I have already tried all these tricks except partition magic. I think, the
hard dis is damaged and I shall try to replace it. But just now I am trying
to boot windows at least once so that I can copy some files.

I was trying to create a dos startup disk using a pen drive on my desktop.
Unfortunately, the option is grayed out on the format menu.

unluckily, if the disk has been damaged physically, it cannot be
formatted
whatever method or program you use.
hence, I don't have hope that using command prompt solve the problem. nor
even deleting and re-creating the partition. but you can give it a try.
but,

be cautious while deleting partitions in the middle! for example, if you
delete your E drive, your F, G, H drives may also be deleted. it once
happened to me. so, backup everything before something unpleasant
happens.
as I found, windows disk management utility is mostly accessible.

try using command prompt.
might work for you.
if it doesnt, deleting the partition and re-creating the partition will
work.
since it is difficult to manage threw window's disk management
utility, will advice to use partition magic. ( a shareware software).
that works wel with windows xp.
pl make sure that you have all your importent data backed up in case
of any faillier.

Hello,

The E drive on my Dell laptop has been damaged. When I navigate on to
this
drive in the explorer window, the "drive not formatted" message
appears.

I
tried to format it from the xp set up window and after installing
windows.
Each time it got stuck after 55%. I tried both quic ntfs and full ntfs.
So,
about 100 gb hard disk space is left out. Is there any way to complete
the
format of the drive?
