Hi Rajesh,
I suppose about five years back (in 2004), you had an opportunity to be a
teacher in one of the affiliated colleges here at DU. I'm not exactly aware
of the fact whether you finally joined it or not but since that time, many
things have undergone a drastic change in DU. As a part of internal
assessment of the students, which comprises the continuing evaluation of the
students by awarding marks on the basis of their assignments / project work
/ their attendance / the mid term exam (Pre-university tests), which
requires a deep involvement of every teacher who is a part of any college of
DU. Moreover, most of the college administrations are washing their hands
when it comes to keeping records of every student in terms of their
attendance and final calculation which in itself is a rigorous activity.
However, in this connection I'm slightly fortunate enough to be using an
automated software installed by my college which does all your calculation
automatically but 99% of the DU colleges do not have this kind of system,
and even in this also, quite often earlier I found some discrepancy between
the automated calculation and the calculation that I did over my computer
using excel, however this mistake has now been rectified by the college
authorities after having been brought to the notice by me. Further, one
must also take into account that the duration of a college period is longer
than a school period (55Mins ( in my case. There's also been a fundamental
difference in the methodology of teaching in both types of institutions, so
one cannot say by simply highlighting the number of periods that one takes.
Therefore, without going into the realities, the work done by the
college/university teachers should not be underestimated. Let me add one
more thing in connection with my university, from next year onwards, the
service conditions are going to be more rigorous and comprehensive with the
coming into force of new service conditions by the UGC and the
implementation of the semester system for all under-graduation courses.
Finally indeed, it would ultimately depend upon the will power of a
particular individual as to how he/she would like to present him/her at the
work place. I heard few years back, and this is true to the best of my
knowledge, that a couple of teachers in the Delhi Administration Schools (I
wouldn't like to name them) who seem to have entered into an atrocious
contract whereby they were not supposed to report to the school authorities
everyday and in exchange to this they contributed a sum of amount of a money
to the administration. It is not only however about the school, even when it
comes to the college teaching, I know many teachers (not necessarily
visually handicapped) who would award relatively good marks to the students
and they practically never take classes seriously. So dear friends, finally
it is
your inner sense and faith which would decide how you would like to take
things when they come to you.

Well, I know that workload in universities and colleges is not more than
sixteen lectures per week.
So, rakesh's contention about two-three lectures per day seems justified.
I am not sure about class strength, though.
Besides, unlike schools, college teaching, they say, lasts, at least
practically, from jhanda to Jhanda, i.e. from Independence day to republic
day.

Smile.
At any rate, for VI school teaching is more demanding in form of correcting
notebooks assignments duration and making children assimilate learning, Me
thinks.

On what basis you can claim that a University/college teacher has to take
2-3 classes and the strength is not more that 30 students? Please correct
your facts and don't unnecessarily over-fascinate the college teaching, it
is equally challenging in terms of managing and organising classes and other
activities.

There are some great difference between colleges and Govt schools specially
in Delhi and also some in between govt schools and my school. I am not
viewing so same for defending my personal point, it is based on my personal
working experience of about 20 years in different 12 or 13 Govt schools, in
where, I have taught.

Mostly, in college, a lecturer / professor takes hardly two or three periods
in a day and strength of students is not more than 30 per class.
If road connectivity between two or three buildings are good and under reach
of VH employees nothing is possible.

But, in my present school, Principal office is in first building in where,
every must has to present personally at the time of arrival and departure.
Due to having vacant first period of each VH employee, all VH employees must
had to go common staff room in first period. My 2nd, 3rd and 4th periods
were in 2nd building, 5th and 6th periods were in third building, 7th period
was in again 2nd building and in 8th period, I had to go in common staff
room and then, at the end, I had to report principal office in 1st building
at the departure time. This was the regular routine in whole last cession of
2008-2009 which was obviously very tidy for me.
Regards,
Rakesh.
