Hi Helen,
This timeline is fantastic.
I think the need to define quite clearly what we mean by remote performance/art and the importance or not of the real-time are things that are definitely going to come out of the Electrosmog event. If we include remote broadcasts within our remit then I think we are obliged to include all broadcasts.. for arn't they always remote? I'm wondering about the Radio Hauraki Pirate station ... I'm also thinking about how remoteness connects to a notion of virtuality too. I was resistant to Oliver Grau's definition of virtuality for a while but now am coming around to it as a way to understand these kind of distributed projects... but then again that introduces yet another idea. I'm thinking these are all category tags we will have to work with/ include for the 'wiki'.

The structure for the wiki is in development right now, and a skeleton for everyone to work with will be up on the ADA website hopefully before electrosmog.

cheers
su

i have a timeline (incomplete) of cyberformance dating back to the mid-70s that i researched for my masters; go to http://www.cyberformance.org/ and click on "cyberformance timeline"

the earliest nz things that i found were burntime (a collaborative exhibition at artspace in auckland in 1991 that included live performances connected by telephone around the world) & phil dadson's involvement in charlie morrow's "radio solstice" projects in the mid-1980s, where musicians inputted via telephone & morrow mixed it & output it via radio.

richard naylor started doing live broadcasts of concerts in the early 90s but i think these were just broadcasts, not remote collaborations like the others.

i started collaborating remotely in late 1999 (from scotland) & we did "the[abc]experiment" in 2001-02, from whence sprung avatar body collision ...

Dear All,
Things are gearing up for the electrosmog festival in march.
This is the official 'preliminary' programme:
http://www.electrosmogfestival.net/program/

We have some exciting NZ projects underway that are not all included in the programme yet (more on these soon).

There will also be some specifically 'local' events. We will also look at having remote gathering points across New Zealand for some of the sessions. (more details soon).

What we would really like to hear about right now is the kinds of remote practices that you have already done. Eg. Caro's Picnic, Upstage, Phil's Earthworks Zita and Adam's re-mote.... and all the others that I'm sure are out there. I will be constructing a kind of live-database-wiki where we can make a record/timeline/history of the kinds of activities that NZers have already done in this field. As well as be a documentation of our participation in electrosmog.

First though it would be great to share some examples of how we already operate within the boundaries of remote immobility, and some example of the projects you have done previously...

Su, (on behalf of your electrosmog team: Julian, Zita and James).
