[videoblogging] Re: PC Vlogger gets a Mac

2007-06-28 Thread Jarod
Only reason I still run a PC for 'fun' stuff is because I can build it
to suit my needs (or my pocketbook).

Mac's are awesome in my opinion - but just too price heavy.

[videoblogging] July - My Month of Youtube

2007-06-28 Thread Rupert
So. I'm going to have a little experiment in July. I'm going to
copy all new Twittervlog posts onto Youtube.

I've never really made the effort to post on YouTube, and have
complained here before about how I'm turned off by how nasty everyone
is there, about the rating system, the visible number of views and
how ugly and uncustomisable it is. It's always seemed to me to have
very little friendmaking and social networking going on there. Just
a lot of people shouting LOOK AT *ME*!

I'm not very interested in making money, being famous or getting
millions of views. I just want to have fun making films, connect
with the kind of people who will like my stuff, get to know people -
and maybe evangelise a little about videoblogging online video.

These have always been my justifications for not bothering with YouTube.

But actually, since YouTube is where pretty much everybody else in
the world watches videos online (see stats at http://tinyurl.com/
28vec7), I figure that I *should* be able to connect with a lot more
people by using it. And my interest has been piqued by YouTube's new
regional sites - including a UK site - announced last week.

Plus, frankly, it feels a little odd when i enthuse to ordinary
people about online video and then have to admit that I don't really
use YouTube. I think it probably makes me seem like a snob and a nerd.

I have one video on Youtube at the moment - of the Flash Mob at
Victoria Station - and it's had as many views (13,000 - not many by
YT standards) as all my 80+ videos on my blog at Blip combined.
And, you know, I've had not one nasty comment.

So. My aim is to really try to explore the communities there, make a
few friends, find like minded people and cool videos and have FUN.

Any other non-tubers want to join me?

Lan,

I saw the email that John sent to you. I thought it was fair - it's pretty
obvious you're only presenting one side of the story to everyone. I wish I
could be more transparent, but when it comes to legal issues I've learned
that you've gotta be quiet and take whatever public abuse is going to come
your way. But I haven't talked with John. His mom died and that complicated
things cause he's been focused on family stuff this week.

In our defense, we're paying tons of content providers all over the world
and we lost a TON of money on Vloggies. We invested in the community and now
are negotiating with you.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?

2007-06-28 Thread Rupert
Robert,
Like I said before, I like Podtech and I think it's great that you're
paying great people and spending (losing? is that what sponsorship
is, now - a loss? ;) ) lots of money on the Vloggies.

Which is why I'm amazed that Podtech hasn't communicated better here,
to play nice with the community. You say that it's pretty obvious
that Lan is only presenting one side of the story. That's not
obvious to me, or to any of the other people i've seen who've
commented on this.

You say that you have to keep quiet and take abuse when it comes to
legal issues. That's not absolutely true. You can tell the
community that you can't speak about it for legal reasons but that
it's more complicated than it appears, if that's true. You can even
say, Hey, we're nice guys really - we didn't mean to use a picture
without asking and we realise how bad that looks - but we're sorting
it out privately with Lan. But you haven't done that. You've
maintained silence, except for one email from John, directed just to
Jay, which (as I wrote at the time) felt like it was saying Lan's a
liar. We did what we do. I will not discuss it in public. Mind your
own business.

That's not keeping quiet and accepting abuse because you have to.
That's just a weird approach to damage limitation and PR.

Rupert

2007-06-28 Thread schlomo rabinowitz
Oh my, Robert, you are not guilting this list with this are you?

It's a business; if you didnt see some sort of value in paying these content
providers, you guys wouldn't pay them! Don't turn it into altruism. Same
with the Vloggies; if there wasn't some buzz for Podtech created around the
Vloggies, you guys wouldn't have done it. The fact that you folks lost a
ton of money is probably from bad planning and budgeting more than anything
else.

I like you Robert, but your point here just hit me the wrong way. It's
smarmy and misguided.

Do you blame Lan that Podtech burned through millions of dollars? Should we
blame him for the Middle East conflict as well?

