I still post my original files to blip.tv because they have the capability to handle my large files, but other sites that require 100 MB or less require that you compress your file. [videoblogging] July - My Month of Youtube
So. I'm going to have a little experiment in July. I'm going to copy all new Twittervlog posts onto Youtube. I've never really made the effort to post on YouTube, and have complained here before about how I'm turned off by how nasty everyone is there, about the rating system, the visible number of views and how ugly and uncustomisable it is. It's always seemed to me to have very little friendmaking and social networking going on there. Just a lot of people shouting LOOK AT *ME*! I'm not very interested in making money, being famous or getting millions of views. I just want to have fun making films, connect with the kind of people who will like my stuff, get to know people - and maybe evangelise a little about videoblogging online video. These have always been my justifications for not bothering with YouTube. But actually, since YouTube is where pretty much everybody else in the world watches videos online (see stats at http://tinyurl.com/ 28vec7), I figure that I *should* be able to connect with a lot more people by using it. And my interest has been piqued by YouTube's new regional sites - including a UK site - announced last week. Plus, frankly, it feels a little odd when i enthuse to ordinary people about online video and then have to admit that I don't really use YouTube. I think it probably makes me seem like a snob and a nerd. I have one video on Youtube at the moment - of the Flash Mob at Victoria Station - and it's had as many views (13,000 - not many by YT standards) as all my 80+ videos on my blog at Blip combined. And, you know, I've had not one nasty comment. So. My aim is to really try to explore the communities there, make a few friends, find like minded people and cool videos and have FUN. Any other non-tubers want to join me? Re: [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?
Robert, Like I said before, I like Podtech and I think it's great that you're paying great people and spending (losing? is that what sponsorship is, now - a loss? ;) ) lots of money on the Vloggies. Which is why I'm amazed that Podtech hasn't communicated better here, to play nice with the community. You say that it's pretty obvious that Lan is only presenting one side of the story. That's not obvious to me, or to any of the other people i've seen who've commented on this. You say that you have to keep quiet and take abuse when it comes to legal issues. That's not absolutely true. You can tell the community that you can't speak about it for legal reasons but that it's more complicated than it appears, if that's true. You can even say, Hey, we're nice guys really - we didn't mean to use a picture without asking and we realise how bad that looks - but we're sorting it out privately with Lan. But you haven't done that. You've maintained silence, except for one email from John, directed just to Jay, which (as I wrote at the time) felt like it was saying Lan's a liar. We did what we do. I will not discuss it in public. Mind your own business. That's not keeping quiet and accepting abuse because you have to. That's just a weird approach to damage limitation and PR. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?
Oh my, Robert, you are not guilting this list with this are you? It's a business; if you didnt see some sort of value in paying these content providers, you guys wouldn't pay them! Don't turn it into altruism. Same with the Vloggies; if there wasn't some buzz for Podtech created around the Vloggies, you guys wouldn't have done it. The fact that you folks lost a ton of money is probably from bad planning and budgeting more than anything else. I like you Robert, but your point here just hit me the wrong way. It's smarmy and misguided. Do you blame Lan that Podtech burned through millions of dollars? Should we blame him for the Middle East conflict as well? You know how these things play out: Someone at Podtech screwed up with using the photo without permission, so company should pay for it somehow. Call it the Oops, I Screwed Up Tax. You either pay in the court of Public Opinion, or you just quietly pay Lan his due. At the end of the day, it's typical business! You know that. [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?
