[lace] Smoke smell in books
I have used white vinegar to freshen my carpet. While I would hesitate to spray any on the book itself, I wonder if leaving the book open near a bowl of white vinegar might help? I've also mixed a little baking soda to a larger amount of white vinegar with a couple of drops of mild essential oil (not perfume) and sprayed it on my carpets to freshen it and it seemed to work. I wouldn't put the oil near a book, but perhaps some of the baking soda in the bowl of vinegar and leave it near the open book? Just mix it over a sink since the vinegar and baking soda have such an explosive effect on one another! Re: [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
Making lace in public can take place in libraries, malls, parks, or anywhere a table and chair can be set up comfortably for the lace maker. I'm not sure scheduling a specific day is as important as the fact we want to share the experience and make others aware of the art of making lace. I thought the point was to get as many people making lace in public near or around the same time as possible to spread the word worldwide. It wouldn't matter which day was chosen, it wouldn't be suitable for everyone. All it takes is one or more people getting out and doing it. It's kind of like yarn bombing. It gets attention. [lace] Out of print books and public domain
I have been following this thread with interest. As a relatively new lacer, it has been very disappointing to me to find so many very interesting sounding lace books labeled as out of print or unavailable except at the unreasonably high prices from dealers of used books. It is almost as though by being out of print their value shoots up to unattainable prices. I wish there was some way a lace or crafting book company could be formed so that these books could be reprinted at reasonable prices (and put these high prices back down to a reasonable amount). Maybe the authors could come together and pool resources? As far as a book becoming public domain after the author has been dead for x amount of time - how is it even possible to know when an author died to count the years when a book becomes public domain? This information would only be known in close circles of lacers or within the families of the author. In most cases, the books will not become public domain within my lifetime. As others have said, lace making is not a hobby for the poor, unless one happens to be rather handy at making all your own pillows and bobbins, and if a generous instructor is available to teach and supply his/her own patterns to work. I hope a solution to this will be found so this fascinating art and all the labor intensive work put into the making of the books will not be lost. [lace] Lurkers vs. Volunteers
Vila, I feel the same way! There have been many times in life when I have been shot down in the prescence of others when I attempted to contribute something in various circumstance. I tend to be a non-combative type of person so I don't challenge the other person (even when I disagree or feel they are wrong). I step back and let them carry on since it appears to me they want the spotlight, even though it makes me feel humiliated. When I know I'm not an expert at something, I enjoy learning from others and am very thankful they are willing to share. I don't consider it being a parasite. The key word is share - which to mean means to give a part of, not drain the life out of. A student tries to learn all they can about a subject; the teacher tries to impart their knowledge. Their should be a certain amount of joy in both parts of the relationship or why do it? Liz in Missouri where we are having unseasonably warm weather. Yay! I tend to lurk on lists. I share when I know for certain I know what I am talking about or feel strongly about something. The reason I don't post more on the different lists is the very real possibility of nasty replies when my reply is deemed incorrect or my post is taken wrong Lurkers on these lists are not demanding that the ones who post do more. So in that way they are not takers, they are gathering information and feeling like they are part of a community. Re: [lace] Continental Pillows and tubular pillow made from carpet tube
I haven't made one yet but I did pick up some large heavy duty cardboard tubes from a local carpet shop. They usually just throw them in the dumpster and said I could have as many as I wanted. I took one a little over 4 1/4 in diameter and another a little over 5 1/4 in diameter. They were about 12 feet long so I had to cut the length down to get them in my car. They also had small pieces of thin plywood underlay that I thought I might be able to use for a base for a lace box. (You never know!). My plan is to wrap cut the tube to a reasonable length and wrap it with wool to a thickness that will support pins. If I need extra weight I can put a zip lock bag with dried beans inside the tube before putting a cover over it. It's a plan anyway. The price is right (free). [lace] Luring to Lace - making lace in public places
Lace Where You Are is a good motto. I work part time in a city park building and have permission from my boss to bring my lace making in and work on it during slow times. Of course my first priority is to guests so I put it aside when necessary. My boss said she sees no problem with it since the thread and bobbins, etc are natural products (I work at a botanical center). I am still pretty much a beginner, but I have also had several people ask me what I'm doing. I had one gentleman say his wife used to make lace. I told him about our local group and he said he would let her know. I have found that I don't want to try working on something too difficult for my skill level because I end up doing a lot of un-lacing! The questions are fun though and I enjoy sharing lacing. [lace] arthritic hands and lace making
I have fibromyalgia and arthritis. I have been told I also have carpal tunnel syndrome, but it isn't as bothersome as the other two. I usually try to pace myself and not push too hard at anything. Weather changes can throw me for a loop because I will start hurting for no apparent reason. Very frustrating! I try to not work on lace for more than a couple of hours at a time to avoid problems. I also have poor vision (even with glasses) so I haven't tried working with very fine thread. I have a good magnifier, but it isn't as easy to see the whole picture when looking through the distortion. I have cataracts that aren't ripe enough to be removed, as well as astigmatism and near sightedness. Re: [lace-chat] Borrowers???
