Many thanks for all the useful testimonies, suggestions and insights.
I think I'll start with JQuery and see if I can do some of the basic stuff that I need to do without revolutionising my development.
I'll keep everything in mind and maybe later look at something more ambitious with ExtJs since this seems to have a lot of votes.