Robert, Yes I am presenting one side of the story, the side I present is what happened. I would like to know the side you are talking about so I will be calling you. I think that it is very sad that his mother passed away. When a loved one dies we are under a lot of stress and need time to grieve. I did not want to add to Johns stress by bothering him with my request so I asked if there was anyone else I could talk to to get this resolved. I think he should not be bothered with this during his family crisis so I will call you and we can find out who else we can talk to. Also, please don't try to guilt the community (or me) into feeling sorry that PodTech paid for The Vloggies. You said: Yes, PodTech is putting financial and other resources behind this event to make sure it rocks, so we'll be visible, but that isn't the driving impetuous behind the event. In this post: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/48441 or http://tinyurl.com/34ztvl Then you also said: The truth is you're the ones calling the shots, within reason. Yes, Podtech is sponsoring the event. We're taking the business risk of renting the hall and doing that and the marketing and getting fun speakers so it'll be a fun event. And we're investing Irina, and quite a few other people's time in making sure this rocks. In this post: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/48444 or http://tinyurl.com/2m8p3e That sounds like PodTech knew what they were getting into and had calculated the risk and it was worth taking. I don't think anyone should feel guilty or feel like they owe PodTech for The Vloggies. I have been nice and understanding and patient and honest and open and professional since the beginning; and I will continue to be like that. My main hesitation has been the quality of their flash encoding, but I'm going to put all of Trace Garden up there in the next month or so (unless it looks like their h.264 option is coming REALLY soon and allows for direct uploads). It doesn't replace the kind of focused community, dialog, and presentation of vlogging, but its there and people watch. YouTube could be a great way to promote the kind of vlogging most of this group practices - as long as the url is in a video, the curious will visit the site for the full experience and the other things on offer. So I think of it as a clip venue and a promotional outlet - but not a replacement for the site of an actual vlog project. It's a transparent world. Someone gets pissed off and talks about it and the customers, the market, the conversation, will rage on...the Cluetrain taught us that. Yay! Yeah. I'm interested in reaching out to a wider base of people... but Verdi's right. What really turns me on is finding out if I can connecting with these people the way I connect on my own Blog. It's a larger investment of time, but it's what I love, so it's worth it. I'm kind of interested in the stats thing at a basic level - the same level that I was with starting Twittervlog a couple of months ago. Every viewer that's not my mum is a bonus. But if you play - find other people whose stuff you like and really make some friends - you give and and you get on a more rewarding level than just number of views. The thing that's grown most at Twittervlog is not the video views - it's the comments. And the friends I've made. So. Glad I'm in good company as I start at big boys' school :) Rupert http://twittervlog.blogspot.com/ http://www.twitter.com/ruperthowe/ http://feeds.feedburner.com/twittervlog/ On 28 Jun 2007, at 19:37, Michael Verdi wrote: For me at least this has nothing to do with assessing where my videos get more views. I've been thinking along the same lines. I was a regular user of YouTube a long time ago, I used to use it as my quick and easy way of converting stuff to flash so everyone could view it. I sorta stoped using it for the most part until recently. I decided to start posting some of my archives there. There are things that I really dig about it. Although I do get the feeling that some of the really popular people there have figured out how to game it in some way that I haven't quite cracked yet. I think that some people use bots etc to post bulletins etc to get a lot of views. YouTube is beta testing a new layout that seems like it should encourage people to explore more of a particular users movies. I noticed that I can have one very popular movie on there and it will have little or no effect on how many views the rest of my videos get. One video in particular has gotten over 300,000 views there (because it's been featured) but I have several that have gotten less than 1000 views, and almost everything I have there has been up for over a year. Hey Rupert, I dig your sentiment about YouTube, but if you're looking for a quality community of video makers (other than Blip.tv, of course), you might want to check out Vimeo... I'm stunned by the amazing community of people there. Really. Comments, views. The lot. I think all of this discussion raises a bigger question, though: How to you get views on a video when you upload it to multiple sites, but can only embed one version on your blog to get the proverbial ball rolling? In order to get YouTube views, you really need to work hard to connect to people there. But then you end up having to promote the version of your video you uploaded there, instead of the better looking and better functioning Blip.tv or Vimeo version. It's a catch- 22, n'est-ce pas? I agree with you with regards to the quality. I really do care how my work looks and want it represented properly. Bad flash encoding doesnt help matters. Another thing is how they display my videos. I always shoot in 16:9 format. I dont want there to be black bars on my videos so they can conform to the 4:3 window that YouTube seems restricted to. As well, my videos on my site are 640x360. I dont want to have to encode one size for my personal site and another for YouTube. Anyone know a way around these things? Also. Is there a way that I can mass upload videos to YouTube and bypass their web-based upload model? It's rather time consuming. David http://www.davidhowellstudios.