You know how these things play out: Someone at Podtech screwed up with
using the photo without permission, so company should pay for it somehow.
Call it the Oops, I Screwed Up Tax. You either pay in the court of Public
Opinion, or you just quietly pay Lan his due. At the end of the day, it's
typical business! You know that.

[videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?

2007-06-28 Thread Lan Bui
Robert,

Yes I am presenting one side of the story, the side I present is what
happened. I would like to know the side you are talking about so I
will be calling you.

I think that it is very sad that his mother passed away. When a loved
one dies we are under a lot of stress and need time to grieve. I did
not want to add to Johns stress by bothering him with my request so I
asked if there was anyone else I could talk to to get this resolved. I
think he should not be bothered with this during his family crisis so
I will call you and we can find out who else we can talk to.

Also, please don't try to guilt the community (or me) into feeling
sorry that PodTech paid for The Vloggies. You said:

Yes, PodTech is putting financial and other resources behind this
event to make sure it rocks, so we'll be visible, but that isn't the
driving impetuous behind the event. In this post:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/48441
or
http://tinyurl.com/34ztvl

Then you also said:

The truth is you're the ones calling the shots, within reason. Yes,
Podtech is sponsoring the event. We're taking the business risk of
renting the hall and doing that and the marketing and getting fun
speakers so it'll be a fun event. And we're investing Irina, and quite
a few other people's time in making sure this rocks. In this post:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/48444
or
http://tinyurl.com/2m8p3e

That sounds like PodTech knew what they were getting into and had
calculated the risk and it was worth taking. I don't think anyone
should feel guilty or feel like they owe PodTech for The Vloggies.

I have been nice and understanding and patient and honest and open and
professional since the beginning; and I will continue to be like that.
Ok, I am calling you now.

Re: [videoblogging] July - My Month of Youtube

2007-06-28 Thread Brook Hinton
I've been thinking about this too.

My main hesitation has been the quality of their flash encoding, but
I'm going to put all of Trace Garden up there in the next month or so
(unless it looks like their h.264 option is coming REALLY soon and
allows for direct uploads). It doesn't replace the kind of focused
community, dialog, and presentation of vlogging, but its there and
people watch.

YouTube could be a great way to promote the kind of vlogging most of
this group practices - as long as the url is in a video, the curious
will visit the site for the full experience and the other things on
offer. So I think of it as a clip venue and a promotional outlet - but
not a replacement for the site of an actual vlog project.

Although I could be wrong about the professional aspect and it is
better/legally necessary to keep such discussions private, I suppose,
like Scoble said. Its just frustrating to be presented with one side
of a story and not to be able to find out if its being sorted amicably
or the devilish details.

The thing about losing a ton of money on the vloggies definately winds
me up. Surely the event itself wasnt supposed to create cash. Surely
the reasons for putting money into it are part of business plans, the
money spent in the name of publicity. The same reason seagate would
pay you to advertise with you, or give away freebies for a
competition. The business of podtech is to sell an audience to
advertisers, at the end of the day, and so I dont buy into any
arguments that its doing a great service for vloggers out of the
goodness of its own heart.

Cheers

I have been cross posting my videos over there from Veoh. They get
less views then on Veoh. They get far less then my videos over on

Putting the show out on YT and the others is just to get a few more
viewers that I would not otherwise get by just posting to blip alone.

It's a transparent world. Someone gets pissed off and talks about it
and the customers, the market, the conversation, will rage on...the
Cluetrain taught us that. Naked Conversations taught us something similar.

Lack of communication and transparency in public is the fastest way
for MORE noise to be made. Because the people can move faster than any
PR dept. It's blogging 101 I suppose.

 or the devilish details.

Here's a chance to try something new! The live bit is at 12:30PM EDT

[videoblogging] History?

2007-06-28 Thread Caleb J. Clark
Merry Vloggers. Caleb here, mostly a lurker. I'm building a learning
center over at blip.tv this summer and a student at NYU's ITP program
(BTW: I'll post a draft of the center here before we go live for your
feedback).

Anyway I was doing a little research on the history of video blogging
and ran into an interesting historical occurrence.

