[Touch-packages] [Bug 1972790] Re: Can't connect to hotspot created on ubuntu

Also affected. Downgrading to 2.9 worked.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1972790

Title:
Can't connect to hotspot created on ubuntu

Status in wpa package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
We currently have older systems (18.04) with hotspot's and we will migrate to
22.04.
Anything work's fine, expect the hotspot.
The Hotspot will be created and is visible in the WLAN-List, but if the
security is set to "WPA & WPA2 Personal" we get the error message "Failed to
connect to the network".
If we change the Security to "WPA3 Personal" we get the error message
"Invalid Password", even if the password is correct.
As soon we remove the security (change it to "none"), we can connect with out
any problems.

We can reproduce it with a fresh installtion of the Ubuntu Server
22.04 and the following two commands:

  apt install network-manager

nmcli c add type wifi ifname wlp3s0 con-name Hotspot autoconnect yes
  ssid test-ap 802-11-wireless.mode ap 802-11-wireless.band bg
  802-11-wireless.mac-address "80:45:dd:f0:27:ba" wifi-sec.group ccmp
  wifi-sec.key-mgmt wpa-psk wifi-sec.pairwise ccmp wifi-sec.proto rsn
  wifi-sec.psk "test12345" ipv4.addresses 192.168.60.1/24 ipv4.method
shared && nmcli connection up Hotspot

We thought it could be similar to this issue:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wpa/+bug/1958267
Because if we test it with 20.04 it worked fine, because 20.04 uses the
Version 2:2.9.0-21build1 as described in the Ticket.

Bug#1006009: fixed in libwebp 1.2.2-1

2022-03-13 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Yes, I made a mistake with respect to 1.2.2. Upstream's official patch is
here. I am going to attempt a high urgency upload during the next houw with
1.2.2 + this patch. If that fails for any reason, NMU welcome without
delay.

To make it super clear, here is the updated formal request with updated Ben
file.

===

Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: transition

Hello Release Team,

We would like to transition libwebp to a new upstream version 1.2.1-6
that is already uploaded and built in experimental. No build problems
are expected in the reverse dependencies either. This was tested by
rebuilding a subset of packages listed on the transition web page:

https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/auto-libwebp.html

Please let us know if we can proceed with the upload to unstable. Also
a binNMU rebuild of reverse dependencies would be required afterwards.

looking for new package maintainer, libwebp

2022-01-01 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
I am looking for a new maintainer for the Debian package libwebp.
It's a great package, widely used, with a terrific upstream.

The current version in Debian is several years old. I have just uploaded
a new release to Experimental; there was a soname bump so I suspect
it will be in the NEW queue for a while.

I am hoping a kind soul (or team) can take over the package, including
the transition process.

Re: [Pkg-phototools-devel] upcoming transition for webp package

2021-08-23 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Hi all,

Perhaps now is a good time to attempt a webp transition? As such I've just
uploaded version 1.2.1
to experimental, and will start following the transition documentation.
Please let me know if you
have any concerns or questions.

Bug#914315: libwebp-dev: New versions fix disclosed heap use-after-free

2021-08-07 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Maintainer is "less active" but still in good contact with upstream. I was
going to package the latest version several months ago, but there was a
soname bump and transitions were not allowed due to Debian's release cycle.
Happy to work with anyone on updating webp.

Bug#949638: tesseract: uses -march=native

2020-01-24 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
BCC: Stefan Weil since I don't know if he wants his email posted in
bugs.debian.org

Regarding: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=949638

Thank you, Peter.

1. The URL for the patch is 404.

2. There may be some subtlety with -march=native, specifically related to
detection of SIMD instructions like AVX2. There's been an enormous
amount of back & forth on this topic in upstream over the years, so I'd like
to take this bug there and let them weigh in.

[Bug 1720717] Re: Add multiarch metadata to tessaract lib/dev

2019-10-03 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Hi Derek,

I'm not totally up to speed on the Multi-Arch thing. Is this just changing
a field in the control file? What's the benefit? Any downside?

