there are lots of sites/databses that list residencies, but i don't know of any that actually rate them - since everyone's experience is really different even in the same residency & often it's about what you make of it yourself.

also, you really don't have much choice at the end of the day - most residencies have some criteria (e.g. discipline, nationality, age, project, etc) so by the time you work out which ones you're actually eligible for, & which ones you could realistically do in the timeframe & which ones you have even a small chance of getting, there aren't that many. & all of them are highly competitive. so only applying for ones that had "good" ratings would mean you'd probably have even less of a chance of getting it because heaps of other people would be applying for those ones as well. (maybe it would work in reverse - apply for the crap residency that no-one wants, then work out how to use it in a way that works for you).

hostelling is different because you're a customer buying a service. residencies are more about relationships, & also often about right time/right place.

ouchies. that would never work here in europe, the art world is simply far too

All this talk of the positive and negative experiences of residencies makes
me wonder if there ought to be an artists' database of residencies with
anecdotes and ratings of how the artists found them. I've had a few
conversations with NZ artist friends lately that echoed some of these mixed
experiences, and it seems like this kind of feedback would be useful for an
awful lot of people (myself included!).

We used Hostelworld.com heaps when backpacking around Europe a number of
years ago because of the reviews, and that makes me wonder if a similar
system could be developed for artist residencies. This doesn't feel like a
particularly innovative idea - perhaps there is something already out there?
A quick search didn't turn much up for me (save
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist_in_residence ) but perhaps someone on
the list knows more..?

Anyway, just pie in the sky thinking right now - if anyone has the energy&
resources to make it happen it could be an awesome resource, particularly
for NZers where the investment in heading overseas is that little bit
higher. I'm actually kind of surprised e-flux haven't started something like
this up already...