While video blogging seems to have started in 2000, and of course with
with Steve in 2004. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_blog

Eric, the content editor here at blip.tv, showed me 40 episodes of the
JENNIShow he salvaged. This is NOT the famous JenniCam
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JenniCam), but the same woman doing a
show every 14 days and posting the videos. A video blog? no RSS? It
was a Show. same theme, name, etc. Maybe it's just one of the first
web shows???

The video won't play unless you download the source:
http://blip.tv/file/get/11178564089.40492372102202.rm
The blip.tv page is here: http://astraldisaster.blip.tv/file/88/
The way back machine pegs the show at 1997:
http://web.archive.org/web/19971224180244/http://thesync.com/

I watched/listened to it. Mostly an apt. tour. didn't hear a date
mentioned, but her computer is shown, as is a cabbage patch doll. It
is a show for sure, and she asks for emails for show ideas, building
community and all and ends with i'll see you in two weeks.

Hey Rupert,

I dig your sentiment about YouTube, but if you're looking for a quality
community of video
makers (other than Blip.tv, of course), you might want to check out Vimeo...
I'm stunned by
the amazing community of people there. Really. Comments, views. The lot.

I think all of this discussion raises a bigger question, though:

How to you get views on a video when you upload it to multiple sites, but can
only embed
one version on your blog to get the proverbial ball rolling?

In order to get YouTube views, you really need to work hard to connect to
people there.
But then you end up having to promote the version of your video you uploaded
there,
instead of the better looking and better functioning Blip.tv or Vimeo version.
It's a catch-
22, n'est-ce pas?

2007-06-28 Thread David Howell
I agree with you with regards to the quality. I really do care how my
work looks and want it represented properly. Bad flash encoding doesnt
help matters.

Another thing is how they display my videos. I always shoot in 16:9
format. I dont want there to be black bars on my videos so they can
conform to the 4:3 window that YouTube seems restricted to. As well,
my videos on my site are 640x360. I dont want to have to encode one
size for my personal site and another for YouTube.

Anyone know a way around these things?

Also. Is there a way that I can mass upload videos to YouTube and
bypass their web-based upload model? It's rather time consuming.

My main hesitation has been the quality of their flash encoding, but
I'm going to put all of Trace Garden up there in the next month or so

allows for direct uploads).

[videoblogging] Number of videobloggers?

2007-06-28 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
Does anyone have an educated guess as to the number of current videobloggers
in the world?

Youtube was around 500,000 users last spring. But I have no idea how many
of those are actual posting videos.

Google and Technorati have little to say on this topic.

[videoblogging] Re: July - My Month of Youtube

2007-06-28 Thread Mark Day
Just a few random thoughts

13,000 views of a video on YouTube is nothing to be sniffed at.
Many of my favorite YouTubers get a lot less per video and it doesn't seem
to put them off.
Embrace the possibility that hardly anyone will watch your stuff and you'll
probably have more fun.

Yes, there is a lot of rude behavior, but it's like saying, I'd never
want to live in New York, because I've heard the people are rude.
There are plenty of little neighborhoods where people get along just
fine Think of it as a rite of passage!

Take advantage of the ability to leave response videos. Personally, I found
it easier to set up a second account for that (so that my main channel has
some degree of consistency) but if you don't already have a ton of
content up there, or don't really mind mixing and matching, that's probably
the single best way to engage in a dialogue (more so than just posting stuff
to YouTube in addition to your usual haunts)

Here's my tip - hit the videos tab (top left of the page) and on the left
hand navigation of the video page there's a tab for most responded.

Click that and you can see what people are responding to. Now, some of the
most responded might be videos that have just decided to accept all
response videos (and people do often post unrelated videos against high
traffic videos in the hope of grabbing some views). But if you scroll down
a little, or check the second and third page of most responded you can see
what people are really talking about.

