Re: The 2.4 kernel: It's been so long since I've run a 2.4 kernel that I honestly don't remember much, but I can say that I've never had this work on a 2.4 kernel. I think other successes on 2.4 were probably related to IRQ sharing as you've already described, or were with earlier BIOS revisions.