I saw a similar bug on Debian's bugtracker, that didn't make sense to me.
Happy to be educated.

Bug#913951: tesseract-ocr: Legacy engine not directly usable because of missing files

2018-12-03 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Hi Janusz,

Tesseract 4 uses tesseract-ocr-deu and tesseract-ocr-script-frak.
Tesseract 3 uses tesseract-ocr-deu-frak

I am worried about confusing users. If we include both sets of language
data in Debian, there will a huge number of choices, and some users
might feel overwhelmed. However, Alexander thinks it could work with
careful
package naming, like this:

  https://mentors.debian.net/package/tesseract-lang-legacy

I am also a little worried about the support costs of exposing lots of
users
to the legacy engine. It will make it harder to remove the legacy engine
completely from future Tesseract. Especially if other Debian packages
start to have dependencies on it. Also bug reports against the legacy engine
will not get much attention from upstream.

We'll discuss this with upstream, but in the meantime I have a question for
you: What is your best guess for how many people are like you, and want to
use the Tesseract 3 engine in Debian?

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: [tesseract-ocr] How to overlay hocr output on original scanned pdf.

2018-09-17 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Tesseract produces searchable PDF directly. If you really want to use HOCR
as an
intermediate format, you can but you will need external software. There are
a couple
of "hocr2pdf" programs floating around and "OCRMyPDF" does an admirable
job
tying things together. That said, going direct should give best results.

[Gossip] The Mail Archive transitioning away from a small business

2018-09-03 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Dear Friends,

The Mail Archive has been running for 20 years. It started
as hobby and grew into a small business 14 years ago.
We have now come full circle. The business will end on
December 31, 2018 and the service will revert to a hobby.

What happened? Well, traffic has steadily declined for many
years and with that so does revenue. It's finally reached
the point where it no longer makes financial sense to pay
the overhead of running a small business, even a super lean
one like The Mail Archive.

So what does this mean? For the rest of 2018, nothing at all.
In 2019 we switch to my personal hobby and see how that
goes. The financial costs of running the service are not that
big of a concern. However, I am a little worried about being
back on the front line of customer service. That stuff is no fun
and is probably the biggest risk to The Mail Archive's ultimate
lifespan.

I would like to deeply thank my business partners Jeff & Tom
who have done great things over the years. And also to the many
other helpers, you know who you are. It's been a wild ride and
I'm proud to have helped some people along the way.

Cheers,
Jeff

Bug#904433: tesseract-ocr: please mark as Multi-Arch: foreign

2018-08-27 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
> tesseract-ocr package provides arch-independent service (cli)

The command line interface (cli) application 'tesseract' in the
tesseract-ocr package is written in C++. It is not architecture
independent. Therefore I don't think it should be marked as
Multi-Arch: foreign.

No idea. I halted my efforts once I got PyLucene 4.10.1 working with
openjdk-8-jdk.

Re: pylucene on Ubuntu 18.04

2018-05-29 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
I'd previously been using 4.9.0. Making a huge jump in release numbers is
scary. Will it invalidate existing indexes? Has the Lucene API changed a
lot?
Will I be forced to migrate to python 3? That said, I was desperate and
tried
all the official releases (4.10.1, 6.2.0, 6.4.1, 6.5.0). It just so
happened that
4.10.1 was the first thing I got to work.

Here are things I ran into. Just mentioning them, not asking for changes.

The distribution packages for python-lucene is totally busted.
I made the original package, someone else updated it in 2013,
but it was all built against openjdk-7-jdk which is long gone.

I think python-setuptools that ship with Ubuntu 18.04 do not include
shared support. The jcc/patches no longer apply. I ended up hacking
the heck out of it (including copying files from older versions of Ubuntu)
to add shared support.

I think had some trouble with conflicting JVMs and really only got things
working after removing all but one from the system.