You want to know what I like on YT? People doing slightly absurd comedy in
character... it may not be citizen journalism, but it's every bit the
potential for people creating their own media and having fun with it

If you might enjoy a man in a pretend beard doing one-man Monty Pythonesque
nonsense, check out Doc Rusty Wigwam.

http://www.youtube.com/user/DocRusty

I'm also a big fan of WebPundit

http://www.youtube.com/user/WebPundit

and sort of enjoy ranting, angry english kid in Canada, Warren25Smash

http://www.youtube.com/user/warren25smash

Doc Rusty WebPundit get, probably, a few hundred views per video.
Warren (I must admit, a bit of an aquired taste...) is clearly not making
the movie to MTV any time soon.
Pixelodeon did put the spotlight on some of YouTube's more, ahem, marketable
personalities.
But it's often the people doing their own weird thing for a few hundred
viewers that make my YouTube experience fun.

I'm sure you'll find something/someone to like,

Nice, thx. I agree. It really all is Television in the end. We've
added RSS, the 3-5 minute format, and online community. We've broken
down the barriers to broadcast too. But when the public sees video on
a screen that is not coming off media in their house (DVD, VHS, etc.)
they just say TV and will continue to I think. I can't count the
times I've resorted to telling no-techie friends, It's a TV show on

[videoblogging] Fwd: the josh kornbluth show

2007-06-28 Thread Steve Rhodes
While Josh isn't a vlogger, he has the style of one. And you can
watch the show online or subscribe.

-- Forwarded message --
From: Josh Kornbluth jkornbluth at earthlink.net
Date: Jun 27, 2007 12:07 PM
Subject: * Broadcast News *
To: My Emailing List (6-27-07)

 Hi, Friends:

Usually I send you these occasional emails to let you know about my
live performances (often only moments before the shows begin). But
this time I wanted to drop you a quick line about my little TV
program, The Josh Kornbluth Show. We recently completed our second
season on KQED, San Francisco's public television station, and right
now the executives there are deciding whether to continue doing the
show.

It's been really wonderful -- a joy -- to do this program. I've met
some great people -- both my guests and the folks at KQED. I've begun
to learn about interviewing, and about broadcasting. But most
powerfully, doing the show has deepened my relationship to my
community in the Bay Area (and beyond, for those who catch the show
online). It's been beautiful to hear from people on the street that
they watch and enjoy the program. It's on free TV, so it's pretty
much available to everyone, which is great. And also, from the
beginning, longtime KQED viewers have spoken passionately to me about
how glad they are that the station is doing local programming again
(it hadn't for a long time).

People love KQED, and they love public television. I feel the same
way. When the station approached me about possibly doing this show, a
couple of years ago, I was beginning to think about doing a stage
monologue about democracy -- in large part because I felt that
everything truly public in America was under attack. (Bill Moyers --
whose current PBS show, Bill Moyers Journal, is to me the gold
standard of politically conscious programming -- has often spoken
eloquently on this subject.) We need to talk, publicly, about the
things that matter to all of us. The sudden and magical chance to
host my own talk show gave me the amazing opportunity to participate
in this public discussion. It's been a continual thrill to do so.

In fact, if station management does decide to continue with The Josh
Kornbluth Show, I would like the program to focus much more on
important political and cultural issues. I'd like to dig more deeply
into what local writers, artists, scientists, and other citizens are
up to these days.

So what I wanted to ask you was, if you dig the program, you might
consider getting in touch with KQED and letting them know how you
feel. If you're one of those people who's great at organizing stuff,
feel free to ask other folks to do the same. It was a wonderfully
risky and imaginative gamble on the station's part to launch a local
interview show hosted by a bald monologuist with no background in
either interviewing or broadcasting -- and now, perhaps, they need to
hear from the community that such a program is a cool thing to keep
around. Tell them -- and me! -- your ideas for the show. Let them
know that you applaud the increase in local programming. If you have
a blog, you might mention that KQED is making this decision right now.

Also, it would be wonderful if you could check in with my own KQED
blog -- http://www.kqed.org/josh/ -- and leave a comment.

Go the the blog's Watch page --
http://blogs.kqed.org/joshkornbluth/watch/ -- and you can see any of
the episodes, either in streaming video or (for the second season) in
high-definition downloads or podcasts.

