Yes, agreed in that it would again be encouraging to existing networks and efforts, and would fit in nicely with CNZ aims Phil was mentioning. It would also be nice to find ways to strategically develop the cohesion that we have.

Equipment does have all those known issues of coordination, storage & security, maintenance, updating, transport, and other logistics as has been discussed on the list around the lab idea earlier. To apply for funding one coordinator from one of these groups does seem an appropriately distributed approach. It would at minimum allow for these and other events/organisations to hold things off-grid in terms of institutional locales.

The part I am not clear on is that with the huge variation of skill and knowledge sets that are often with particular people, and have a specific set of gear requirements to match, I am wondering whether there would be a set of stuff that be useful across these events/ networks/groups. What would that wish list look like?

OK I better do the day job... !
Douglas? Your turn? ;)

Great discussion,

How about a network of events - every year there are ADA Agm's there's SPARK, SCAPE, SCANZ every two years, etc - it would be possible to create social networks and move workstations and gear around to each event (equipment needs budget). There would need to be a local co-ordinator who facilitated events, that takes budget, as does some form of national co-ordinator. In regions, the schools often have established communication infrastructure, these could be co-ordination points. It would be good to see something spread wide and throughout the country, predicated on a vision of reaching the widest possible community via electronic media and engaging with it. There would need to be interaction with groups outside of the art context - like the Linux groups that are every where.

I don't have the gears -- but I have a 3-bdrm farmhouse with a nice
outlook and two outside buildings, lots of lawn & 43 acres of paddocks
around it if that might be useful. If someone wanted to help organise
a bit of a summer camp there you'd be more than welcome. It's an hour
south of Auckland in the country area of Miranda (the beach is
mudflats & mangroves and international-traveller birds, but there is
also the 'largest natural hotsprings in the southern hemisphere' (last
i checked) nearby) and good fish and chips. :).