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Brook Hinton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've been thinking about this too. Just a few random thoughts 13,000 views of a video on YouTube is nothing to be sniffed at. Many of my favorite YouTubers get a lot less per video and it doesn't seem to put them off. Embrace the possibility that hardly anyone will watch your stuff and you'll probably have more fun. Yes, there is a lot of rude behavior, but it's like saying, I'd never want to live in New York, because I've heard the people are rude. Personally, I found it easier to set up a second account for that (so that my main channel has some degree of consistency) but if you don't already have a ton of content up there, or don't really mind mixing and matching, that's probably the single best way to engage in a dialogue (more so than just posting stuff to YouTube in addition to your usual haunts) Here's my tip - hit the videos tab (top left of the page) and on the left hand navigation of the video page there's a tab for most responded. Click that and you can see what people are responding to. Now, some of the most responded might be videos that have just decided to accept all response videos (and people do often post unrelated videos against high traffic videos in the hope of grabbing some views). [videoblogging] Fwd: the josh kornbluth show
While Josh isn't a vlogger, he has the style of one. And you can watch the show online or subscribe. -- Forwarded message -- From: Josh Kornbluth jkornbluth at earthlink.net Date: Jun 27, 2007 12:07 PM Subject: * Broadcast News * To: My Emailing List (6-27-07) Hi, Friends: Usually I send you these occasional emails to let you know about my live performances (often only moments before the shows begin). But this time I wanted to drop you a quick line about my little TV program, The Josh Kornbluth Show. We recently completed our second season on KQED, San Francisco's public television station, and right now the executives there are deciding whether to continue doing the show. It's been really wonderful -- a joy -- to do this program. I've met some great people -- both my guests and the folks at KQED. I've begun to learn about interviewing, and about broadcasting. But most powerfully, doing the show has deepened my relationship to my community in the Bay Area (and beyond, for those who catch the show online). It's been beautiful to hear from people on the street that they watch and enjoy the program. It's on free TV, so it's pretty much available to everyone, which is great. And also, from the beginning, longtime KQED viewers have spoken passionately to me about how glad they are that the station is doing local programming again (it hadn't for a long time). People love KQED, and they love public television. I feel the same way. When the station approached me about possibly doing this show, a couple of years ago, I was beginning to think about doing a stage monologue about democracy -- in large part because I felt that everything truly public in America was under attack. (Bill Moyers -- whose current PBS show, Bill Moyers Journal, is to me the gold standard of politically conscious programming -- has often spoken eloquently on this subject.) We need to talk, publicly, about the things that matter to all of us. The sudden and magical chance to host my own talk show gave me the amazing opportunity to participate in this public discussion. It's been a continual thrill to do so. In fact, if station management does decide to continue with The Josh Kornbluth Show, I would like the program to focus much more on important political and cultural issues. I'd like to dig more deeply into what local writers, artists, scientists, and other citizens are up to these days. So what I wanted to ask you was, if you dig the program, you might consider getting in touch with KQED and letting them know how you feel. Ah, yes - dupes. In the report, we eliminate as many dupes as possible and then factor the number down. Our goal is to be +/- 3% in accuracy. This is the most technically challenging part of these numbers, as many vlogs change feed services / update feeds / change hosts / change titles / etc... we have a solution that we will be continually refining. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Michael Verdi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It might be some number quite a bit different (lower?) than that. Ditto, thanks for the tips. We started submitting to YouTube on a regular basis about 3 months ago. One Sunday morning I woke up to an unusual number of YT comments...we had been featured. I wrote to the lady who was the subject of the story to check it out, but to take what some of the comments said with a grain of salt. Some folks can get a bit whacky. I find, tho, the community steps in and stands up if they feel someone speaks a bit unfairly. It's hard to beat the number of people who use YouTube. Some will find your work. And I find fascinating, very creative, videos all the time. Slowly I am subscribing, adding friends, and comments. If you feel so inclined, add http://www.youtube.com/cookingupastory , and I'll do the same. Did someone mention putting a list together? And, I agree, put your url on all your videos, and a link to your site for those who might like to see more. The quality is not the greatest, yes, but it does have an varied audience. If something is really cool or along the lines of what I am trying to do then I'll offer my input, but otherwise I watch as much as I can. Re: [videoblogging] Check out new video blog -not getting much traffic