Here are some possible email addresses you could write to:

Office of the President: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Viewer Services: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The Josh Kornbluth Show: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, feel free to write or call anyone else there who you think
might be interested.

 KQED's mailing address is:

 2601 Mariposa St.
 San Francisco, CA 94110

The main telephone number is: (415) 864-2000. (If front-desk angel
Naty Panameno answers the phone, tell her hi from me. Ever since I
started at KQED, she's always admonished me to stay positive.) You
can also leave a recorded comment by calling (415) 553-2100.

 ---

Well, that's what's up with my TV show! Now back to your regular
programming. ...

 Take care,
 Josh

Do you know what this is:
Its the world's smallest violin playing just for PodTech.

Loosing money on the Vloggies doesn't make PodTech into videoblog

kiss you on the cheek and give you some milk and cookies? Oh, please.

Regardless the amount of money you are throwing at other vloggers are
totally irrelevant. You are still not paying Lan. He's trying to run a

insane as this)

Unless PodTech is inferring Lan did not take the photograph in question
(are you?) I fail to see what legal issues there could be. Be a man,
PodTech. Just admit you fucked up and pay the man. If you had done this
right away noone would have thought any less of you. It doesn't even make
sense from a financial standpoint. You have already spent more money in
man-hours trying to weasel yourself out of this situation (and it ain't

Ah, yes - dupes. In the report, we eliminate as many dupes as
possible and then factor the number down. Our goal is to be +/- 3%
in accuracy. This is the most technically challenging part of these
numbers, as many vlogs change feed services / update feeds / change
hosts / change titles / etc... we have a solution that we will be
continually refining.

Ditto, thanks for the tips.
We started submitting to YouTube on a regular basis about 3 months
ago. One Sunday morning I woke up to an unusual number of YT
comments...we had been featured. I wrote to the lady who was the
subject of the story to check it out, but to take what some of the
comments said with a grain of salt. Some folks can get a bit whacky. I
find, tho, the community steps in and stands up if they feel someone
speaks a bit unfairly.
It's hard to beat the number of people who use YouTube. Some will find
your work. And I find fascinating, very creative, videos all the time.
Slowly I am subscribing, adding friends, and comments. If you feel so
inclined, add http://www.youtube.com/cookingupastory , and I'll do the
same. Did someone mention putting a list together?
And, I agree, put your url on all your videos, and a link to your site
for those who might like to see more. The quality is not the greatest,
yes, but it does have an varied audience.

I am trying to do then I'll offer my input, but otherwise I watch as

Re: [videoblogging] Check out new video blog -not getting much traffic

2007-06-28 Thread Andrew Darlow
Hi Daryl:

I just watched your video and looked at your work. First, I really
like your paintings-especially the color work. I didn't know why you
were painted grey until I looked at your work after watching the video.

The self-interview, in my opinion, is very entertaining, but also a
little off-putting. Some people might think you are being a bit too
silly for a painter, but others might like the fact that you are
letting your guard down and not being a stuffy artist. I'm a
photographer and have seen many different sites with galleries. I
like how you present your work, though I would choose a background
color other than white. I think your keepsake portraits are a great
idea, and the video definitely gives people a more personal look at
you–which might entice them to open their drawers for you as well
(inside joke for those who have seen the video).

You might consider turning the camera toward a family member who is
watching you and laughing (to just make light of the whole thing), or
you can do outtakes showing you getting made up. I would also
recommend showing the work that you describe (such as the portraits,
giclee prints, on the road series) on the screen in a small window,
or even filling the whole window for a few seconds when you mention
them. I would even include one of your poems (possibly scrolling up
the screen), especially if you plan to incorporate those into your work.

I personally don't like the video in a box with the darkened area. It
feels like my computer is being taken over. I would also use a flash
player and have a way for people to comment and share the video
through an embed URL link. It's all about gettin' viral. There are a
number of free or inexpensive flash players, or you could use a
network or video sharing site, but make sure you read the fine print.
I think you have it just available in Quicktime, which will limit the
number of non-Mac users who can view it without downloading a plug-in.