I got confused by python setup.py build; I kept modifying setup.py and
trying to rebuild, but didn't notice it didn't actually rebuild. Ended up
doing
a lot of rm -rf once I realized this.

There are a lot of if statements in jcc/setup.py that try to reason about
shared support. I often got confused what it thought. Ended up removing
all the ifs and locking everything to shared.

Due to sleepiness, for a while I mistakenly thought this line was a
typo in the Makefile and was supposed to be two separate lines.
ANT=JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle /usr/bin/ant

It looks like libjava.so and libjvm.so in openjdk-11-jdk are in different
directories compared to openjdk-8-jdk.

Re: pylucene on Ubuntu 18.04

2018-05-29 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Hi Andi,

I am happy to report that I just got 4.10.1 working, using some
extreme measures. Whew. Will give a clearer report after getting
some sleep.

Jeff

Re: pylucene on Ubuntu 18.04

2018-05-28 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
And for what it is worth, python-setuptools claims to be version 39.0.1.
I've
probably spent about 10 to 12 hours trying to get something to work. It is
not clear to me if it needs patching to not.

Re: pylucene on Ubuntu 18.04

2018-05-28 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
To be a little more specific, here's what happens with version 4.9.0
which I've had good luck with in the past. The system contains the
following shared libraries.

/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/lib/amd64/libjava.so

It looks like LFLAGS in jcc/setup.py should find them. I'm on the
linux2/X86_64 platform, using '/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64'
for the JDK. JCC builds and installs without complaint, but fails at
runtime.

 Traceback (most recent call last):

pylucene on Ubuntu 18.04

2018-05-28 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
I'm having all sorts of trouble getting PyLucene to run on Ubuntu 18.04,
which has openjdk-8, openjdk-11, python 2.7.15. Has anyone had success,
and if so, with which version of pylucene?

Thanks,

I've tried and can't figure out how to make this package either build
at the current release, or update to latest release. This is one last

Bug#898439: leptonlib: CVE-2018-7442

2018-05-11 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Believed fixed in Debian package 1.76.0-1

Status of various vulnerabilities, as per upstream:

* CVE-2018-7442: potential injection attack because '/' is allowed
  in gplot rootdir.
Functions using this command have been disabled by default in the
distribution, starting with 1.76.0. As for the specific issue, it
is impossible to specify a general path without using the standard
  directory subdivider '/'.
* CVE-2018-7186: number of characters not limited in fscanf or
sscanf,
allowing possible attack with buffer overflow.
This has been fixed in 1.75.3.
* CVE-2018-3836: command injection vulnerability in
gplotMakeOutput().
This has been fixed in 1.75.3, using stringCheckForChars() to
block
  rootnames containing any of: ;&|>"?*$()/<
* CVE-2017-18196: duplicated path components.
  This was fixed in 1.75.3.
* CVE-2018-7441: hardcoded /tmp pathnames.
These are all wrapped in special debug functions that are not
enabled by default in the distribution, starting with 1.76.0.
* CVE-2018-7247: input 'rootname' can overflow a buffer.
This was fixed in 1.76.0, using snprintf().
* CVE-2018-7440: command injection in gplotMakeOutput using
$(command).
Fixed in 1.75.3, which blocks '$' as well as 11 other characters.

Bug#849094: liblept5: Broken on s390x (+ other big endian archs)

2018-05-04 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Tesseract in Debian just added a build time smoke test AND Stefan fixed
the big-endian
problem. Should be live tomorrow in Sid. Assuming that works well, Graham
should be
able to re-activate the disabled OCRMyPDF tests. Note that this is Debian
only; Ubuntu
18.04 is out the door so no longer pertinent.

