creators that they want to leverage.
this will continue, i think. old ways, though they seep in these new

content have many options that can lead to further success.
and not all options are dependent on any 3rd party company. so i'd say,

i hope to see the shared power of the content creators amplify and more
companies that take care in their interactions, like blip.tv has done over

Hrm. Typically, you go either hand-held or attached to the camera. Not both.

For hand-held, man-on-the-street interview work, the most durable, cheap mic
I know is the Shure SM-58 but you may need some kind of preamp between the
mic and the camera to boost the signal a bit. You'll have to test it out as
the specs for the camera do not give me enough information to tell.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Shure-SM58-Mic?sku=270101

$99

Use a Beachtek in combination with the SM58 if you need a boost in signal:

http://www.beachtek.com/prod.html http://www.beachtek.com/dxa4.html

The Beachtek (with 48v powering) will also work with a shotgun mic that can
be put on a boom pole, another, versatile option, particularly if you'll
have your camera locked down on a tripod.

Don't have time to do the research on a mic that would attach to the camera
just now. Sorry. I prefer keeping the onboard mic close to the subject to
using an external, aftermarket microphone. Perhaps someone else will chime
in here with more information in that regard.

I use the Shure SM57 SM58 all the time with my camera. It's the
interview mic I use for interviews on the Dragon*Con DVDs.

Right now it's cabled to the camera. I have a passive dual-XLR to 1/8
adapter that I use to tie it to my Sony TRV950's 1/8 mic jack. This
takes care of the impedance matching problem, so I don't need any extra
pre-amps. It also handles conversion of line-level inputs, independent
gain an additional 1/8 source (best $150 I spent to upgrade my
camera).

The Shure mics I have are from my college band ... I'm 35 now :) These
are solid mics that work well take punishment.

My current interview setup actually has a shotgun mic handheld mic at
the same time ... Rhode VideoMic on the left channel, SM58 on the right
channel (another bonus of the adapter, two mics at once). Most of the
time I only use the audio from the handheld, but having the shotgun mic
has saved my rear on on occasion when the handheld mic cable failed
(otherwise I would have lost the interview audio).

Perhaps _the_ proven journalists' mic for hand-held interviews is the
Electrovoice RE-50 http://www.fullcompass.com/product/296440.html
with its very substantial pop filter. Like the SM58, its an
unbalanced dynamic mic. To get around the PIP powering on the
camcorder, one can use a Shure A96F transformer.
http://tinyurl.com/2awllg That's the smallest PIP solution I know of.

I much prefer carrying a stereo lavaliere pair so I can record
stereo ambience, stereo effects and clip one or both on an interview
subject. The design is hands-free, allows the interviewee to be less
self-conscious and the resulting voice levels are often much more
even often easier to edit. Sound Professionals
http://tinyurl.com/2mvfkc has several high quality stereo lavs in the
$50 range. These are made for PIP, no adapters are necessary. Tell
Chris what your applications are.

For mics that need phantom powering, I'd suggest the Rolls PB224 or
the Art Phantom II. Quite a bit cheaper than the Beachtek and they
have been shown to maintain quality of the quietest mics on the
quietest pro recorders. With most camcorders, all you need is an XLR

[videoblogging] Blank tape detected in Premiere

2007-07-30 Thread J. Rhett Aultman
Guys,

When I dump a tape to Premiere, it sometimes stops in the middle of the
capture process and says capture stopped because blank tape was
detected. I've become used to this as a minor glitch that occurs once in
a blue moon. Lately, though, it's been happening a lot. It seems to crop
up once every two minutes of footage. The footage itself is there, and if
I back up to the beginning of the scene and capture again, everything's
fine. This is becoming an annoyance, though, and I'm afraid it might be a
sign of impending equipment failure, which is something I can't afford.
The camera itself is only about a year old, and it hasn't seen heavy,
regular use until about last March when Greentime began.

Does anyone have any experience with this error? Is there something I
need to do to help fix this? I tried my head cleaner on my camera, but to
no avail.

Re: [videoblogging] Blank tape detected in Premiere

Do you use SP or LP speed on your camera? I only use SP to reduce frame
drops.

