I have heard people say this same thing about trance. lol (just replace techno w/ trance as I did below)
what really gets me is when people call trance, techno. but I guess they know no better. it's also very hard to force feed anyone anything, some people just reject because you forced it on them. (i'm like this) I think the best thing to do is just play some good music around them and if they like they do. but remember some peoples musicial tastes are a lost cause. and what is music to me is noise to my grandparents (my mom likes techno lol).