So that is where my mind goes when I get absent minded! Sometimes I think I forgot it somewhere else. Could be I'm the one popping in and out and misplacing my things in that other dimension. The nice thing about losing things for a long period of time is that when I finally find them, they are new to me all over again. (I don't see how the Borrowers could carry off my old Minnie Pearl banjo uke, but who knows? Maybe some of them are living in it?) Liz in warm and sunny Missouri, US sort of like your husband's version...that is very likely...I love physics nd I would say it sort of popped into another dimension then back again. here are theories out there by some very learned physics professors that it ould very well be...in fact we may be popping in and out of this Universe ff and on too. Sure would explain a few things. Cearbhael To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. [lace-chat] Bread and butter pickle juice
Not long ago, several of you mentioned adding more ingredients to oil or vinegar after the initial product was consumed. I loved that idea, and have since added red onions, peppers and cucumber to bread and butter pickle juice/vinegar and love it! I may also consider using it for 3 bean salad as well. So thanks for passing on that wonderful idea! Liz in cloudy and chilly Missouri, USA To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. Re: [lace] pillow question
This is in the US, but there are two reviewers who did use it for lace pillows. I bought a sheet, but have not tried cutting or using yet. It seems firm without being hard. They shipped it flat. I plan to make blocks with it. http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2078p=Q_Iw=2078#pr-header-2078 Also, I have a cookie pillow that I got on ebay that was beginning to get a bit squishy on top. I cut two circles of wool and put it over the top, fastening them down on the sides with pins. I then pulled the cover over all of it very tightly and it looks like it will work fine. Our group in Calgary as been looking into getting a sheet of it. It comes in different ensities and I'm not sure which density is best for a lace pillow. he only supplier in Calgary will only sell wholesale to businesses so e are looking at ordering some though someone who purchases it from hem. If any of you know which density is best I'd appreciate your omments. Was an interesting experiment. I did purchase a pillow from someone who had given up lacemaking, some years ago which was a polystyrene pillow but had a piece of carpet underlay over that, but has been used soo much now that even that has deteriarated. I did swap it over onto one in better condition and throw away the original pillow a year or so ago. So I am off to prepare bobbins for the next piece and work it on the flat circle and see how I get on with it, I haven't used it very much. Thank you to all of you who have answered me, I wont have time this evening to reply to all of you, but I am very grateful. Sue T Dorset UK Hello Sue and everyone I have kept several poly pillows going by putting on them a layer or two of fun foam (as Sue Babbs mentioned) and a layer of wool fabric over that, doesn't need to be felted but it should be wooly (as opposed to smooth, cool worsted), then a cover cloth, then the pricking etc. On Sun, Jan 22, 2012 at 4:20 AM, Sue hurwitz...@btinternet.com wrote: What do you put over to protect the pillow but allowing it be ok to put pins in and out? The first one I did put a towel over the top under the cloth cover and it hurt like crazy putting pins in, so that was no good (no idea where that idea came from). I think that maybe felt underneath might bring tufts of colour back up into the lace.