I'd love to actually update to the most recent upstream. The build system
switched
from ant to maven, and I am completely unfamiliar with it. First, I got a
fatal error
about not finding org.sonatype.oss:oss-parent:pom, so I tried deleting that
section
of the pom.xml. Then the build can't find jacoco-mavin-plugin is missing.
That's
where I'm currently stuck.

request for help: jhove

2018-04-30 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
I'm the Debian package maintainer for jhove, which is an image validator
and really useful for libraries and other cultural heritage institutions.

It is about to get kicked out due to bug #895761. The right thing to do is
update the jhove to the current upstream version. However, I haven't touched
Java packaging for a very long time, and since then the world has changed.
My first attempt went nowhere.

Is someone willing to help out? I'm appreciative of assistance at any
level: advice, patches, NMU, package adoption. Thank you in advance.

Bug#849094: liblept5: Broken on s390x (+ other big endian archs)

2018-04-24 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Given the date, it sounds like we have an emergency situation.

I'm really stuck here. My only known access to a big endian is an emulator
with Wheezy.

   http://create.stephan-brumme.com/big-endian/

That's good enough for checking suspicious parts of Leptonica. I tried and
found nothing. But it is not good enough to check Tesseract 4.0.

Your OCRMyPdf s390 test provides strong evidence that Tesseract
is broken on big endian.

http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/o/ocrmypdf/bionic/s390x

However, if I wipe out that package on big-endian, it will cause a
cascading
dependency failure affecting hundreds of other packages. Not great to do
36 hours before release.

Recommend we talk in real time. Will send you contact details by private
email.

Bug#895761: jhove: FTBFS with java 9

2018-04-23 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
I think the right thing is to update to the latest jhove release (1.20) but
looks like the build system has changed dramatically. Would love to get a
little help from someone who works with Java packages on a more regular
basis.

Is it sufficient to put Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 11.0.0) in
debian/control and 11 in debian/compat ?

Re: upload leptonlib

2018-02-26 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
>Was upstream's position also to remove those binaries?

Yes.

>Upstream was unable to provide a patch?

Yes. Upstream decided that it was not worth the time to make a patch.

Leptonica is a large image processing library. It also contains source code
for many (over 200) example programs that use the library. From these
example
programs, a small number (about 10) are built and ship as part of the
leptonica-progs
binary package.

Bug #830660 noticed that some of these programs were insecure. The affected
programs were not very important, and my best guess is nobody uses them. So
after discussion with upstream, I removed them from the Debian package.
Because
the programs are probably not used, I don't have a strong opinion about
what
happens with Wheezy.

Does this help?

Re: upload leptonlib

2018-02-23 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
>So these files should be also removed from the package in wheezy and
jessie?

Yes.

Bug#885704: liblept5 negatively plays with paths in /tmp when opening TIFFs

2018-02-22 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
This is the patch I used for Leptonica 1.74. It should work fine for
earlier versions.
Upstream used a different approach for addressing the problem in version
1.75.

The remaining hardcoded /tmp filenames are believed to be in test and debug
code paths.

Bug#849094: emulator

I've been running a PowerPC emulator to track down a different bug.
Not so hard. But it is not fast. Anything specific (and small) that we
want to test for this bug?

Bug#890548: Stack buffer overflows

2018-02-15 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
This is just about strings, right? So something like this will fix the
problem
and resolve this bug? Or am I missing something?

char buf[L_BUF_SIZE];
-   fscanf(fp, "Rootname: %s\n", buf);
+   fscanf(fp, "Rootname: %L_BUF_SIZE_MINUS_ONEs%\n", buf);

Bug#889590: tesseract-ocr-aze has circular Depends on tesseract-ocr-aze-cyrl

2018-02-06 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Hi Bill,

Thanks for the bug report. This is a little tricky, because if you only
install one of the Azerbaijan language packages, the user will see
error messages.

I guess we just don't have a mechanism in Debian for "if you install
one, you need the other as well". That's unfortunate because it is
going to cause confusion for users.

Unless you have other ideas, I guess the best I can do is make it a
one way dependency.

Jeff