I would also try to keep it under 3 minutes. I'm sure others here
will have other suggestions on time.

I'd also invite people to take a look at your site on other groups
like this one. I moderate one for digital artists (mostly people who
make inkjet prints and other prints for sale and/or exhibition). Just
search for Digital-fineart on groups.yahoo.com.

Hope that helps. Best of luck, and congratulations on your paint
palette invention. That is impressive!

Interesting!

What is the date on those? 2000?

When I lived in a webcam house in 2001, all housemates were required to do a
weekly show live and archived. These ranged from cooking shows, to puppet
shows, to a call-in talk show. (mine was called the 'Feel The Love' Show:

The way back machine pegs the show at 1997:

I watched/listened to it. Mostly an apt. tour. didn't hear a date

is a show for sure, and she asks for emails for show ideas, building

2007-06-28 Thread Roxanne Darling
I really like and respect you too Robert - you and Irina in my
experience with PodTech can be counted on to respond, to engage, to
get things done.

What I find confusing is how long this has gone on, for such a small
amount of money, on such a very simple issue. And why the CEO is the
one tasked to be dealing with it?

There were several squirelly issues around the Vloggies, that
PodTech probably does not want revisited here as Vloggies 07 is well
under way. It would have been a massive accomplishment to pull off an
event of that size, in such incredibly short time, and actually break
even much less make money on it.

To infer all sorts of legal complications only confuses things, and
keeps PodTech in the one down position publicly speaking. I think your
point about the Vloggies being cash-negative might be relevant
internally but came across just plain silly to me here on this list.

I sure hope you all can work things out soon.

[videoblogging] planting a pink seed...

2007-06-28 Thread Halcyon
I'm planning on doing a HugNation west coast motorhome tour in
October. And I would LOVE to get videobloggers to come out if we stop
in your town for a big group hug. Obviously I'll be documenting from
the inside, but Zadi brought up how cool it would be to get the
perspectives of other people as we roll into town.

As of now, the anchor cities are San Diego, LA, Sacramento, SF,
Portland, And Seattle. But we will be adding cities in-between as we
find people to help host.

Again, this isn't until October. But I'm excited (got my motorhome
painted pink yesterday) and just wanted to plant a seed. tee-hee!

For us, the average number of views per video is higher on blip.tv
but there are the handful that get picked up on the larger community
sites for whatever reason. We have more total views on YouTube and
MySpace than our web page/blip.tv due to the few that do well.

You'll definitely get some out there comments. It's fun
interacting with the YT community and it has a different feel to it,
though we haven't been able to put much time into it yet.

Keep posting your YT links so I can find you and subscribe.

I hope to impliment many of them. Does the bloging and rss feed look correct? I
want to
make sure I am not missing anything technical.

What kind of flash player would you use? What would yu use on a non streaming
server?

Thanks,

All I have up is one Trace Garden video, but I'm going into upload overdrive
shortly. I'm also launching a personal vlog next week and will put those on
YouTube as well - but maybe a different account. Trying to decide whether to
separate my conceptual projects from the personal on YT or if its worth the
bother.

I jsut discovered I'm also on YT via an old friend who uploaded stroby
grainy old clips of me doing a live noise set a log time ago in the
record store he used to run. A *very* strange feeling to run across that. I
barely recognize myself.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Check out new video blog -not getting much traffic

2007-06-28 Thread Andrew Darlow
Hi Daryl:

I subscribed to your feed with iTunes and no movie was in the feed. I
would defer to some of the other folks on this list about why that
is. My guess is that it may be the format of your movie, or you may
need to enable SmartCast in Feedburner's Optimize Control Panel and
choose only video files or any rich media file so that it
generates an enclosure when you post a new blog post. I suppose you
are doing that through your blogspot blog.

There are low cost video flash players at http://
www.wimpyplayer.com and there are some freeware/open source options
as well. You can check the archives of this list for some links.

There are many options out there for video sharing. One option for
hosting is YouTube if you don't want to worry about bandwidth. There
is also blip.tv. I would also ask some of the folks here about other
options–I'm learning as well.

All the best,

Andrew
