Sexism is prevalant in anything underground. DJing, skateboarding, you name
it. It seems that girls and women are discouraged from delving into anything
beneath the surface from a very early age. Parents/schools are very
interested in pushing girls into socially accepted areas in "enlightened"
society, but girls don't receive a lot of encouragement to explore the
fringe. Boys don't either, but boys are going to do whatever they want and
don't need that encouragement. Girls have to fight against overt and covert
discouragement when entering into any activity. I think the encouragement
they receive from parents/schools has more of a decisive influence in this
regard.
