I finally got it working. I cannot really tell how I did it. It was a combination of deactivating, uninstalling and re-installing the enigmail add-on which made it finally work. However, I think that it could be possible to reproduce the problem by copying a thunderbird home directory from Ubuntu

Same here. Also I can confirm that freezes only happen when BOINC is running. Furthermore, freezes almost only happen while watching videos. It was exactly the same with Ubuntu 8.10 i386 and it is still the same with Ubuntu 9.04 amd64. I don't know what the problem is, but no desktop application
