistics Options] Ham cutoff
# 'None' is not a value valid for [Statistics Options] Spam cutoff

These should be located at the bottom of the main config page. I am
currently using 0.6 for spam and 0.5 for ham.
If you cannot see these options on the web config page, then I surmise
that your installation is corrupt, and you will need to reinstall.

You could also edit the bayescustomize.ini file manually. Below is my
sanitized ini file, but note that some of these options are from the
advanced and experimental config pages and are not require for a working
spambayes.

Hello,

I have been running SpamBays for many years and love the product.

A problem has developed in the last week where I load Outlook 2010, SpamBays
works for a while and then quits working.

There is no error message it simply stops filtering and the spam button does
nothing.

I have tried un-installing the product and re-installing with no luck, I
have also tried installing to the C:\SpamBayes direction

And nothing seems to help.

What should I do to try and get it operational again?

The proxy will neither delete email nor leave it there - all it does

Re: [Spambayes] Problem with SpamBayes Proxy: Mild

2012-03-07 Thread Dale Schroeder

Peter,

SpamBayes doesn't do anything like that. It only categorizes email
based on the training you give it. It places that categorization in
either a header or on the subject line of the mail, depending upon how
you have it configured. As it does not have these capabilities, your
problem has to derive from the mail client or something else.

In Thunderbird, check under Tools == Account Settings == Server Settings.
Look for Leave messages on server. If the box is checked, uncheck it,
and you should no longer have a backlog at the ISP.

If it is already unchecked, you will have to look for something else
that may be causing the problem.

You use Outlook Express. You do not have a task bar.

Actually, he doesn't have spambayes in an Outlook *toolbar*, but possibly

I don't see any clues in your log file (all lines look normal). I think
you'll have to provide more data before anybody can speculate about a cause
for the server error.

Re: [Spambayes] Problem with SpamBayes

2008-02-07 Thread Joel Rosenthal
I think SpamBayes works inconsistently with Outlook 2007. It worked
perfectly for me when I upgraded from Outlook 2003, and when I had to
reinstall my system on a new hard drive it worked perfectly there. But then
I had to reinstall the system again, and it hasn't worked since. I had the
problem with Outlook crashing, but most of the time I could use the Spam and
Not Spam buttons, but no matter what I did, SpamBayes simply would do no
filtering on its own. I disabled and reenabled filtering. I trained it
manually and on the fly. I uninstalled and reinstalled. It kept track of the
training I was doing, but when it came to automatic filtering, it just sat
there. For months, actually. I asked the list for help several times but
didn't receive a single response. So I finally gave up, which was a shame,
because when it worked, it was the best spam-defeating system I'd
encountered, certainly better than the badly designed Outlook Junk E-mail
Filter I'm using now.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your reply. I uninstalled the previous version through the
control panel and made sure to download the installer version (.exe)
this time. It still doesn't work.

The problem I think is that Spambayes was never correctly installed in
the first place. When it was first installed, the spambayes tool bar
appeared in outlook along with the junk mail and junk suspects folders
but there was no automatic automatically filtering of emails as usually
happens. The buttons on the spambayes toolbar, while they appear in
Outlook, are not activated. The 'Delete as spam' button is disabled and
the Spambayes drop-down list does not appear.

I've tried to uninstall and reinstall spambayes several times but with
no success. It seems that the original add-in (that doesn't work
properly) is now 'stuck' in Outlook-it does not uninstall when I
uninstall the spambayes program from the computer.

Does this make any sense?

Thanks,
Karen

You didn't need to install Python*. Python is only necessary when
building from the source code. You should have downloaded and installed

the installer version (.exe). Try it again and make sure that Outlook

something weird is happening.

* You probably installed Python as a result of Spambayes not appearing

Karen, I suggest that you look in Outlook for a junk mail folder that was
created by Outlook instead of Spambayes. If you find one, delete it. Then
when you click Delete as Spam (mine says simply Spam, the deletion
should work. But also, if your experience is like mine, SpamBayes won't do
anything on its own. But you'll be one step ahead of where you were before.

Hi There

I am trying to get spambayes working for Outlook Express 6.

