Tosh has a point but he could mail it in another less-flammable-way. The original discussion reminded me a lot of the early days of electronic music when the old-school musicians said that making music with drum-computers and samplers wasn't real music. When they played in instrument they could feel it because they triggered their guitar or hit the hihat. In the end the only thing that counts is whether or not the music you play (or make) has a good spirit, technique is just a tool and not a religion.