Hi Daryl: I just watched your video and looked at your work. First, I really like your paintings-especially the color work. I didn't know why you were painted grey until I looked at your work after watching the video. The self-interview, in my opinion, is very entertaining, but also a little off-putting. Some people might think you are being a bit too silly for a painter, but others might like the fact that you are letting your guard down and not being a stuffy artist. I'm a photographer and have seen many different sites with galleries. I like how you present your work, though I would choose a background color other than white. I think your keepsake portraits are a great idea, and the video definitely gives people a more personal look at youwhich might entice them to open their drawers for you as well (inside joke for those who have seen the video). You might consider turning the camera toward a family member who is watching you and laughing (to just make light of the whole thing), or you can do outtakes showing you getting made up. I would also recommend showing the work that you describe (such as the portraits, giclee prints, on the road series) on the screen in a small window, or even filling the whole window for a few seconds when you mention them. I would even include one of your poems (possibly scrolling up the screen), especially if you plan to incorporate those into your work. I personally don't like the video in a box with the darkened area. It feels like my computer is being taken over. I would also use a flash player and have a way for people to comment and share the video through an embed URL link. It's all about gettin' viral. There are a number of free or inexpensive flash players, or you could use a network or video sharing site, but make sure you read the fine print. I think you have it just available in Quicktime, which will limit the number of non-Mac users who can view it without downloading a plug-in. I would also try to keep it under 3 minutes. I'm sure others here will have other suggestions on time. I'd also invite people to take a look at your site on other groups like this one. I moderate one for digital artists (mostly people who make inkjet prints and other prints for sale and/or exhibition). Just search for Digital-fineart on groups.yahoo.com. Hope that helps. Best of luck, and congratulations on your paint palette invention. That is impressive! I really like and respect you too Robert - you and Irina in my experience with PodTech can be counted on to respond, to engage, to get things done. What I find confusing is how long this has gone on, for such a small amount of money, on such a very simple issue. And why the CEO is the one tasked to be dealing with it? There were several squirelly issues around the Vloggies, that PodTech probably does not want revisited here as Vloggies 07 is well under way. It would have been a massive accomplishment to pull off an event of that size, in such incredibly short time, and actually break even much less make money on it. To infer all sorts of legal complications only confuses things, and keeps PodTech in the one down position publicly speaking. As of now, the anchor cities are San Diego, LA, Sacramento, SF, Portland, And Seattle. But we will be adding cities in-between as we find people to help host. Again, this isn't until October. But I'm excited (got my motorhome painted pink yesterday) and just wanted to plant a seed. tee-hee! -John Halcyon http://www.HugMobile.com
Re: [videoblogging] Re: July - My Month of Youtube
For us, the average number of views per video is higher on blip.tv but there are the handful that get picked up on the larger community sites for whatever reason. We have more total views on YouTube and MySpace than our web page/blip.tv due to the few that do well. You'll definitely get some out there comments. It's fun interacting with the YT community and it has a different feel to it, though we haven't been able to put much time into it yet. Keep posting your YT links so I can find you and subscribe. http://www.youtube.com/goodcommitment -karyrogers On Jun 28, 2007, at 7:59 PM, ryanne hodson wrote: yo i'm on youtube too. http://youtube.com/user/ryannehodson joined in Oct 2005 and never signed in until 3 weeks ago. let's be youtube friends. yeah their flash files of my nice QT files look like shite. but i thought i would try to see how different (or similar) it felt to vlogging on my own sites... -- http://tinyurl.com/yq63qk Pixelodeon-Kicked Butt! -- Author of Secrets of Videoblogging http://tinyurl.com/me4vs Me http://RyanEdit.com, http://RyanIsHungry.com Educate http://FreeVlog.org, http://Node101.org Community Capitalism http://HaveMoneyWillVlog.com iChat/AIM VideoRodeo [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -- Kary Rogers http://karyhead.com

Andrew, those are all goood comments, I appreciate them all. I hope to impliment many of them. Does the bloging and rss feed look correct? I want to make sure I am not missing anything technical. What kind of flash player would you use? What would yu use on a non streaming server? Thanks, Daryl --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Andrew Darlow [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Daryl: I just watched your video and looked at your work. I'm: http://youtube.com/slowhello Add! subscribe! friend! me or whatever it is one does on YT! I'll look for y'all too. All I have up is one Trace Garden video, but I'm going into upload overdrive shortly. I'm also launching a personal vlog next week and will put those on YouTube as well - but maybe a different account. Trying to decide whether to separate my conceptual projects from the personal on YT or if its worth the bother. I jsut discovered I'm also on YT via an old friend who uploaded stroby grainy old clips of me doing a live noise set a log time ago in the record store he used to run. A *very* strange feeling to run across that. I barely recognize myself. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Check out new video blog -not getting much traffic
Hi Daryl: I subscribed to your feed with iTunes and no movie was in the feed. I would defer to some of the other folks on this list about why that is. My guess is that it may be the format of your movie, or you may need to enable SmartCast in Feedburner's Optimize Control Panel and choose only video files or any rich media file so that it generates an enclosure when you post a new blog post. I suppose you are doing that through your blogspot blog. There are low cost video flash players at http:// www.wimpyplayer.com and there are some freeware/open source options as well. You can check the archives of this list for some links. There are many options out there for video sharing. One option for hosting is YouTube if you don't want to worry about bandwidth. There is also blip.tv. I would also ask some of the folks here about other optionsI'm learning as well.