I performed the installation once using the OE option and not the Outlook
Addin option.
Every appeared to install fine and the sb tray icon appeared
I configured the server, but it didn't work..i know I didn't set it correctly
as i missed a few fields.

Anyway, so i stopped the server and exited

After that, i could no longer start the sb-tray icon

AFter much mucking around, I removed and reinstalled spambayes, however no
matter what I try, i still cannot get the tray icon to appear. I have done the
uninsall and manually removed reg entries with no luck

I have even tried manually creating the sb_service service using the -install
option and that doesn't work. I get the following error.

[Spambayes] Problem configuring Spambayes with Outlook 2003

2006-07-13 Thread Stephen Billard
I recently upgraded from Outlook XP to Outlook 2003. I have done this on
three computers. On one, I have run into a problem with SpamBayes.

On this computer, I cannot get SpamBayes to stick. That is, the SpamBayes
toolbar option is not present in the customize for the toolbars. When I go
to tools/options-Other/advanced-Com Addins, SpamBayes it there unchecked. I
can check it, but when I exit the dialog and return, it is unchecked.

Any thoughts? I've uninstalled and reinstalled both SpamBayes and Outlook to
no avail.

Hell Tony, I don't want to annoy the sh*t out of you - I know
what your position is with respect to studies etc.

I'm hoping for something between pestering and annoying wink. It
does give me an idea of how much demand there is for it, and keeps it
at the end of my inbox where it's most likely to be noticed...

I do hope that a 1.1a3, 1.1b1, and 1.1 final will follow without too
much delay. I have a bit more time coming up (for a while at least),
and some more time to work on SpamBayes, so it seems likely.

... held up 1.1a2 by a year or so. However, it is
now actually on its way (see previous message).

I'm excited!!! Is this a long process?

Not normally. This time is slightly more complicated, mostly as a
result of not having done one for so long. Really the only thing
holding it up is that the binary (the Outlook plug-in part of it)
needs to be build with Outlook 2000 (not 2002 or 2003), otherwise it
won't work for Outlook 2000 users. But I no longer have access to an
Outlook 2000 install...so I put out a call (on spambayes-dev) today
asking for help with this - I expect something will turn up in a day
or two.

Also, how do you normally announce when a new version has been
made available for download? I need it as soon as it hits the
 shelves.

An announcement is mailed to spambayes@python.org, spambayes-
[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], sourceforge sends
an email to anyone monitoring the spambayes package, and I update
the website.

It's there in some closed bug (it's been fixed in CVS for ages).
Basically the messageinfo db was being reopened for every message,
which really screwed things up.

I'm in the process of doing a 1.1a2. Things aren't perfect
(especially imapfilter), but, hey, it's an alpha, and it's better
than 1.1a1. If you look in the right place, you can already find the
source distributions online (I need to get hold of my gpg key for

Bill Hely wrote:

TONY MEYER SAID:

Installed

1.1a1 per your FAQ 4.21 setup for Outlook Express.

No! The POP3 proxy (what you use for Outlook Express

SpamBayes)

does not work with 1.1a1. Stick with 1.0.4, which definitely
does work.

But doesn't this just bring us back to the problem with 1.0.4
that any TO addresses with spam in the domain name (and I have
one) will be classified as spam regardless? We've already
discussed the related problems with 1.0.4 as far as the
ubiquitous Outlook Express is concerned.

1.0.4 has an insurmountable problem in that respect; 1.1a1 has
(in your words) a serious pop3proxy bug (you didn't say what)
and, believe me Tony, it is quite inconceivable that any average
user is even going to attempt the CVS route.

So where to?

The reason I started writing simplified instructions for
SpamBayes was because I was recommending it to all and sundry and
then getting a flood of what the bloody hell does this mean
with regard to comments and instructions throughout
SpamBayes.org.

I have a complete end-user-friendly coverage of spam management
in general and SpamBayes in particular ready to go, except for
the fact I cannot find a satisfactory solution to the
non-Outlook-for-average-users scenario. Average users will not
install Python, pywin32, a CVS client and checkout the SpamBayes
source. It is beyond them.

I'm trying to contribute to the cause, but I seem to have hit a
brick wall with the case of other-than-Outlook clients.

