thanks zita, su, suzon & others for your reflections. i'm now in karamea, off the mobile grid but wireless broadband has penetrated even to here : )

i wasn't able to participate much due to my own disrupted life situation & travels - just haven't been able to keep on top of the emails & it was all i could do to be part of the 2 things that i was able to be part of; both of which were worthwhile in different ways. hoepfully i'll eventually have time to look at the documentation ... but for now just a couple of comments/responses, & apologies for not having the brain-space to contribute further at the moment.

Perhaps the truth is that a festival needs a centre, no matter how distributed.
yes, of course; but it is possible to create that centre & make it work across multiple time zones & locations - we've been doing this for the last 3 years with the UpStage festival. the "centre" is both the online space & the consistent presence of key people who make a real effort to engage with everyone, wherever they might be. the feedback we've had suggests that for the audience & performers there is definitely a feeling of community, of being together & sharing an experience, across the distance. we have "real life access nodes" in various physical locations, but we don't prioritise any location over the online space.
The time frame issues were seriously unresolved and unthought.
this is disappointing to hear, after all it is a key feature of the distributed/networked environment (i spend hours working out the UpStage festival schedule).
Also the korawiki is only just in its infancy now. This is potentially an important tool for the telling of our own histories as they relate to remote/ distributed/ networked art. I really want to develop this database. But, how... and in what way... will only come out of the material as it arrives, as it becomes documented by us as a community. This is perhaps a different kind of immobility, as we trace back through histories of practice that often fall off the radar (the old centre periphery thing again.)
it's on my "to do" list for next week : )
