This is a sad surprise. I almost started to think that he was immortal. In a way, he will be.
I saw him in the back streets of Barcelona during Sonar in June and said 'Alright John,' being a bit cheeky, throwing him off guard as he first thought my familiar tone meant I knew him, which I don't. But he still had a friendly few words to spare me nonetheless. I know it's a cliché, but as far as I know, it was quite in character for him. Like thousands of others, I got my education in non-mainstream music from John Peel on those late, week-night programmes in the 80s. With his continued promotion of a lot of the music I love in recent years, I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling as if I did know him well enough to be a friend anyway. That was one of his strengths as a broadcaster and a promoter of modern underground music of all kinds. Rest in peace mate.
