Can you provide the homebrew commands you have run, as well as their output?

pidgin 2.5.x is old, incomplete, and has many bugs and possibly security
vulnerabilities that the latest version of pidgin does not have. I'm not going
to help you with trying to use it , and you should try harder to install the
latest version of pidgin or Adium.

Well, recently I've come to feel that the problem is that Windows is development
unfriendly when it comes to using FOSS libraries and APIs. :-) That put aside,
if you feel this is a problem, you can try setting up a VM running GNU/Linux
using https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualBox or a different hypervisor. We
used this approach in a previous workplace and it worked well.

I disagree. "Sod off" means that the pidgin devs are not interested in this
functionality and that it won't be supported or accepted. "Patches welcome"
implies that this functionality is desirable, but not a high priority to the
core developers, but who may still support making it a part of pidgin.

The Pidgin project does not have infinite resources and cannot implement all
the features that people want. One option for you would be to set up a bounty
or a kickstarter/indiegogo/etc. campaign or whatever for that.

I think what you are describing is doable using Pidgin (with a potential
fallback on writing a plugin or modifying the source code which is under an
open source licence) and that Pidgin should run fine on Windows 8.1 and Windows
10.

That put aside, pidgin being a gtk+ app may not play nice with Windows'
accessibility features and you may wish to look at more native Windows instant
messaging clients such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miranda_IM and
http://www.miranda-ng.org/en/ which may work better for you in this respect.

Well, Google Talk/Google Chat was recently rebranded as "Google Hangouts" and
I'm using Pidgin to speak using it without any major problems using Google's
XMPP interface.

Some other alternatives are:

1. XMPP - open source and standard and distributed.

2. Facebook - see https://github.com/dequis/purple-facebook . Works pretty well
in Pidgin.

You seem to be misinformed. Android may use a somewhat modified version of the
Linux kernel (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel ) but its runtime
and semantics are not compatible with the “GNU/Linux” (or so called
simply “Linux”) operating system - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux ;

told that care was taken to avoid using any code copyrighted by the Free
Software Foundation there.

That version of pidgin is working fine here on Mageia Linux v5/v6. Some things
to check:

1. Is there anything in the pidgin debug logs?

2. Did you try disabling the firewall?

3. Is pidgin built from source? How did you install it?

4. Did you already create the GTalk account using the web-interface and are
trying to connect to it using its password  from pidgin?

5. Is there any error?

6. What's the status of the account?

I'm trying to comply with this comment on this bug report in the pidgin
facebook plugin that I opened:

I was told to check whether Mixed HEbrew/Latin is displayed correctly over
XMPP/Jabber.

I need someone who:

1. Can type in Hebrew and Latin/English.

2. Uses Pidgin versioon 2.10.x

3. Can talk with me at my shlomif...@jabber.org account (and that excludes
GMail/GTalk/GChat/GoogleHangouts which only support a client-side XMPP
bridge).

You can either uninstall the official ICQ client, or you can keep it installed
on the computer and prevent it from running by default (I have no idea how to
do that though).

Assuming I understand you correctly, you want to interact with Pidgin from a
different application written using

Pidgin plug-in (using the Pidgin plug-ins' API which supports several
programming languages) or perhaps libpurple will prove useful. You can interact
with your other app using sockets or a different form of inter-process

The Pidgin logs are saved under .purple/logs and that's it as far as I know.
Pidgin does not upload the logs of the conversations (which can be of other
protocols than AIM) to their servers, because that will be an invasion of user
privacy, and because Pidgin does not have the available resources for keeping
everyone's logs. AOL/AIM might keep logs on their servers, but I'm not sure they
make them available.

Anyway, I hope you have learned your lesson about backups and restores (See
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2009/12/14.html ) and won't repeat it in
the future. We have a saying in Hebrew that He who got burned by boiling water
will be careful in mildly warm water..

This is not possible to do in a guaranteed manner, because a user is always
able to install a pidgin source or binary under their home directory and use
that and log the chats to their hearts' contents. One measure you can try,
which, like I said, would not be too hard to overcome, is to install a version
of Pidgin that was patched (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patch_%28Unix%29
) to have this functionality disabled. But why do you need this?

The latest stable Pidgin version should be buildable on Red Hat Enterprise
Linux 5, with some amount of difficulty (like installing the various development
packages). There should also be a distribution package for pidgin on the
repositories which you can use.

Also, which XMPP account are you using? Is this a
GoogleTalk/GoogleChat/GHangouts account?

A resource is an XMPP specific thing that allows one to use several clients
for the same account.

 - Connection security -  (Require encryption? Use encryption if available?
 use old-style SSL?)
 - Connect Port??
 - Connect Server – talk.google.com??

You don't need to set all of these settings with the Google Talk preset.

I've now tried to connect to my account this way on a new UNIX user, and it
worked.

recall you need to register at the Pidgin Trac (= a software development
management web application) and then fill a form. But we can try helping you

4. Wait about 10 seconds.

5. Set your status to Online.

6. Wait some time.

10. E-mail the file as an attachment to a Pidgin developer (me?).

Ok... this is really stupid.
Right after I sent that last message my friend who has the same
problem said she deleted her application specific passwords
and put in her normal fb password and pidgin works. I tried it -

This is a known issue with the Facebook XMPP/Jabber bridge and is not an
issue with Pidgin itself. For what it's worth, I'm running into it as well,
here on Mageia Linux x86-64 Cauldron too.

You should not have mentioned your password on this list because it is publicly
archived in several places, and there are other subscribers. Otherwise, it is
possible that someone cracked your account and changed the password, and
perhaps you can restore it on the AIM site using your E-mail address.

Otherwise, we are just the support group for Pidgin, which is a client that is
not affiliated with AIM or any other service, and you'll need to contact the
service provider.

1. What are the operating system, the configuration, the host computer etc.
that you use to run Pidgin?

2. Which version of Pidgin have you downloaded? How did you install it?

3. Do other programs start fine in a Hebrew locale? How did you configure the
sytem to be displayed in Hebrew?

Cannot connect to some XMPP Services from all Users on One system

Hi all,

On one of my Mageia Linux Cauldron systems (What will become Mageia Linux 4
eventually), I have a problem that Pidgin refuses to connect to either my
shlomif...@jabber.org account or to my facebook.com account. However, it is
fine with a Pidgin in the same machine inside a VM, and it's fine on a
different machine also running Mageia Linux Cauldron.

Moreover, the problem persists on the offending machine even for a brand new
UNIX user account, so it appears to be something global. My machines are
x86-64 ones. I can also connect to @gmail.com XMPP addresses and to those of
AIM, ICQ and MSN.

Here is what I get in the log. Can anyone help?
