Having been on several residencies, the experience can vary enormously. My personal experience is of overall suckiness. You're away from your studio so it's not an optimal working environment. You're away from your family and your friends and usually in a foreign culture so if your host is anything short of amazing it can get very lonely.
Having said that, it can be great. I went on a one week unfunded 'residency' (in an artist's front room) that turned into a 3 month stay and a solid friendship. On the other hand I was for several months officially funded residency where I had my own apartment and working space and, due mainly to a horrible mixture of neglect and high expectations of output by my hosts, and my inability to speak the language, it was one of the most miserable few months of my life. >From a New Zealand perspective, an AiR is best seen as a >get-out-of-the-country-free card.
