[Touch-packages] [Bug 2058647] [NEW] GNOME OAuth2 Handler desktop entry not hidden

2024-03-21 Thread AsciiWolf
Public bug reported:

The GNOME OAuth2 Handler desktop entry should be hidden (it is not an
user app and clicking it does nothing), but is displayed in Shell
Overview on latest Ubuntu 24.04. This is because the "X-Ubuntu-Gettext-
Domain" line that is incorrectly added to the file without a newline
character:

$ cat org.gnome.OnlineAccounts.OAuth2.desktop

[Touch-packages] [Bug 878118] Re: please merge po files to upstream? source

2023-06-27 Thread AsciiWolf
I have noticed that this is still a problem in latest Debian. The
"Software & Updates" GTK application has most of its strings
untranslated in Debian in our (Czech) language although it is fully
translated in Ubuntu.[1] When looking at the Debian bug tracker, it
looks like that many other language translations have the same problem.

When looking at the software-properties po files[2] at Debian Salsa
GitLab, it looks like that they were never updated, only the pot
template was.

I have tried contacting Ubuntu and Debian developers of software-
properties, but did not get any reply from them, so I have at least
reported it as a Debian issue here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1035019

I am not sure how translations of this component are handled in Debian,
but please consider syncing them from Ubuntu.

It's possible that some apps (like games) might regress on some hw,

It seems to happen only one time on a clean, fully updated installation

 - On flavors it should open whatever their default app for handling debs is

  [Regression Potential]

   * For Ubuntu, very low, rarely would a user expect to open a deb with

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1866841] Re: [SRU] Move gnome-shell-extension-prefs to universe and add chrome-gnome-shell to its recommends

2020-04-17 Thread AsciiWolf
Jeremy, I have changed this bug name and description to a SRU. Is there
anything else needed to do from my side? Should I subscribe ~ubuntu-sru
to this bug?

** Summary changed:

- Move gnome-shell-extension-prefs to universe and add chrome-gnome-shell to

+ [SRU] Move gnome-shell-extension-prefs to universe and add chrome-gnome-shell
to its recommends

** Description changed:

- Please, consider adding the chrome-gnome-shell package as a recommended
- dependency for ubuntu-desktop package in Ubuntu 20.04. The chrome-gnome-
- shell package provides GNOME Shell integration (connector) for Firefox,
- Chrome, Chromium and other web browsers that is necessary for users to
- be able to manage GNOME Shell extensions using a extensions.gnome.org
- website. Since the Shell Extensions support was removed from gnome-
- software since 3.36 and the replacement Extensions application cannot be
- used to find and install new extensions, there is not any user friendly
- way to install new Shell Extensions without having the chrome-gnome-
- shell package installed.
+ [Impact]

- More information:
+ * Since GNOME 3.36, Shell Extensions can no longer be installed using
+ GNOME Software (Ubuntu Software), instead there was a new Extensions
+ (gnome-shell-extension-prefs) application prepared to replace this
+ functionality. However, this application itself does not support
+ installing new extensions, instead, it opens a web browser with a
+ extensions.gnome.org website that allows browsing and installing new
+ extensions. This website depends on a chrome-gnome-shell package that
+ provides GNOME Shell integration (connector) for Firefox, Chrome,
+ Chromium and other web browsers for this functionality. Without this
+ connector, it is not possible to install Shell Extensions on Ubuntu

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1866841] Re: Add chrome-gnome-shell to ubuntu-desktop recommends

2020-04-16 Thread AsciiWolf
Support for Shell Extensions was removed from GNOME Software since 3.36
(because it was problematic and hard to maintain). I just checked it in
the latest stable Snap Store app and was not able to find any support
for Shell Extensions there.

So, I see three possible solutions for this issue:

1. Add downstream support for Shell Extensions to GNOME Software / Snap Store
on Ubuntu. (That would bring too much work and possible issues, at least in my
opinion.)
2. Add AppStream metadata file to the chrome-gnome-shell package that would
display the package as Add-on for something (Firefox?) in Snap Store.
3. If a package from main cannot depend on a package from universe, move
gnome-shell-extension-prefs to universe and add chrome-gnome-shell to its
dependencies. (That would be the best solution in my opinion.)