It's possible you are getting frame drops from the tape during capture,
but they tend to show up differently in other programs (Vegas lists them
as actual dropped frames rather than dumping the capture).

Just for kicks, try capturing from another program (MovieMaker, iMovie,
etc.) and see if it's repeatable.

2007-07-30 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
I've had that problem before too. Are you using Scene Detect during
capture? That could be part of the problem. It tries to add a few extra
frames in between stop points during batch captures, and it usually fails.

Also it helps if you use the same brand of DV tape stock all the time, as
different brands use different lubricants which can gum up the heads in your
cam. I didn't know this until it was too late with my last Panasonic cam,
and it started getting the blank tape detected error in Premiere. If
you've already cleaned the heads, just start using the same tape brand from
now on and it might fix itself.

  Irina,

I think I can get you at least 5k a month to put your show on Sprint
mobile phones if we can provide them 10 minutes of original content each
month.

Sign a contract with me and let me have an exclusive for one year to
pimp you out in the marketplace.

   Attached is a contract.

I KNOW I can get you an iptv deal through ATT, but the money is nothing
like mobile right now. Mobile is where we could bank.

The breakdown:

1. Yer tha shit.
2. One year exclusive.
3. 70-30 You.
4. IPTV, VOD, and mobile.

You guys still do whatever you want with the show I will not get in the
way of your existing marketing efforts.
If you find a better deal without me or before I find you one, we'll
tear up the contract.
Just give me a chance to develop those ancillary markets for your
program and prove to you that I am worth doing business with. Ethically
and financially.

Email or call if you have any questions or just want to talk shop. I'm
cool like that.

  Best,
b.

Hey Eddie,

To my knowledge no content producers are making loads of cash in
mobile. I get many of these deals offered to me everyday and when I
ask how much their best content producer has made and who they are
and if I can speak with them things get a little squirrelly.

Unless they can give you a guarantee or let you talk with one of
their content producers that is making loads of cash I would pass
especially if your content is evergreen and will keep until a real
deal comes along.

Re: [videoblogging] Blank tape detected in Premiere

2007-07-30 Thread J. Rhett Aultman
I am using Scene Detect. If I turn it off, though, won't I have to go in
and split out all the scenes by hand? I haven't noticed a problem with it
mis-detecting scene boundaries, only with it thinking that it's hit blank
tape or something.

I'll try getting more religious about what tape brand I use and I'll try
re-cleaning with a little more alcohol (I used virtually none last time).

I've had that problem before too. Are you using Scene Detect during
capture? That could be part of the problem. It tries to add a few extra
frames in between stop points during batch captures, and it usually fails.

2007-07-30 Thread Steve Watkins
I googled Bret Branon of Westpark Foundries and the first page
contained quite a few links that provide more info about him, one or
two that suggest he has some history of dealing with these sorts of
companies, but nothing I saw that you could bet the house on.

I guess it comes down to exactly what exclusivity he is asking, if its
nothing that can interfere with your existing means of distribution
etc, then you have less to lose.

Id also think that you could get a clause put in the contract that
means it ends prematurely, after a month or 3 months or whatever, if
he fails to achieve x dollars worth of deals.

Thats the sort of thing Id think about if it were me and I didnt have
any other offers coming in for that side of the business, or any plans
to persue mobile or iptv etc deals directly myself.

Hmm I guess there are actually probably quite a few businesses out
there that aquire content for distribution via mobile etc, but that
have not really come into contact with the videoblogging/vodcasting
creators before, or at least we havent heard about them on this list.
It would be very easy to assume they are a bit iffy, because they have
no trackrecord or previous visibility, and who knows. Just the way
mobile operators do business in general doesnt inspire confidence, is
this a whole new ballgame to us with rules of engagement that dont
even pretend to be all web 2.0 warm and cuddly?

Ugh but having visited their website, they get a big minus for the
looks of the site, a big minus for being extremely vague.

I suppose Id sit there and look at all the different companies that
show up in their 'Our Distribution' bit of the site, and then look at
how hard it would be to deal with those companies directly. Because
its far from clear what Westpark can really provide for their cut,
from whats known so far.

