The Centrino desktop that I described in an earlier note has been running with automatic shutdowns and timed restarts (for recording TV) for the past two or three weeks without any problems. This is on Dapper with a locally configured and compiled 2.6.15 kernel. (It would probably be a good idea to include the shutdown command that fails in future reports on this, for the sake of completeness.)