Hopefully I'm just missing something obvious, in which case I'll
be delighted to accept an ass-whoppin' in return for the
solution.

What is the serious pop3proxy bug? Is it in the bug reports?

Dunno. From an exchange on March 27...

---
Bill H. OK, I've picked up on Tony's suggestion and installed
proxy version 1.1a1 for Outlook Express.

Tony M.I hope you meant the version in CVS (it should report
itself as 1.1a1 + IIRC). 1.1a1 has a serious pop3proxy bug.

On that note I experimented with it no further.

Re: [Spambayes] Problem with SpamBayes POP3 Proxy: [PROBLEM SUMMARY]

2006-04-16 Thread Bill Hely

TONY MEYER SAID:
Uninstalled SB 1.0.4 which I could not get to work.

 [...]

This means that the database is corrupted (there is a token that has
been seen in more spam than you have trained). The best thing to do
is to retrain from scratch.

This shouldn't occur - you should check that procmail is accessing
spambayes correctly; I don't really know much about that, but there
are examples in the distribution and on the website, that you could
look at.

stopped working in spambayes. It would no]download my email.
I changed the Outlook Express server property from [localhost]

if I change back to [localhost] it won't work.

Please get hold of your most recent log file and send us a copy of this; it
should have the information we need to figure out what is wrong. The log
files are in your temp directory; in WinXP this is probably 'C:\Documents
and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Temp' and the files are called
SpambayesServerX.log, where X is a number from 1 (most recent) to 4.

The troubleshooting guide has more detailed information about finding the

Perhaps it's not always referring to the same database? Is $HOME the same

RE: [Spambayes] Problem with Spambayes IMAP and Microsoft Exchange...

2005-04-21 Thread Tony Meyer
I've been using SB for a while with a Mirapoint IMAP server
and it works just fine. I made minor tweaks to the sb_imapfilter.py
script to have a Ham folder in addition to the Spam and Unsure
 folders,

Your patch for this is in 1.1a1, BTW.

to only train if login is successful, and to keep trying to log in at the
defined interval, when a login fails (in case there are
transient issues with accessing the server).

I believe 1.1a1 ought to do this as well.

However, I'm trying to switch to Microsoft Exchange server using IMAP
and I'm having problems. I changed the ini file to point to the new
server name, I have the folders set up on the server, but, when I run
imapfilter.py, I see the following message (after the
 password is obtained):
[...]
 Invalid response to select Inbox.Bayesian.MarkAsHam:
('NO', ['The requested item could not be found.'])

It sounds like you left the folder names in the ini file the same and just
created matching folders on the new server - is that right? If so, the
problem might be that the Exchange server uses a different delimiter than
the '.' that it appears the Mirapoint server uses.

If you open up the web interface and look at the folder list (for training
or filtering), do the folder names appear like Inbox.Bayesian.MarkAsHam?
They might be something like Inbox/Bayesian/MarkAsHam, instead, which
would be an easy fix.

[Spambayes] Problem with Spambayes IMAP and Microsoft Exchange...

2005-04-20 Thread Paul Michali
Hi all,
I've been using SB for a while with a Mirapoint IMAP server and it works
just fine. I made minor tweaks to the sb_imapfilter.py script to have a
Ham folder in addition to the Spam and Unsure folders, to only
train if login is successful, and to keep trying to log in at the
defined interval, when a login fails (in case there are transient issues
with accessing the server).

However, I'm trying to switch to Microsoft Exchange server using IMAP
and I'm having problems. I changed the ini file to point to the new
server name, I have the folders set up on the server, but, when I run
imapfilter.py, I see the following message (after the password is obtained):

sb_imapfilter2.py -v -c -t -l 1 -p hammie.db -P
SpamBayes IMAP Filter Version 0.4 (May 2004)
and engine SpamBayes Engine Version 0.3 (January 2004).
Loading state from hammie.db pickle
hammie.db is an existing pickle, with 440 ham and 3617 spam
Loading database hammie.db... Done.
Password:

Invalid response to select Inbox.Bayesian.MarkAsHam:
('NO', ['The requested item could not be found.'])
I'm running this on a Sun box. I did add a Bayesian folder and a
MarkAsHam folder in the Bayesian folder on the mail server.

Any suggestions?