[videoblogging] Publicity or lack of, old and new

2007-07-30 Thread Steve Watkins
Lots of different discussions recently have got me thinking about
publicity.

It strikes me that its become one of the weaker links, it hasnt
evolved like the ease of use, technology distribution stuff has.

I dunno, perhaps I would expect the various network/distribution/guide
companies to do more to try to promote themselves beyond the
web2.0/silly con valley/early adopter crowd, perhaps they do try but
its not easy.

I jusst think that if I actually had a show, I would be looking for a
partner that could deliver some real value by actually being able to
do a decent job of promoting the show. Now this does tie in to
distribution, ie if you get on various settop or mobile networks
featured in their on screen guide, some more people will find you. But
even on that front Ive not often seen the vlog-related new networks
make that many tie-ups with these networks. Heck its really unclear
what the reality is out there because there are plenty of positive
stories with huge $ numbers attached to these things, but hard to see
where its actually happening in reality.

Oh I dunno, it just strikes me that companies that expect to make
money through advertising, need to find ways to advertise themselves
better to the masses. Im conflicted on these points, as I hate many
forms of advertising, and the net is supposed to have all sorts of new
ways that people will find your content if they are interested, and
various new forms of pblicity, concepts such as something going viral
(as opposed to fake viral marketing).

Ive long believed that the 'death of the music industry' predictors
were ignoring the fact that just because the rules of distribution can
change against established giants advantage, this does not
automatically kill their ability to advertise their stuff, and get the
mass customers needed to make the thing profitable.

Im also aware that some could say these things are a quality issue, if
there were more shows out there that were 'must watch' to the majority
of people, news of them would spread like wildfire, the people would
find them for themselves. It may be true, I dunno, its a brave new
world and Im not sure if we are there yet. In any case it seems that
so far there are a few different types of companies out there that
have emerged and could be interesting partners for vloggers. Whether
they succeed or fail could depend just as much on keeping the right
things from the old ways of doing business, as which elements of web 2
they adopt. Maybe some companies have assumed the web will do their
publicity for them, and been mistaken, or at least not realised quite
what a narrow section of humans their marketing efforts have reached.

But does this mean Im calling for some of the qualities of an old
style TV network to be brought to vlog show business, when I previous
reacted with horror and venom to such concepts? I dont know, I suppose
at least in so much as I always found Channel Frederator rather
watchable and yet it feels like a TV channel in some ways.

Cheers

[videoblogging] Bitchin' Moanin'

2007-07-30 Thread Bill Cammack
ok... So now I've been infected by you videoblogging-types! :O hahahaha

Besides when I first started out editing MSM video, I've never given a
damn about being credited for something I did. Most of what I do is
segment editing. I make short pieces that go into larger shows.
Sometimes, I'm the show editor. Sometimes, I'm the offline editor
(which doesn't make sense as a term anymore, because nobody's loading
in Low-Res anymore. It's all broadcast quality...) and someone else
does the finishing.

So I sat with a producer and cut this video about kids that went to
Uganda. We cut 20 hours of footage down to 5 minutes, our allotted
time in the hour-long show. It aired this morning @ 7am, so I just
checked it out on the DVR a couple of minutes ago. NOW... Thanks to
youse guys (did he say... youtes?), I'm all NOTICING that I wasn't
credited anywhere... ANYWHERE! :D waah

If you watch Dateline, when the segments start, they throw up the
producer's name and the editor's name before they get into the story.
This is because there are different producers and different editors
on every single segment, so it doesn't make sense to THROW ALL THEIR
NAMES IN AT THE END!!! :/ They mentioned the producer I worked
with. Except they didn't mention WHAT SEGMENT SHE PRODUCED!!! :/
Idiots. They floated a stack of names up the screen under the heading
Field Producers, not giving any one of them credit for the
individual segment they were responsible for. Maybe their plan was
for people to remember which segment went when and match up the names
to the NOPE! The field producers are credited in ALPHABETICAL
ORDER!!! :/

Then, the largest insult is that they have three people listed under
Editors, none of whom is *ME*! :D Being that they don't have the
same number of editors listed as they have Field Producers, I doubt
that those are individual segment editors. They're most likely the
staff editors for the program, and they were responsible for putting
the entire show together. They may have done some segments too,
depending on how that show works, but WHO THE HELL KNOWS? Because they
didn't say which editor did WHAT! :/

