There will always be non-digital methods of payment. I use preprinted checks with GnuCash and my only issue is that I haven't figured out how to associate an address with a payee - I'm sure it's there, but I will hate it if we can no longer use checks because transacting in cash is

Hmmm, I don't do "electronic" payments or deposits.  But thenn, I've never been hacked ;)  MICR is still a thing because The Fed requires it.  Lots of MICR toner cartridges for sale online.  I have 2 MICR toner cartridges that came with a printer I bought via a local Craigslist. -greg schmitz

While things may have changed, many years ago when I worked in the bank, the info at the bottom of the check was printed with a special ink (I think they called it a magnetic ink) so that the routing and account numbers could be scanned by a computer. The rest of the check is regular printing.
