there are a huge amount of residencies out there in the world & they vary enormously, from those where the artist pays to have the residency, to those that are very generous & provide everything from travel & accommodation to living costs & other expenses. obviously the latter group are very competitive. it's very easy to spend a lot of time applying for things that you really don't have the slightest chance of getting. you need to try to select the most appropriate ones to apply for, communicate during the application process with the organisation, have a project that fits both their agenda & yours, & still expect not to get it.

there are residencies that are invitiation only & (in my limited experience of only one) these are the best because they come about through networking, collaborations, etc., don't require the gamble of spending hours on applications, & are well-hosted. so in answer to lissa's 2nd question i would definitely say yes, it does work better this way.

with the current economic situation now being used as an excuse for massive de-funding of the arts in europe, i would expect that residencies here are just going to get more & more competitive. (unless countries decide to do something proactive like cancel out their debts to each other with an exchange of artworks, which might have better results for everyone ...)

h : )

ps - i have just been in prague at the qaudrennial, hanging out with lots of kiwis as well as seeing lots of theatre design exhibits, films, talks, performances ... i hope to blog about it on furtherfield over the weekend.

Yes - a great opportunity. I'm interested though in what people think about applying for residencies as there certainly seems to be a lot of them these days and artists it would seem must spend a lot of time doing paperwork.

Does the work of applying reward the opportunities offered? Would it be better if agencies actually approached who they want to offer a residency too? Is it a prize that most artists would actually have a show of winning or is it just too competitive to be a real opportunity?