What's so funny about this is that none of it matters! :D I got paid,
REGARDLESS, and before all this Creative Commons this and This
aggregator jacked my feed that, I couldn't possibly have cared any
less if someone put my name on one of the myriad videos I've put on
the air. The people that I told about it saw it or recorded it or
whatever, and I'm not psychic... to be able to tell people that a
segment about kids going to Uganda is coming on in the first half hour
of a show airing on July 30th @ 7am THAT.I.DIDN'T.DO.MYSELF! :D So,
for all intents and purposes, I shouldn't care at all that I wasn't
mentioned... AT ALL!

However... It's a ripoff. It's not right! :D Actually, the way they
stacked everyone up at the end without giving individual credit for
the segments, it wouldn't have mattered if they had put my name in the
credit roll. I would just have had something DIFFERENT to bitch about! :D

Make sure you feel GLAD and PRIVILEGED when someone acknowledges what
you do and credits you and/or links back to you! :D

[videoblogging] More Info About Getting Video off of JVC hard disk drive camcorders

2007-07-30 Thread Gena
I found this video on Teacher Tube about moving JVC Enviro HDD .mod
files to iMovie.

http://www.teachertube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=cc0be55b2c82f6975038

Seriously, you want Mpeg Streamclip for these camcorders. This is
available in Mac and PC versions.

The main thing is to remember to de-interlace the .mod files when you
export the format. This will remove the jaggies and artifacts that
will appear if you do not de-interlace. I can see why many people are
upset with the camcorder and return it.

It is not bad camcorder. The export process is too complicated for
point and shoot users. It is a royal pain if you have some video
experience. I'm going through the documentation and there isn't
anything I can find that helps folks work with the files.

Shameful.

On the PC side, there is a recommendation of changing the .mod to
.mpg; I tried that and I could see the video but not hear the audio
track.

Also, for PC Users you have to get the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback
Component. If you use QuickTime Alternative you score, it will work.

If you are on Quicktime Pro you will have to pony up money for the
component http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2 It is $19.99 -
otherwise M5 Streamclip can't open the file.

Learning way more about this camcorder than I intended,

Gena

Many cell phones let you e-mail videos (and photos) on your cell phone.

You may be able to do the same.

Re: [videoblogging] moblogging

Hi Irene,

Yes, I do this with every post.

But it depends on your phone's capabilities. At the most basic
level, you'd have to take the memory card out of your phone and
transfer the file to your computer.

Most new phones allow you to transfer files to a computer by
Bluetooth. Then you post it as you would a normal video file.

For true movlogging, the basic necessity is email. If your phone
contract allows email, you can email the file over your provider's
data network.
You could just email it to yourself. But the most effective way of
handling the email is to send it to Blip.tv. If you set up an
account with them, they allow you to set up a dedicated mobile email
address to send your files to. When they receive it, they will
automatically transcode it into Flash for easy viewing online. But
more excitingly, you can tell them to automatically crosspost the
video embed code, plus title and description from your email direct
to your blog - Wordpress, Blogger, Myspace, pretty much anything.
That's what I do.

But I have a phone that allows me to shoot and cut on the phone, then
email the file over a regular wireless network for free (at home or
in a cafe, for instance) to Blip, who then take care of all the
posting as above. That makes it super easy.

Pretty much all social networks - Youtube, Facebook, Myspace, Bebo,
etc - also all allow you to email videos directly to them from your
phone.

If you need more info, or if I can help you more, let me know.

Be sure to investigate tree3 on livevideo. She is a friend and student of
mine who in her elderly years has gone completely wild with videoblogging on
livevideo. She also makes some remarkable personal videos about India and
Southeast Asia but she keeps seperate identities online so those aren't
part of the tree3 ouevre.

http://www.livevideo.com/tree3

(just don't try to add her as a friend or whatever it is on livevideo. she
has videos about why she refuses to do the whole friends-listy thing)

I haven't used livevideo because the image quality is so crappy but it may
be the right thing for a more personal project coming up.
