The Canopener.ca initiative was started a few months ago by Sydney
Weidman with the help of Michael Francis and J.P. Pasnak.
http://www.Canopener.ca was created by Michael and J.P. and actually
predates the initiative but has since become the official site.
I see CLUE's purpose as being a clearing house of Canadian Linux
information. It should be as easy for a Linux user in Halifax to find
out what Linux users are doing in Victoria as it is to find out what
they are doing in Dartmouth. A Linux user in the U.S. or Europe is
unlikely to know that it is easier to get from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg
than it is to get from Thunder Bay to Toronto, and that Halifax is an
hour ahead of New York. Despite what the last census said the about the
Canadian population (>50% in four urban areas) it is still incredibly
spread out. Canada also has among the most affordable Internet access
in the world (both high speed and dial-up) and can potentially support
far more advanced project than elsewhere.
I always believed that many small voices saying the same thing is far
more moving than one big voice speaking alone. The more LUGs that exist
and make a difference in their communities the harder it will be for
those in power to ignore their importance.