Or did you mean adding the chrome-gnome-shell as a dependency for GNOME
Extensions after this app is moved to a separate package (as noted in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1866841] Re: Add chrome-gnome-shell to ubuntu-desktop recommends

2020-03-24 Thread AsciiWolf
Martin, the new Extensions manager does not support installing new
extensions. It just contains instructions for users to open the
extensions.gnome.org page in their web browser. The functionality to
browse/install extensions via Extensions manager will be added in future
GNOME releases, but it is highly unlikely it will happen in 3.36.
Please, reconsider this. Not adding chrome-gnome-shell to the default
install in Ubuntu 20.04 will basically make it impossible for (non-
expert) users to install new GNOME Shell extensions.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1727470] Re: [RFE] Automatically update the Ubuntu version strings in python-apt

I see that the version strings are hardcoded in
data/templates/Ubuntu.info.in, for example for Ubuntu 19.10:

_Description: Ubuntu 19.10 'Eoan Ermine'

_Description: Cdrom with Ubuntu 19.10 'Eoan Ermine'

Not sure if my suggested solution from #2 could be applied on the .in
file, but it would be great if this issue could be finally fixed. It is
really annoying for translators to update these strings manually every
time a new Ubuntu release is out.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1727470] Re: [RFE] Automatically update the Ubuntu version strings in python-apt

2019-04-20 Thread AsciiWolf
I didn't have time to look into the source code, but the problem is that
instead of having something like "Cdrom with %s", there is a new
translatable string with hardcoded version added every time a python-apt
is released for a new Ubuntu version. You could probably make the
"Ubuntu xx.yy 'Code Name'" string not translatable (I don't think anyone
actually translates this) and use it as a part of the "Cdrom with ..."
string.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1552792] Re: gnome software leaves dependencies installed

2018-02-09 Thread AsciiWolf
More information from Julian Klode
(https://github.com/hughsie/PackageKit/issues/201#issuecomment-364363222):

"Sure, it's an option given to backends, see
pk_backend_remove_packages() - it's a parameter in the Dbus API's
RemovePackages() method. In the client API, you can specify it as a
boolean parameter for pk_client_remove_packages_async.

But it's not the kind of autoremove that would be correct for gnome-
software - gnome-software needs to remove "new garbage", that is only
packages that become unused as a result of the removal and not any other
unrelated garbage that has accumulated over time."

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1552792] Re: gnome software leaves dependencies installed

2018-02-08 Thread AsciiWolf
The aptcc PackageKit backend developer told me that autoremove is
already supported for more than 5 years, since this commit from 2012:
https://github.com/hughsie/PackageKit/commit/94a5e71ded685720e49f17dc6ee21716b33ac177

But it still does not work when using pkcon or GNOME Software. Maybe it
is not enabled by default?

Bug description:
  [ Description ]

In GNOME's activities overview, search entries from gnome-control-
  center aren't translated.

  [ Fix ]

setlocale() wasn't being called until after the model that supplies
search results was constructed. We fix the initialisation code to run
slightly later, after setlocale() has been called.

  [ QA ]

  1. Open a session in a non-English locale which has gnome-control-center
translations (French works).
  2. Hit super and type an "a"
  3. There should be some results from "Settings". They should be in French (or
whatever language you're using).

  [ Regression potential ]

If we misunderstood when the initialisation phases in GtkApplication
ran then there could be a race condition. You'd see that manifesting
as either a crash in the search provider or no results being returned.
Make sure there aren't crahes reported in errors.u.c.

  [ Original description ]

  Hey,

I'm referring to this issue on AskUbuntu:
  http://askubuntu.com/questions/600656/change-language-of-the-gnome-
  shell-overview

On my Ubuntu Gnome 15.04 system all entries from the gnome-control-
center are shown in English in the Gnome-Shell overview (see
screenshot in the above mentioned link), even though my system
language is German. The entries in the gnome-control-center itself are
  however in German.

Is this due to a bug or missing translations?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1491787] Re: Gnome's Activities Overview search is always in English, regardless of the system language

2017-12-06 Thread AsciiWolf
Piotr Drąg's comment from the upstream bug report: It works in every
distribution except Ubuntu, which doesn’t put translations directly in
.desktop files (what it does instead, I do not know). So either this is
an upstream bug and g-c-c’s search provider needs to deal with Ubuntu’s
special case, or a downstream bug and Ubuntu needs to start using
standard .desktop files like everyone else.

  shell-overview

On my Ubuntu Gnome 15.04 system all entries from the gnome-control-
center are shown in English in the Gnome-Shell overview (see
screenshot in the above mentioned link), even though my system
language is German. The entries in the gnome-control-center itself are
  however in German.

Is this due to a bug or missing translations?

session is no longer available.

  Disable Guest Access by default.

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:

Status in unity-control-center package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
"Guest Access" should be disabled by default. It is an unexpected
"feature", on an otherwise secure system. Until a GUI option is added
  (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-
center/+bug/886415), it is also an un-intuitive feature to disable.

I've found it only invites trouble. For me, trouble had the face of my
children while I was at work. =) They found that they were able to use
  my laptop, without logging in.

Then on their PC they found that, while logged into their account,
using the "Guest Access" bypassed the proxy settings setup in their
  Firefox profile.

Please consider defaulting both pre-logon and post-logon Guest Access
  to off.
